Within 2 minutes of me graduating the Trial of Rebirth, Vicious ordered me to report on the progress of my Grunt trials. At that point I hadn't even moved from the initial portal spot yet. When I didn't respond in 20 seconds, he threatened to behead me. I told him I had just graduated from the trial, and then he told me I should quit Mhaldor.
About 30 minutes after that, Kresslack and Daitya ordered me to some location I didn't know to go hunting in Annwyn. When I said I was only level 15 they said it didn't matter and to follow orders or I would be beheaded. Was a great welcoming experience. It makes me silently giggle when I hear people ask why Mhaldor has such a hard time keeping new players and combatants.
Tl;dr I agree with Silas
I vaguly remember that and to clarify: I don't remember Daitya being there; I certainly don't recall it being Annywyn because I don't hunt there and pretty sure it was a group hunt, in which if -I- was leading it, I take in consideration the relative consitituion of each participant; I never threaten people with beheading, especially considering I'm not of rank to make the call; yes you were told to participate in the Group Hunt because it is considered a good experience for all members of the House, especially novices.
So, in conclusion, I would say the reason some few people don't stick around Mhaldor is because they'd rather spend time arguing and wasting energy on pointless things (such as this), than actually reading HELP MHALDOR prior to joining (as instructed in the Trial) and realizing, "Hey, this seems like a no nonsense type of place."

Edit 2: Shirszae just WTF'd me. To the Red Square with her!
@Asula there are reasons why you're having trouble advancing, and it has to do with the way you've been interacting with people. If you want to talk about it and actually listen, hit Katz up about it in game. If people do something like the things you listed when you were a novice, again TALK to someone like the HoN/HL. Log the conversation, and report it if you don't think it was fair.
@Kinilan there have been major changes to the novice program, and proposed changes to the MIB scroll, which I think is barely legible, but it's a massive thing to change with everyone currently having points, and making it all fair.
Nah, Katzchen. I'm not having any problems advancing. I realized from the second we talked that you weren't going to like me.
Interactions like the one we had where someone was sniping you while I was learning from you, and I closed the door and went to attack them, and you responded by being mean and calling me stupid for not knowing where every guard in Mhaldor was located (there wasn't line of sight to where we were standing, and it was someone just testing snipe on you) are the kind of things that push people away.
And when you DID get something reported to you, you shoved it aside because of your personal relationship with him (which I did not know about until afterward, otherwise I would have gone over your head). I also reported the interaction with Daitya, Kresslack and Vicious to both Carmain and Orchist, but didn't have them logged, and nothing ever happened about it.
Here's the log in question:
You tell Deacon Aegoth, "Where did your artefacts go?"
Aegoth tells you in Mhaldorian, "I sold them."
You tell Deacon Aegoth, "That seems like an interesting move."
Aegoth tells you in Mhaldorian, "I'll give you a real fight later."
Aegoth tells you in Mhaldorian, "Those weren't my artefacts anyway."
You tell Deacon Aegoth, "Yes, I know those weren't your artefacts."
You tell Deacon Aegoth, "You are not restricted to spar honourably like I am, it is your choice to borrow artefacts for a spar with a city mate."
I stopped reading after that line. That's some serious career suicide right there.
Maybe it'd do you a little good to read this for your own self preservation, not just in Achaea but in real life.

That always made me wonder what Mhaldorians think OOCly of novices who are less-than-perfect little slaves, and get themselves in trouble/beheaded/etc. On one hand, they're no-nonsense, but on the other hand, it seems like a waste of a roleplaying opportunity to not mess up!

I messed up plenty of times! I just took it in stride and adopted the "learn and grow from your errors" mentality. It's not that fucking up is bad in Mhaldor.. it's more of how you deal with said fucking up, and the consequences related to it

I see what you did there. My personal stance on novices is this: It's really easy to tell if you're a real novice and if you're just rolling a new character. Doesn't matter either way, just the alts get through the simple stuff quicker and it saves both of us time. For true novices, I don't mind spending the extra time with them to ensure they don't die to lycopods and the Leviathan every time they step outside of the gates. The only people who get beheaded and/or tossed out of the Mhaldor are the ones who are just trolling and are blatantly disrespectful and want to argue instead of listen and follow instructions. Doesn't much matter the set of instructions, as a Slave one obeys. Sometimes it sucks, yes, but that's Life Suffering.
Do people sometimes abuse getting Troni? Yes. However, it's not that common from what I've seen these days, so that's my rave for Mhaldor. Basically, as Trey said, if you're a Slave and you're mouthy and argumentative all the time, of course you're going to catch shit for it. I hear Hashan puts up with that kind of stuff, so it's not as if there aren't alternatives available.

@Beliar (when he was a slave) calling out Orchist (I think that's who it was) and challenging him to a duel over CT was one of the funniest things I've ever witnessed in Achaea. Also some Malefic calling @Nizaris the Archweasel (instead of Archbishop) made me lol too. So on an OOC level I usually find it hilarious.
Strangely the people that I find stay in the Maldaathi are the true newbies, the people that struggle and slowly grow and have the attitude of "I am sorry, I do not know but I want to learn, please teach me". They are the ones that take things on the chin and take pride in achievements.
Sadly, being the only Infernal House we get a TON of "Oh, I want to try Infernal and Vivisect people too" alts who have achieved great things on their main and are great fighters, but sadly bring that attitude into the Maldaathi. They do not realise that we do not care their main has achieved, we expect them to be humble and act like slaves, not royalty. Instead they go around bragging about how great they are at combat, usually talking down to their true newbie peers and speaking to superiors in the fashion above which just does not gel in Mhaldor or the Maldaathi. They are usually easy to spot and 90% of them burst out in tears, cry on the forums and quit.
RL months later, still love my pet that someone amazing bought for me.
Skarlath pets a luminous ivory jaguar ingratiatingly.
Golden eyes flash dangerously and fix upon Skarlath as a luminous ivory jaguar's maw opens wide, offering a deafening, primal roar of fury.
Skarlath blinks.
It will never get old.
Thank you again, secret special someone. :x
That jaguar is awesome. Pets seem to be a fantastic avenue for interesting/funny stuff; Penwize's are constantly impressing me. Looking forward to mine, glad I got him all wrote up before the pricing changes. >-
Edit: Sorry you caught me during my no-sparring hours! My latency quadruples for a few hours most nights and I'm not nearly used to it enough to play through it besides some safe bashing.
Yeah. One side argues that Evil is superior, the other side gets kicked out of the city for even contemplating the blasphemy to debate the opposite and hunted for an Achaean year.
my rave is that Mhaldor is even trying to do debates. I've been wondering how a competitive debate format would work in Achaea, and while I don't think that the system being used there is perfect, it certainly seems like it should be engaging.
As for all this Mhaldor stuff, I found that as long as you interpret being a slave to mean that you are actually a slave who could be killed at any moment and fill all your conversations with as much groveling as reasonably possible, people generally can't get mad at you. Even if you want to disagree, there are plenty of very respectful or apologetic ways to phrase questions or problems you've been having and that has always seemed to keep Nakari's head on her shoulders.
To be fair, the Maldaathi house has been functioning like a guild for far too long, really needs to shape itself into a house.
Kinilan, Batista and myself implemented a lot of changes that immediately got reversed after I was made Tyrannus and forced to step down from High Lord. Batista pretty much left because of it (and other drama) and Kinilan got ignored for the rest of his life.
Would live to reimplement all those things but apparently I'm not allowed to.
Hopefully there will be other changes soon and I can be more involved when I get back from having a life next week.

One of the symptoms of an approaching nervous breakdown is the belief that one's work is terribly important
Here's a real rave. After searching for six bloody in-game months, I finally caught Lyaeus (the travelling bard denizen) in Mhaldor's common room yesterday. Yayyyyyy!
"Mummy, I'm hungry, but there's no one to eat! :C"
Lyaeus doesn't work like Lisia where you can send a tell as ask where they are? i always run into him in Eleusis and ask for a story, followed by slapping him.
"Faded away like the stars in the morning, Losing their light in the glorious sun, Thus would we pass from this earth and its toiling, Only remembered for what we have done."
A painting on canvas of a gaunt, contemplative maiden in a misty garden.
Insinuations of a round, mist-ridden garden besiege a decidedly young, petite woman dressed in white flowing garments. Settled in the middle of a pathway of black pebbles, she nonetheless maintains an elegant appearance, head held high and legs neatly folded beneath her thighs. Only her shoulders give way slightly, devoid of tension. Resting on the ground, her right hand holds onto an open pair of half-moon glasses while the left reaches for the few remaining braids amids her black hair. Already most of her reedy locks are loose, some strands sticking to the dampness of her cheeks and throat. Before her rises an antique shrine carved from black stone, surface aglow from myriad bowls heavy with burning incense. Petals from a hundred wilted flowers lie strewn about the shrine, but only a tiny edelweiss appears hale and strong as it rests under the thickening fumes. The maiden's verdant eyes linger listlessly on the white blossom, but her lips threaten to smile. A half quill emblem is discretely imprinted in the lower right corner, marking this to be a work from the Lord Bard's Commune.
A cheeky grin across his face, Lyaeus, the travelling bard says, "Any more requests?"
Orzaansyn shakes her head.
You say in Mhaldorian in a quiet, contemplative voice, "Perhaps not. I am going to scribe these tales and retire."
Thinking hard, Lyaeus, the travelling bard rubs the tip of one of his stubby horns.
Lyaeus, the travelling bard exclaims, "Ah, yes! I know the perfect story!"
You say in Mhaldorian in a quiet, contemplative voice, "...argh, no!"
Lyaeus, the travelling bard bows deeply before you, his movements wildly exaggerated.
Orzaansyn slaps Lyaeus, the travelling bard on the cheek. Lyaeus, the travelling bard open his mouth as if to speak, then closes it again, giving Orzaansyn a hurt look.
Muttering under his breath, Lyaeus, the travelling bard slinks off to the corner of the room and pouts.
Lyaeus, the travelling bard grumbles to himself about how people wouldn't recognise talent if it came up and hit them in the face.
"Mummy, I'm hungry, but there's no one to eat! :C"
My favorite Lyaeus moment happened when I wasn't even around.
"Lyaeus, the travelling bard glances cautiously around the room before leaning in close and whispering, "A discreet source of mine delivered a note last night saying she has first hand evidence that a viceroy of Mhaldor is embezzling funds. Unbelievable isn't it!""
