You only need a soul for grove resurrection (as long as the prerequisites are met, obviously), but that seems to be the only clear cut mechanical benefit outside of saving time.
Has splint mail always provided better defense than field plate or is this due to the Big Change?
Field plate doesn't exist anymore, so uh, no?
Also they changed the stats you see on ALIST/ARMOURPROBE to the actual percent reduction, so the numbers got lowered significantly but the actual protection is well above average.

Field plate does still exist. It's both holdovers from shops and a skill in armoursmithing that's 68 lessons above trans! It is, however, slightly less cutting protection than scale, so it's a bit terrible for Knights.

No, it hasn't always provided better defense (generally, really good splintmail could be better than really bad fieldplate, I think). Yes, it's due to the Big Change.
Fieldplate is no longer an item you can forge, but I guess they didn't want to just remove all of the existing suits from the game and leave people (who might not notice) with no armour at all. The awful stats is a way to encourage Knights to pick up Fullplate pretty much straight away, I guess.
Stats on Fullplate are 51%/51% without armour runes, which bump it up to 55%/55%.
I'm trying to create a simple extraction alias that runs through the process of extracting all three primes in a room with a single command. Maybe I'm just misunderstanding the in-game queueing system, but I can only get the first two commands to fire, the third is attempted at the same time as the second.
You kneel and collect chunks of earth, using a strong-smelling solvent to pull a group of 2 salt
crystals from the dirt and rock. This delicate process completed, you set the prime aside to dry.
3460h, 4151m, 16188e, 12655w eb-
[System]: Added EXTRACT SULPHUR to your eqbal queue.
3460h, 4151m, 16188e, 12655w eb-
[System]: Added EXTRACT MERCURY to your eqbal queue.
3460h, 4151m, 16188e, 12655w eb-
You have recovered balance on all limbs.
[System]: Running queued eqbal command: EXTRACT SULPHUR
You kneel and collect chunks of earth, using a strong-smelling solvent to pull a group of 2 pinchesof powdered sulphur from the dirt and rock. This delicate process completed, you set the prime
aside to dry.
[System]: Running queued eqbal command: EXTRACT MERCURY
3460h, 4131m, 16188e, 12651w eb-
You have recovered balance on all limbs.
3460h, 4171m, 16198e, 12657w exb-
That's just how the queueing works. It will send both even if you only have balance/eq for one. If you have automatic queueing turned on (config usequeueing on), the failed second extract will automatically be requeued, but then you also have to deal with all your other commands being automatically queued when you use them without bal/eq.

You can cut out the third alias and just have gprime2 do extract salt/queue add eqbal extract mercury.
Oh right. Yes.
My actual one then calls cprime to combine all three stacks.
edit: although that could also be done inline. This system also falls apart if any extraction step fails. They don't do alias expansion if the queue runs in the same prompt.
A longshot, but which house has the best program for teaching novices how to fight?
Sylvans!
Just kidding, don't join us. We suck. Most cities will have a house that tends to be more combat oriented than others. It may be a good choice to look at one of those if that is how you would like your day-to-day game life oriented. If not, don't fret. You can always choose another house and make contacts with the members of that house that enjoy combat or other houses in your city. The key is to diversify your socialization.
I left Targossas to learn combat because I felt like I wasn't being taught enough there.
The Ashura have Kross, Nemutaur, Jhui, etc
The Legates have Xinna and Hasar. To a lesser degree myself and a few others can help too.
Not sure what combatants that the other Houses have outside of like Aelios/Gerwulf/Kenway, etc
While it is entirely up to you to feel if/how much you can learn, if memory serves me correct you could have asked Sothantos/Santar/Tesha among others at the time. You also kept switching classes every 2 weeks and usually did something stupid to die by yourself in group battles. I remember we used to keep track of our K:D ratio in fights and we would easily be .500 if we removed the 10x Atalkez has been slain by X from the accounting.
Most houses have the basics set up. Here's a quick thrown together list of things every player mildly interested in PvP (and it all helps with PvA as well) needs to do.
1. Use a client (mudlet being the most common one), just a lot more robust than the html5 one 2. Use a curing system (SVO, Wyndersys are the 2 most common ones at the moment afaik) 3. Learn how to write aliases/macros 4. Buy 100 of each curative and 1 elixir/salve 5. Check HHELP for any combat scrolls 6. Join the City/House combat clan (ooc or ic) 7. Ask on HNT for help on your class kill strategy or message the house officer in charge of combat if no one is around 8. Practice in the arena as often as possible
This will get you the foundation, you can expand on this yourself once you've grasped the fundamentals
I've played 3 classes the entire time I've played Achaea, so that part is completely untrue.
I'm not going to argue with whether my decision was right or not, however I would say my results speak for themselves. That's not to say I couldn't have done it in Targossas, but I didn't feel that way. As you said that was completely up to me.
My question is if you saw me dying to stupid things, and you kept track of your K:D ratio at the time: Why is this the first I've heard about it? Wouldn't it be advantageous to pull the noob aside and say hey you're doing x wrong and should try y. I could be mistaken but I'm pretty sure this never happened. If it had, maybe I wouldn't have left Targossas?
I asked plenty of people (including the ones you listed) about what to do and got very small information from them. Again, if I felt the information was adequate, why would I have left? Every person that I interact with in combat situations, I've asked questions of at one point or another. I knew nothing when I started, so I'm 100% positive I asked questions at that time too.
In the end, it doesn't matter. I've learned what I learned entirely from the paths that I've taken my character through. You can ask anyone, I'm constantly telling people things I see them doing wrong to try to make sure they have information they won't get elsewhere. I've taken strives to teach any of our young people in Mhaldor anything I am able. You may disagree with my decision but that's okay. I still stand behind it as being the reason I'm where I am now combat wise.
Penwize has cowardly forfeited the challenge to mortal combat issued by Atalkez.

The whole "we care" thing is nice too, though.

Field Plate: Cutting% 24; Blunt% 26;
If you can wear Field Plate, you can wear Fullplate, anyway, which is like this:

And the contents of my alias:
svo.doadd("extract prime")
gprime2 extract salt/queue add eqbal gprime3
gprime3 extract mercury
My actual one then calls cprime to combine all three stacks.

That answer has no bias whatsoever.
