Well, it's time for the state election. I decided to vote early rather than wait in line on voting day. I also decided to take pictures of the ballot paper for...reasons.
This is the first, for the lower house:
The way this works is you put your numbered preference from 1 to 5 in your preferred candidate order. When the votes are counted, the candidates that have the fewest number 1 preference votes are knocked out of the running. When that happens, those who were knocked out, the other numbered votes on those ballots are distributed to the respective candidates. If that sounds complicated, wait for the next one.
This is the ballot for the upper house. There are 2 ways to vote on this one. You can put a single number above the line in one box. If you do that, the party you vote for distributes their preferences to the other candidates based on their party lines. Some of the smaller parties and independents make deals with the larger parties to give them support if they get voting preference. Or you can number every box below the line, from 1 to, in this case, 52. Doing it this way lets you decide where the voting preference goes, so you might like one party, but they may distribute some of their votes to a candidate you don't like, so you can add your votes to the party you like and give a lower preference to the candidate you don't. I'm pretty sure most people vote above the line because it's easier and they don't really understand the upper house election method. I prefer to vote below so I know exactly who my votes go to.
Just for fun, the federal elections are run the same way, but the upper house ballots are usually much bigger. Last election there were, if I remember correctly, 104 upper house candidates to vote for. Fun times!
Couple of black & white pics I took recently. First is Nicasio Reservoir north of SF, in full darkness, and the other is a marsh way out on Pt. Reyes at twilight, also north of SF.

The fact that reservoir still has water in it astounds me.
Here they have a "Provincial list of parties" and a "National list of parties" and you put a cross next to the one you want.
I mean I guess I can see from a statistical back end how your votes are more useful in getting an accurate count but that'd require the voters to actually have a clue what they're doing... and I feel like a lot of people won't have a clue.

They do teach it to us in school, but you're right, most people either don't know what they're doing, or they consider voting a chore and want to get it over with as quickly as possible. Either way results in the same. You're also right about the level of accuracy the votes carry, which, if I remember correctly, was the reason they went with the preferential voting system.

Krenim: Hounds? How cliche.
