Why the rise of cosplay is a bad sign for the US economy

It's opinions and articles like this that make the rest of the world facepalm and mutter "Americans."

It couldn't POSSIBLY be related to the fact that it's 2014 and the Age of the Geek and that human society is actually growing the fuck up into something more than a bunch of mouthbreathing homophobic jocks pushing people into lockers because they like to do fun things like Magic the Gathering or MMO gaming, Comic book collecting or any of the immensely fun ways to spend their time. Like text based MUDs for another example.

Go one better, write a proposal that you seem to have found a corollary link between the two, however in order to gain a better sample size and more statistically significant data, you would require a government grant in order to fund a study.

Well, there always is some underlying economic/psychological/societal reason. There is for every trend. Exactly what the reason is, whether it's negative, and how much you want to focus on it... those things are, of course, up for debate.
