@sobriquet Seems a shame to eat the potato when you could just have a 7th pint of Guinness :D
My coworker mentioned that they forgot the colcannon.  Is this true?
Janeway: Tuvok! *clapclap* Release my hounds!
    Krenim: Hounds? How cliche.
Janeway: Tuvok! *clapclap* Release my rape gorilla!
    Krenim: ...We'll show ourselves out.

Because the world never has enough good music and instruments.

Hmmm, that's a halloween tradition for the most part I think. Cut up in mashed potatoes.

Though bacon and cabbage could be what they're thinking of?

  • C: are expectations bad?
MD: well, they're bad for us, because we can never live up to them, but once she learns to lower her expectations, everyone will be happy!

  • I think we've all been there.

Yeah, except instead of water it was Everclear, because apparently sober me is as much of an asshole as drunk me...

  • @Trey that meat thing is fucking horrifying. Thank you for that. Thanks. -_-

You lost me at the implication that light was a sentient being.

  • It could very well be. What is consciousness, but the constant pulse of electricity through brain matter? It isn't a tangible thing... so who's to say that light itself cannot have consciousness?
  • Sentience is not the same as consciousness, sentience is the capability for abstract thought.

I'm not going to deny that it's possible on a level we don't understand, but I also consider the likelihood of that to be quite slim.

  • What creates those abstract thoughts though? Brains are made up of the same matter and through our experience we program in thoughts, but there is something more to it. If I beleive I Love Science there was actually a tentative discovery of a major type of memory that when recalled wasn't the result of synapses firing but the memory just appeared.

i am quite fond of the ghost in the machine idea. So maybe there are ghosts out that just don't inhabit machines.

also, it's god damn Terry Prachett. The world is a disc on elephants riding a giant turtle that swims through the universe. Light can be sentient if it wants to be.

Consciousness and sentience are pretty synonymous.

    Ehr... no.

All animals are conscious and precious few of them come anywhere close to sentience.

Moar meat-people, plz. (I can't stop thinking of that fucking thing. It looks like Conway Beiber, the Family Guy bit D:

That's because you don't have a proper appreciation for metaphysics. For shame

Not sure what you're basing that from, but it seems to run contradictory to anything I've ever read. Then again, it's rather a moot argument as it's all based in ambiguous philosophy which science tries to sort out.

I am going to hold my hands up to correction, here. Had confused the definition of the word sentience with the ability to reason. My bad.
