I've never cared about autowalkers with city geography requirements because I've never found a situation where I've been like "God damn it, this noob only knows how to autowalk.".

that's cause Mhaldor's built around two concentric circles. It's not like the sprawling cityscape of the other 3 cities. If you said 'take me to Maric by the Circle of Pain', the kid can go either right or left and he'd still get it right.

Knowing the city's layout is part of the immersion process, something that's more likely to be broken if you only use autowalkers.
I would expand this sentence to include all of Sapience. Knowing where places are in relation to other places builds the world up, giving a sense of scale and the feel that it's not just a set of rooms. It also helps if you even end up lost and only have a general idea of where you are on the map, you know that "hey if I go south west for a while I should stumble upon Mog" or just knowing the general direction of a place, you can find it without the help of auto walkers which makes things much more immersive.

Stupid broken mouse, always double clicking. New one on Monday, yay!
  • Still pointless. 30% of my friends quit because of geography requirements. It's hard enough to convince people an all-text game has merit.

The first time I played, it was pre-IG map, and I quit because of navigation.

Hmm, I can see how that could be for some. I've always had a head for geography once I had enough reference points to work from. I remember my reqs in the warlocks, having to go to all the major cities without any kind of map other than the massive "all rooms in Achaea" one. But that said, you shouldn't need an auto walker if you already have a map that tells you were you are at all times, even the HTML client has that now. Autowalk all you want outside of trials, but if it's just a jaunt across the city, prove that you know how to read a map at least and walk it manually.

Another point for me at least is that my lag makes the auto-walker bug out constantly, sometimes it's just faster to walk it myself.

I'm okay with autowalkers as long as they still know how to get around without one. It's not a problem in Mhaldor where it's easy to get around but outside, just to check if they know the relative locations of places, I ask them to start somewhere else and describe their path to our destination.

@Tvistor: I guess we have different feelings on geography requirements. Even with autowalkers, I find it fascinating to know where places are relative to each other. I think I used the illustrated map more than Asara's when I was a real novice.

  • I did all my geo tests on Nexus so I had no choice but to walk everywhere manually. This is pretty much on the few reasons why I can walk to places faster old school instead of using GOTO. Now with Targossas around stuffing up the autowalks for a bit, manual treks are all the more important and efficient.

  • I stopped using autowalkers ever since the day I switched to Mudlet and couldn't for the life of me get the Mudlet mapper to work. There were times when someone following me asked me OOCly "How the hell are you moving so fast?" and be all surprised when I admit that I was manualing that entire time.

I'll admit that when I started, the only reason I got anywhere at all was by carefully feeling my way around. It took me like a week to put a foot out of the city when I stopped being able to use portals. Then I discovered the maps on the Achaea website, and much joy was had.

There's a difference between using maps and autowalking, though. I don't really mind if people use autowalkers, but I agree that it is much more interesting to actually learn about the areas and get a 'feel' of them, so to speak, else they're all just the same rooms with varying lengths of text that nobody reads. I purposely set it so that I see verbose room descriptions so I can better visualise my surroundings, and I've found that it really helps for a more immersive experience.

  • I used to follow roads the first time around. It was still just a ton of hassle trying to keep up with navigational requirements.

I've adapted, and can now memorize an area's layout after glancing at it for like three seconds, but that was suuuch a pain starting out.

I always followed the (road) so i wouldn't get lost. Never undrstood how someone could take a shortcut through the savannah and not get lost.
I never like using the roads because there would almost always be somebody trying to have some kind of skirmish along it with gravehands/adduction/walls/fire/whatever hindering your movements. It's faster to run through the Savannah or Aureliana … basically anything to not go through New Thera :|

  • I just wandered everywhere multiple times as a newbie before the routes and my deathsights started looking familiar. Sadly, the routes took longer to recognize than the deathsights. Some time I should pop into Mesmerium and chat with the dream horrors for old time's sake or something.
Wormholes have spoiled me so much.

In my day you had to find your way around Hashan with an Asara map strapped to your hand, up hill, both ways, in the bloody snow.
I got lost so many times because of fricking snow... I ended up in far flung parts of the map and convinced I was going to have to quit the game because I was never going to find civilisation again.

MAPless Achaea. Oh God, the memories. The crippling fear of stepping outside Shallam, being relegated to ratting for xp and gold, lest I be lost in the wilderness outside.

  • When I started playing, Corinth had all the maps available printed out, so I stuck to those like butter on bread. Then I figured out Zmud's mapper... then got mudlet. I still manual it when I'm not in a rush since I honestly just need the visual representation.

  • I didn't even know people had maps available for the longest time. I used to write down commonly used paths and keep them by my keyboard.

  • Wow.  As a newbie I am extremely spoiled with the Mudlet mapper and crowdmap.  Without them I'm not sure I'd have figured enough geography out before Aaric got booted from the house for taking too long on his novice requirements. :|

Always have done the walking myself whenever doing tests and the like, though. Would've felt like cheating otherwise.
  • Clearly, none of you have attempted to map Targossas with only your wits, phase, and a Google spreadsheet.

  • I did it even more hardcore and didn't use my wits. Wits are OP.
  • Another here who basically stuck to home city/small path outside before maps. I have the opposite problem to Sena. I can quickly memorise and remember my way around somewhere after going there a few times with a map, but without I was screwed.
