I agree with most of your post, @Iocun, but in this situation we're talking about someone who is quitting because they can't cata in raid defence anymore.
the non-coms won't get to experience the thrill of combat
Sitting at CC spamming staffcast/transfix? I don't think area-wide cata was thrilling for anyone involved and I'm personally glad the focus is getting pushed further and further away from area fights (though besides the artie bow nerf it seems like it's more and more LoS, so I dunno).
I'm an Alchemist and could not care less about Cata. I more care that people who are not into combat are being pushed into combat because RP wise- they care about their city and want to help and more often than not, the "help" is raid defense.
Edit: also, more to the point, ever since they killed off Selene, I feel like there's no reason to log in anyway, This just helps push me into leaving for a good long while.
ANNOUNCE NEWS #3977 (10/31/2013 at 21:51) From : Sarapis, the Logos To : Everyone Subject: "Outer Islands" ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We've gone ahead and declared certain islands in Achaea to be 'outer islands'. These are all islands that can't be accessed via ferry, meaning ships are generally required to get there.
The changes made that are relevant to these islands are: * Pierce the Veil will no longer work from them, or from onboard any ships that are docked in their harbor. You can undock, sail one room away, and Pierce from there, but of course, you are leaving your ship behind in an unsafe location, making this risky. The motivation behind this change is to allow us to keep the 'Outer Islands' as truly 'remote' places. There are a number of advantages to maintaining them as places that Dragons (of which there are quite a few obviously) can't simply ship return/pierce the veil to teleport between the outer islands and the mainland at will. One reason for that may become clear to you in the near future, but I'm not going to reveal it now.
* XP for creatures and quests on those islands has been increased, though not uber-dramatically or anything - most of those islands already have near-permanent heavy bonuses to xp on them because they aren't hunted very often (for those who aren't aware - the longer an area stays generally unbashed, the most creatures are worth in that area when someone does come to hunt them).

Edit: near future release: NPC sea creatures making sailing more dangerous ftw!

Well, to be entirely fair, raid defense is combat, just a slightly less...intense form? Less dependent on your individual skill and more on cohesion as a team? Raid defense for me is a good way to learn a lot of things about fighting and be able to see it in practice/work with other people, as well as being able to contribute ICly to a cause, without having to spend hours and hours of practice and sparring and testing to even dabble in fighting and use my skills. But at the end of the day, it is still fighting and of course, you do have to know and be able to do some basic things to be effective in it, otherwise you're not going to be very useful - and that is the way it should be.

Maybe the new war system could involve goals for non-combatants to get involved in. I dunno what, but maybe something akin to loading and using artillery, or maybe sitting in a special veil/hood-piercing room to track enemy positions, or other support functions!
That said, I feel like putting up reflections for everyone is still an entirely useful non-combat thing for magi to do!
I don't personally mind if the cata has to be 3 rooms away from the room of interest.. Just have to figure out how to work within that new system. I just transed crystalism and got to spin a cata for the first time. Funny that it got nerfed in the same month. :-S Sad funny. Anyhow, just like everyone seems to be griping that all the magi sit at the cata and OP defend... the offense just goes inside or into the sewers if we have a cata up, to negate it. So, all in all, it's not like the magi don't have to try to figure out how to join the melee already, if they actually want to defend progressively. And that's something at least some magi in Cyrene already work on. People are just resistant to change. But, people also adapt and adjust better than we give them/ourselves credit for.
There are plenty of easy ways for a "non-com" magi or or monk to contribute other than cata, or kai choke.Or any "non com," really. I can think of several.
Something that would be somewhat time consuming but very simple to do would be if someone made a Mudlet package that had a trigger for all the 3rd party messages for attacks in raids.
No actual code attached, no explanations, simply regexes of all the attacks with the skill name of it. From here people could individually decide to A) Gag, Highlight, C) Replace, D) Do nothing. One thing that's daunting to a lot of people is the amount of different things in the game to deal with.
I would not want to see server-side reduction of messages, because the attacks are cool, and I still smile when I see some of them (I highlight very few things and don't modify others, but at this point I can recognize skills by a few words) because they're just damn cool. This could probably be reduced to just the general raid attacks of each class, instead of every attack of each class, and still provide a huge benefit to anyone interested in getting involved in combat.
I could probably do this, but I'm pretty lazy when it comes to things like this (HOW DID I EVER GET ALL THIS RAID CODE)
Cascades of quicksilver light streak across the firmament as the celestial voice of Ourania intones, "Oh Jarrod..."
Cata nerf woohoo!! Now cyrene's magi might actually have to learn to melee instead of sitting on guards with easy-mode cata.!
I know I am late to some responses but the magi's have not been ultra effective, and believe me I have been ordering them to follow because we need people to dampen vibes and stormhammer and all that good stuff.
The thing about non-comms at least in Cyrene that I am trying to teach, is just understand 3 skills, 2 melee and 1 ranged. Anyone can do that and be effective with SVO. I get it not everyone wants to be the next <#include accfighter.h> but people still like to pitch in.
Reaaaaally excited! Can't wait to see what happens on Sunday, eeee.

I want to caution you guys against expecting anything massive! This is a small thing, but it involves ships, so I wanted to warn people, since seafarers are a small portion of the playerbase, even at the risk of sounding like we're over-promising (we are definitely not trying to do that in this case!).

Believe me when I say even the little things mean a lot to avid Seafarers. So this is awesome, I'm looking forward to it (currently working out things to try to ensure I'll be able to be around for it).
Thinking about the new changes with Kai choke. Targossas no longer needs sewers.
So you'd rather you and all of the city walk in your own refuse and wretched muck?! Damn glad I stuck with a city that cares if its citizens get hepatitis.

It's probably not anything huge we're expecting, but it makes the Seafaring portion of the playerbase look forward to it nonetheless!

We hand out free stillsuits to our citizens. Exceptional citizens are permitted to undergo an arcano-surgical procedure where their non-essential internal organs are replaced with Light-empowered machinery while their skin is implanted with miniature cells that adapt to battlefield conditions.
This particular design with weapon was specifically designed for our Serpents(I hope you've been killing a billion heathen scum in Aurora's name, @Antidas, @Daeir, @Tvistor.).
Other designs will be similar in look, barring a few insignia changes and weapon kits.
@Synbios, the most useful feature of that bow is the broadhead at the end of the arrow. Other than that, can keep your fancy laser and stabiliser bars. They will ill serve you.
My rave is for Tecton and all the other who work tirelessly behind the scenes to bring us new, exciting stuff, and still have time to stay connected with players.
