  • Don't care much about piling up numbers and data for comparison and stuff, but all I know is that I've had my Macbook Pro for twice as long as any of the PCs I had before, and it's running just as smoothly and fast as when I bought it, with everything in perfect working order, no antivirus to clog it down. Not saying that this can't be the case for well-built PCs just as much, but all of these price comparisons are usually comparing macs with PCs that have nice specs, but low-quality parts. A sturdy, high-quality PC doesn't tend to be very cheap either.
  • I built a top gaming PC for 1000 bucks, 200 of that was windows and shipping.

    Runs like a charm.

People who believe that macs do not need antivirus programs are delusional.

  • I don't believe anything. I just never had one.
  • I don't run an antivirus and I don't have any viruses.
    I see it like this....
You can buy a little mazda and put in performance parts and you can race the shit out of that car and it'll be awesome fun yada yada and it'll break but you'll probably be able to fix it on your own if you're building a little sporty racer... It's not meant to last forever, it's gonna break down and have issues because you're hot dogging around in it. Etc. That's how I see PCs.
Plus all the virus crap that comes along with PCs.

Or you can buy a volvo. It runs fast, smooth and last forever if you aren't an idiot. Might cost more, might cost more to work on, but if I wreck your PC mazda with my MAC volvo, I'm gonna be safe and you're gonna need a new car.
You ARE paying for quality. Even -if- the PC has different performance perks/usages.

I still never get viruses. Ever.  :x

Why not just get a Honda? Had it for 10 years, been hit three times, still good, still looks brand new...parts are easily replaceable, can do the work myself or spend a little money and have someone else do it? :P

  • Also... I bought my laptop refurbished for 800 bucks. Works perfectly. Don't need to spend 7 grand. Don't even need to spend 2 or 3 grand unless it's for like graphics design work purpose and you just need a beast.

  • Like I said, I have a gaming PC for 800 for all the hardware, and it's easier to fix than a mac, I can promise you that. How easy is it, you ask?

Turn off power. Replace part. Turn on power.

  • Elementary hours: done.
    Middle school hours: done.

My elementary teacher was amazing.  She was so good that I'm afraid of teaching elementary levels x.x

My middle school teacher was amazing in a different way.  The students were doing an activity in the computer lab, so I got to stand ther and ask her a bunch of questions, mostly involving worst case scenarios.

Rant:  The only thing currently keeping me from working is a high school principal who can't seem to return any of my calls or find the time the schedule two hours of classroom observation.

    Here, let me help.

    *gets on facebook*
*navigates to high school calculus teacher's page*
    *clicks message*
Hi!  Remember how we discussed my training in the substitute certification program? May I observe your classes from 8:30 - 10:30 tomorrow morning?
*gets message back ten minutes later*
    Sure!  See you then!

THERE.  ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS TYPE THE WORDS "[REDACTED] HAS COMPLETED TWO HOURS OF OBSERVATION UNDER WATCH OF [REDACTED]," SIGN IT, AND LET ME THANK YOU.

I have a PC. I bought it for 250 bucks refurbished in 2010.
I have never had a problem with it.

There are viruses for Macs, btw.

Of course. There are also viruses for pretty much any type of phone - or even pocket calculators. No OS can be completely safe from malicious code, but in the end it always comes down to assessing whether the risk of damage outweighs the drawbacks of using antivirus software, and this risk varies quite a lot between different operating systems, for a variety of reasons. And then there are many more factors that play into it as well, of course, such as how you use your computer, if it contains sensitive data, etc.
  • There's a reason no one codes viruses for macs.

Oh, derp. I misread what she wrote.

I know. It's because mac users know kung fu.
  • There are two reasons people on Macs don't get viruses. One is because only a small portion of the viruses made are for Macs, due to most of the world running PCs instead. Second is that Macs have built in anti-virus so you don't need to buy additional software. PCs don't have nearly as much built in anti-virus.

Any Mac with the same specs of a PC is going to be more expensive. People consider Macs "higher quality", but for the most part it's not really true. Most of the parts come from the same factories built to the same specs and are of same or very similar quality. You pay a lot for the name/brand, for thinner/lighter laptops and for the additional service/warranties afterwards (which if you aren't dumb you don't really need).

It also used to be that Macs were a lot better at mutlitasking/doing heavy tasks (such as video editing), but that's not really true anymore, especially as programs begin to catch up with the dual/quad/more processors.

tl;dr Mac people have always over paid.

  • All I know is every PC I've ever had I pretty much threw out the window or across the room because of the amount of maintenance I had to do to keep it running smoothly. Antivirus software on PCs always caused problems AND never stopped viruses. I actually, literally beat an old PC laptop as well as a verizon flip phone (back when Razors ruled the world) with a baseball bat in my back yard once. It felt AWESOME! Cause it was a piece of crap!
I'm not a porn browser. I'm not even a questionable site browser.
I use like ....the same 10 sites over and over. And I often google "adorable animals" and just see what is gonna make my day next. It's like the most risky thing I ever do on the internet itself.
All my shit runs smooth as silk on a mac, as it should. On my past PCs...not the story. Ever.  EVER!!! RAGE!! I HATE PCS! I HATE THE ANGER THEY MAKE ME FEEL!!! DON'T JUDGE ME!!!

Did your husband use your PC? Or did you download music/movies?

@Synbios be careful, my husband plots to steal you from Achaea.

Got several tells from MKO fleshlings asking me if I'm the same player from Achaea. It may have begun.

Nope. I wasn't married back then! It was just me. My roommates didn't even use it. And I didn't download stuff.Just ripped mp3 files from other friends' ipods and what not.

  • And there we go.

  • I like how we can say fuck on the forums again.

  • On the Mac vs PC topic. As as graphic designer and animator, I will say hands down I prefer Mac OS and their machines. Yes, they suck for video games because the whole point of those machines are to act as render farms and as a real workhorse. At uni we tested this out by rendering a 5mins 2D animated short film. My MacBook Pro took 8h non stop to render the final 12GB file, while my friend's high-end Alienware Windows laptop actually overheated and died rendering after three hours. This is while it was also running After Effects, Premier Pro, and Nuke at various times. You cannot compare the two because they each serve different purposes. Also, F U film codecs! I hate people giving me files rendered out with Intel or Cinepak because Intel is Windows only and Cinepak is just crap compared to H264.

ps - that MBP I used was back in 2006. I still have it today. Longevity is the reason I paid so much for this baby.

I think the real question of computing power is running skyrim on max settings with an enb and 100+ texture and immersion mods. All while remaining stable and lag free.

    I hate my graphics card.

  • As long as my system latency is only about 1-2% of my network latency when playing Achaea, I'm happy with my computer's performance anyways.
