    It could be worse, of course. I could easily see someone giving an interesting RP backstory for a short, vowel-less name.

    As far as I can tell the strictness on names is near nonexistent. Offensive ones get changed but otherwise it is extremely (and disappointingly on my opinion) lax.

    HELP NAMES is pretty un-restrictive these days. Purely conjecture, but I think the idea is to not put people off by having one of the first messages they see be "your name is unacceptable." Ideally they'll sort of pick up on that themselves and change it of their own volition, with genuine intent for their character to be taken more seriously.
