Today I'm at my favorite school with my favorite team of kids, subbing for a history teacher. During my third period (sixth graders), I have a young girl approach me to explain she had been out the last two and a half days due to being in the hospital. Apparently, two boys on either side of her were fighting over milk (lol) at lunch, and one boy went to try and hit the other. In the middle of trying to disentangle herself, the boy not only hit her instead, but she tripped and hit her head against the (very hard) table. Suffice to say, she blacked out and not only missed some school, but her memory was affected somewhat.
I felt awful for her, so I sat down and we went over her reading and the assignment, slowly working out the problems together while I keep an eye on the rest of the class. We finished it without issue, and I gave her some instructions to help her catch herself up. She was so grateful - she gave me a rather large hug and the biggest smile ever.
The same girl, once she was finished, confessed her dislike of reading, and that she never does it outside of school - not unusual at all, unfortunately. So I took out my huge, 1000ish paged book (Drums of Autumn, historical fantasy/romance) and encouraged her to read the one page prologue. She did so, and then handed it back to me, gushing how good and interesting it seems. I gave her some suggested genres, and she promised to go ask the librarian about them.
Not only that, but the rest of the kids throughout all of my classes have been giving me big grins, telling me how much they love (love!) me and how glad they are I'm there, giving me high-fives, and even the occasional hug. The behavior (overall) has been wonderful, and generally very cheerful, interested, and pleasant.
Substituting can be extremely stressful and can cause insanity, but days like today give me faith and hope in our upcoming generation.
I only wish this was every class/school!
And I love too Be still, my indelible friend That love soon might end You are unbreaking And be known in its aching Though quaking Shown in this shaking Though crazy Lately of my wasteland, baby That's just wasteland, baby
I'm moving flats! Been packing all day and completely exhausted myself by dancing in all the cleared floor-space, haha. I'm looking forward to new place, fresh start, maybe I'll take up dancing again. I'm all happy and excited now!
Add to that, I've had a lovely week, so I'm just in a wonderful mood. Hope you all have a grand weekend too!
A long-time coworker and I finally met up outside of work, after years of me and her planning to but never getting to it... and had a complete blast. Stayed up until 6am (we both usually crash at around 8pm?) watching random movies on netflix.
Some changes at work mean I have a lot more free time than I expected, so I'm back in Achaea again!
My wife is moving departments at her work, and her breaks are a lot more flexible, so we get to see a lot more of each other than before.
My boss approved me to hire two more people (internal hires, from three levels down), which is absolutely amazing, as I finally got to hire a girl who rose to top of her group (of around 500 people) in nine months. Literally just in time - she was going to leave the company in two months, when school started, because they couldn't accommodate her schedule (and I can!).
Just had two people much futher up the chain notice and compliment my boss on my work - and these two NEVER compliment ANYONE. They're always complaining about everyone else in my section (and I have some of the best non-management people in the company working under me).
~Long-term sub gig at independent K-8 school draws to an end this week (with conferences on Thursday/Friday to boot). The kids have been very sweet here and the faculty awesomely supportive with a side of kooky and I will miss them, but I'm also looking forward to visiting my old subbing haunts (who have probably given me up for dead at this point).
~home improvement project of bathroom facelift went 95% well, with the average amount of swearing and an above-average trip count to Lowe's. Cabinet has been painted and given new hardware, and the sink top and fixtures themselves have been replaced with new ones. Shiny.
~Gestation week #17 commencing; 2 more weeks until we attempt to discern gender of spawn.
~I get Sushi on Thursday. You have no idea how much I have been wanting to go out for sushi.
Driving home, I am just awestruck by such a vividly painted sky. Behind me is the most beautifully muted dusky tones of twilight. In front of me, the sky could be out of a digital illustration. The setting sun has cast the rolling cloud banks in hues of yellow and orange, with streaks of red and every shade in between.
It doesn't happen often but nature just knocks me on my butt. The sense of awe and wonder just seems so surreal, and for the briefest of moments, nothing else in my life has any significance. On afternoons like this, I feel blessed for all the good things that I do have in my life. :x

More likely to hit possums, hawks, frill-neck lizards, those other cute little lizards, stray dogs, and people.

There is nothing quite like a fall morning. I feel a sense of calm when there is fog, and rain, and colored leaves. There is something magical about the air in the fall, it invigorates me, it makes me glad to be alive.
Sometimes kids bicker over who gets to stand near me while we hike. It boosts my ego, I'm not going to lie. Today a pair of boys were bickering over who was to stand nearest to me, when one turned to the other and said "Don't make me go all Thorin Oakenshield on your face". Best thing I've heard all year.

@Jozlyn, what is your job again? Being surrounded by nature must really be fun and amazing to see!

31-17 and the 3 to send the game into overtime (that the T-Wolves eventually won, too) from Kevin Love, Pelicans looked pretty good for the first half at least against the Pacers, the Lakers' win yesterday was a really fun game (even if I still think they're going to be a terrible team), my Spurs won their home opener against the Grizz, MCW goes NUTS against the Heat (what an insane rookie debut), D-Rose is back, and the Red Sox just won what was an excellent World Series. I love sports!
And as he slept he dreamed a dream, and this was his dream.
Gay boyfriend (the guy I roll bland mandarins {blandarins} across the office floor to) at work is leaving to teach in China for a month. People were going up to him and hugging him like he was given his last rites at the end of his shift. I put this down to them realising there's no Facebook in China so communication en masse will be hard.
When he actually stood up to leave, he didn't so much as wave goodbye to me - and people were wondering why and thought we broke up (closet gay). I don't even have his number/Facebook. Pretty sure they have not worked out we're realists. He knows, and I know, it's only a month, and that we'll see each other again
Oh and how is this a rave? He stuck a whole bag of mandarins in my drawer without me knowing. 8 of them - a fortunate number in Chinese culture. And they were all bland. I'm gonna miss those in-jokes for a while.
