  • Tonight, I visited Aldi, possibly one of the strangest stores I've ever been to.

So, who wants Millville Toaster Tarts and Cheese Club Mac & Cheese?
I like Aldi stores.  I'll always remember when I saw the inside of one when I was in Vienna. It had an identical layout to all the Aldi's I've been in in Australia.  It was a nerdy/shopping awesome.
Janeway: Tuvok! *clapclap* Release my hounds!
    Krenim: Hounds? How cliche.
Janeway: Tuvok! *clapclap* Release my rape gorilla!
    Krenim: ...We'll show ourselves out.

Got my dog tags, thank you brother. Navy ones. He also sent me an old pair of his. It's nice.

  • Finally got around to getting green coffee again. Now have freshly roasted coffee for the first time in months. It almost makes 8 am bearable.
  • I always wanted to try roasting coffee myself, but it will boost my coffee preparation time to coffee drinking time ratio even more :(

It's not that bad, really. It takes me maybe 10 minutes to roast enough to last a couple days.

Yeah, people are like "it's about the ritual, it makes you appreciate the coffee more". Maybe I'd be capable of appreciating your 20 minute ritual after I had a cup of coffee. I don't even grind my own beans.

Espresso machine, though. It's so good. So good. It makes percolator, french press, and drip brew coffee taste bad in comparison, and instant coffee taste like some kind of stale, bitter cleaning product.

  • I can appreciate the ritual. I do enjoy doing my best to make a good espresso, even if it means that making the coffee takes quite a bit longer than drinking it. But I'm not sure how much further I'm willing to go. It may only take 10 minutes to roast a bunch of beans, but that's not including the time it would take me to even get the green beans, the time it would take me to master the roasting to a degree that it would indeed give me a better quality than buying roasted ones, and the time I might potentially lose from burning them from time to time.

For the time being, I'm perfectly happy with buying good roasted ones and just grinding them myself. What's absolutely crucial though is not just letting your half-used bag of beans stand around in the open and lose all its aroma. Closing it tightly and storing it in the fridge helps a lot to keep it nice and fresh.

I still might try roasting some time, simply to see if there's actually a quality improvement that would make it worth it to me.

So you're saying that brewing instant coffee in an espresso machine makes it taste better?
  • How is making coffee in an espresso machine "brewing instant coffee"?
  • I actually switched from storing my coffee in the fridge to in a cupboard at room temperature, and prefer the results. Certainly it's no worse than refrigerating them. Still sealed airtight of course, otherwise they quickly go stale and lose their flavour. I don't know exactly why it's better. I've read on the internet that storing coffee in the fridge will cause it to absorb aromas from other things in the fridge, but that seems irrelevant if you're properly sealing the container. I suspect it's something to do with the oils in the coffee, but I don't know.

Haha no. Is that possible? I actually wonder how that would turn out.

I just meant in comparison to espresso coffee, with that rich flavour and warm smell and layer of crema, it's harder to drink other types. I used to drink a lot of instant coffee.

I meant "taking instant coffee and sticking it in an espresso machine". No idea if that would actually work or not. The point was just that "some kind of stale, bitter cleaning product" sounds like an improvement over the usual taste of instant coffee.

I don't think I've ever heard of refrigerating coffee. I would imagine one problem would be that it might tend to sweat when you take it out of the fridge, leeching some of the flavor. It might also stale faster at fridge temps; that's true of bread, but I don't really know what the mechanism is and whether it would carry over to other things.
  • @Eraseriel @Chryenth Don't get me wrong, I'm quite fond of tea as well, but good coffee is definitely better. Bad coffee seems to be more common than bad tea, though, sadly.
  • I am the queen of my to-do list.  RIP, Spring Break.   -_-

I think a "coffee vs. tea" debate is as silly as a "beer vs. orange juice" debate. They're just two completely different things, both with the potential to be really good, both with the potential of being bad. I frequently drink tea and I frequently drink coffee (although I certainly put more effort into my coffee than my tea).

But yeah, I agree with just how much coffee can be messed up. You get that "stale, bitter cleaning product" that Blujixapug mentioned (easily happens with espresso machines that are clogged with lime scale or otherwise unable to produce the right pressure), or you get burned coffee (which tastes like burned tires), really sour coffee, etc. I rarely even drink coffee when I'm not at home, since many bars/restaurants just can't make a good one, so I tend to stay on the safe side with other drinks.

This is true. Beer is clearly superior to orange juice.

Sooooooooo bored. In an attempt to entertain myself, I have done some writing until I got bored, then listened to some steampunk music, then attempted to draw only to be extremely frustrated with it and stop cuz it looked like an elvish munchkin with a weilding bananna(it was supposed to be a sword), then watched more random videos on youtube. Hahaha...good times.

    I fucking love orange juice!
So do I! But I stand by my statement.
  • I just wanted to say thank you, with so much extra grateful that it's not even funny, to all the people that have made the last six months of my life bearable.  It's awesome to be working through from the other side of that, finally, but if it hadn't been for you I don't think I'd be where I am now.  So thank you. <3
  • HaldonHaldon I forgot...
Rain! Yay for rain! We may get more tomorrow. I have all my fingers and toes crossed for more. I kid you not, less than an hour after the rain stopped blue bonnets popped out all over my pastures. By tomorrow the smell will be so intense you could cut it with a knife.

Ahh life is balanced. A rant and a rave in one night.
Arguing with a zealot is only slightly easier than tunneling through a mountain with your forehead.
