Yeesh, the admin can't win for losing on this one. If they announce in advance, they are ruining roleplay potential. If they don't tell you ahead of time, there is no opportunity to work with leadership and gather input. If they don't allow for input, they're steamrolling a change and stifling roleplay. #woof
It just doesn't make to jump to conclusions. On a micro level, with even a little creativity you can find ways to make this work for your character..it might even provide interesting context for your narrative.
On a macro level... C'mon, give it a shot before you make up your mind! It's clear from the announce posts and the forums that the Garden is gonna be hustling to make it plausible for your cities and houses to go through this transition. It isn't always going to be pretty, but I think it will provide more cohesion to the cities and will do good things for intercity relationships, too.
I've been there and I feel you (#RIPshallam). But it seems silly to be so up in arms already. A quick, orderly transition with plenty of warning, player input, and full transfer of institutional resources just doesn't sound too shabby from where I sit. ;)
@Liroram
"complete and utter lack of any RP build up to the change"
"failing at any RP reasoning"
No offense, but you are unfairly jumping to conclusions here. No one has said (iirc) that there would be no RP at all for these changes. These are done case by case, and I assume that @Tecton and Co. are going to organize as much RP as they can to justify these changes as they are in no way, shape, or form small.
Wait until after Cyrene has been done before jumping to any such conclusions, please.
Much more fair response. You have a point too, until it actually happens I guess I can't really judge. I'm just getting grumpy I guess at something that could prospectively have a massive impact on how I enjoy the game and having little to no knowledge about it.
There will be rp, When it happened to Shallam we even got an entire new city!
So much rp it will blow your.. City up.. into the ocean.. forever gone...
@Lyndee is a classy lady and you should all be thankful for her posts full of wisdom.
And I love too Be still, my indelible friend That love soon might end You are unbreaking And be known in its aching Though quaking Shown in this shaking Though crazy Lately of my wasteland, baby That's just wasteland, baby
Why would something being posted on Announce means we have ic knowledge about it? The vast majority of them are OOC
You'd think that, but if person A decides they're IC and starts talking about it ICly, even though person B thought it should be OOC, they still need to deal with person A. When enough people act like person A, it's functionally IC knowledge for anyone who acts like person B, and then those people make it IC for other people.
It's like a zombie virus of breaking fourth walls.
I'm excited about it. The only thing is, I don't really want to complete a bunch of required tasks for the house I am in for advancement just to turn around and have to do it all over again. I'm sure the house leaders will work all that out, though.
Mishgul wanted Jesus to fix my banner. Neither of us could get it right
I'm as willing to suspend disbelief for this as I was for the last season of Fringe... but it's really clear that lots of people aren't, so chop chop admin, better write a great season finale.
Given that my character is Cyrenian and has been for many, many REAL life years - and enjoys a fairly complex relationship with Cyrene's leadership - I trust the leadership and IRE, in general, to have the city and immersive game's core at heart.
That said, I decline to say very much about how this is being handled in character; I have my own opinions on that and thankfully my character is not in any of the Cyrenian houses (and doesn't particularly want to be - dealing with the city is enough paperwork - thank you very much).
However, were I a member of a house, I would be in character livid...
There's really no reason to be livid, even if you do know. Change is often scary, but also necessary. You may like the change, you may not, but by announcing the change ahead of time and explaining the reasons for it, the Admin is tacitly asking for our support to help them improve their game by NOT being livid and stonewalling them at every turn, which is exactly what would have happened if this was just dropped upon us without warning.
The word "Renaissance" is indicative, here. Florence didn't kickstart the real Renaissance by getting burned to the ground, it was a conscious awakening by the influential thinkers of the day that realized the old ways of doing things weren't the best, and new avenues should be explored.
Some folks are upset that the Admin "isn't roleplaying," but the way I see it, they're simply asking US to roleplay it out instead of expecting to be spoon-fed. I'm excited to do that.
-- Grounded in but one perspective, what we perceive is an exaggeration of the truth.

Tons of reason to be livid, my char has RP'd being in his house since it became a house, it's one of if not the major reason he works. Now he's being told that the doors are shutting, he doesn't have a say, and 300 years of his lifes work are no longer relevant because a new house is coming. He doesn't get a say. That' pretty much translates into him being livid.
I can't see that this is a move so much to improve the game, as it is to boost credit sales. Top players who spend plateau at omni trans, now you give them a way to spend more on the game. I don't see the IC merit of a multi class system or that of cart blanche killing off houses, I don't see how it fits in the lore or history. That being said with how everyone has pointed out MAYBE they have some great RP planned that will manage to make it part and fit with the lore. I haven't talked with a single person in my house who is the slightest bit happy about the change.
Also we have vast amounts in the bank account, amounts that we raised and earned hard over time, now we are being forced to simply turn it over? I don't know, MAYBE they have a great plan for RP, but I see this as more of a great business plan.
That being said same as everyone has said, we have to wait and see. I honestly hope I'm surprised, I really do. I may not have dumped thousands into this game but I have invested over 3000 hours of my life into Liroram. I'm never going to be okay with something arbitrarily changing that investment without having any input into it. So let's just call me pessimistic, and hoping for the best.
Honestly @Liroram, though you keep acting as if you will give it a chance and haven't made up your mind yet, it's clear that you have.
And that's a real shame, because there are hundreds of other players who have spent as much if not more time, emotional investment, money, etc. on the institutions their characters are a part of and had those institutions change or disappear for reasons outside of their control. I'm one of them. And many have seen the benefit, on the flip side. You have as much of a say as can be expected in a multiplayer game.
The wheels aren't all going to come off now any more than they did when autoclass came in, guilds became houses, Bal-met killed half the Gods, or that one time no one brought darkbrew to a party the Phaestians were throwing. Maybe it was touch and go for a bit, but we lived to tell the harrowing tale.
And re: resources, click back thru this thread...I'm pretty sure the Garden has indicated that those accounts will be made available to new houses or the city so you can still reap the benefits/collect interest/roll around in piles of gold if that's what you want to do. It's not as if it's going to wind up at the bottom of the ocean or anything.
I'm glad to hear that. My main question now is whether the discussions that happened between the admins and the city/house leaders were declared to be clearly OOC too.
As it currently is, it's perfectly clear that the IC/OOC separation regarding the Renaissance is absolutely not working. I'm merely not sure if the blame is on the org leaders bringing OOC information IC in a thoughtless manner, or on the admins not making a clear enough distinction between OOC and IC information when talking with the leaders.
There's currently a load of information flowing around IC means of communication which hovers precariously on the IC/OOC ledge, leaving me unable to get a clear idea of what my character is actually supposed to know IC and what not. As it currently is, I can't roleplay in any reasonable sense, because in order to roleplay, I first need to know what the setting is.
I'd love for my character to be livid or excited, or whatever, but as it is, I'm merely feeling helpless OOC.

Tryin to give it a chance, never said I wasn't hugely biased! I'm a bitter old man IG and OOC I guess heh, not much fond of change at the best of times. The fact that I haven't found my pitchfork and lit a torch is probably a good sign though!
I LOVE THIS CHANGE! SQUEEEEEE CAN'T WAIT DO IT FASTER!!!
Seconded.
Im sort of excited from it. We can all agree the guild-concept (and messy change to houses) is a very old feature that needed alot of fixes. These changes will definitely bring more flavor and meshing to cities.
I kind of wish I had a clearer line of sight as to what all I can and can't do in preparation for the changes. I've written a lot of things for myself, but am hesitant to do more when there are other things I could be focusing on. It's kind of like being told that you are having a renovation for a restaurant and aren't sure if it is just in looks, the menu, staff, assets, or marketing campaign. They are all related but attempting to do it all and finding out only the menu is going in is going to burn people out.
It'd just be easier if there was more information before the meetings as the current state of limbo (in particular areas) makes me feel a little lost. I know what I want to do, but on what levels are we allowed to start voting on things amongst ourselves? Especially since if Houses are merging and others are not there are going to be a lot of things that simply cannot be handled in the present state.
I understand the administrators wanting to take things on a case by case basis but the wait is still killing me. I guess pretending I don't know will make it easier to make it until it is Hashan's turn.
I'm absolutely unbearable when I'm restless.

I am excited for the houses. Not only do some certainly need a spruce up, but I have lost count of the times players have come to me stating they wished they could join a house but couldn't because of class restrictions, and also the continuous class wars that go on between houses. It's an opportunity for players to shape they future lives.

This. I currently have an alt in the Sylvan House who I wish was in the Sentinels, because the Sylvan ethos just doesn't fit with him at all, comparatively. But, Blademasters are restricted, so if you want to be a tree hugger, what can you do. It's probably my biggest problem with how Houses are set up right now, and one of the best things happening with this Renaissance in my opinion.

I remember when I wished to play Sylvan because I felt it represented my character well, but was 'forced' to take the decision of what is the most similar to them, since my house wouldnt accept them. Thus I went Druid and for a long time it was a hate-love relationship. I admit, it turned out for the better as Druid was one of the most useful classes I had, buuut I still would have preferred having taken the class I had chosen, rather than feel forced to take another.
I'm really looking forward to seeing what changes will come. I've a little bit of apprehension, but there's always lots of room for improvement and I'm curious to see what'll wind up happening!
Can we have sentinels back in Ashtan now please? -flutter-
Only if I get to multiclass Occultist.
Just to verify, factional classes will stay factional? I assume yes, but would love to be sure. I want a sentinel too, but I'm guessing I'd have to make my first serious alt (and first alt in a very, very long time period) to do so. Might just make an Outrider in in Imperian instead, having just recently rediscovered how awesome Imperian is.

This, pretty much. No offense to the Mojushai, because you guys are almost all really nice, but I'd have liked it a bunch if I weren't forced into a Monk Guild 'Enlightenment and zen' type House because I wanted to be a Blademaster.

I don't quite understand this. Isn't this exactly what we had when houses were introduced? And wasn't it, after some time, decided that too many houses being open to all classes wasn't working out, so the admins severely cut down the number of allowed classes per house and decreed that no two houses in a city should share a class?
I feel as if we're just swinging on a pendulum. I see nothing truly new about this renaissance, except that the overall number of houses will be reduced, to limit character customisation in favour of larger, livelier houses.

That's fair enough, but the issue of the game environment not catering to every single character build will remain just the same. House choices for your class will be slightly wider now, yet house choices for your type of RP will be narrowed down at the same time: e.g. the option of playing a serpent in three types of houses will be opened to me, but the option of playing a character in a monastic house will be gone instead.
