You honestly have to be a masochist to make it to dragon. I did it as a monk, and I can't imagine how horrible and grueling it must be as a serpent or such. You really just have to buckle down and grind out the areas. Great hunts and double xp helps though. I also recommend finding someone to race you.
Was on a lazy sailing trip back from Ilyrean Isles down through Eirenwaar Island on Inexorable. Had @Aepas and @Xer on the the ship with me. Was turning the ship when suddenly:
Silent and deadly, a Caspiite war citadel glides in from the northeast. << Oh shit.
Cue frantic switching from deck to figurehead. Managed to outsail the war citadel. Thought we were in the clear and relaxed for a while. Continued sailing downwards.. and then spotted another ~ on the distant south of my map. Started sailing frantically. Look at map after a turn, almost died of a heart attack because it teleported to two squares away from me. More sailing to get away. I thought we wouldn't see much action anymore. Hit a chop, turned east. Saw this:
A huge tentacle rises up into the sky next to your ship. << I thought it was flavour text. Boy, how wrong I was.
The tentacle slams down onto your ship.
Cue more hurried sailing to get away with 60% hull. Turn another narrow chop pattern. Find another citadel waiting for me. x_X At this point, I thought I wouldn't make it. More sailing. Managed to flee. Saw another citadel coming up west across the row of chops. See Claw cove northeast of me. Finally sailed to safety. Whew.
I swear. Whichever Divine was controlling those citadels and those tentacles, I love you so much. That was the craziest sea adventure I ever had, with my sailors in tow. <3<3
We (sort of) get double experience a lot now, which never used to happen.
Greathunts are double xp weekends.
Occasional double xp Thursdays, critical hit Tuesdays, truefavour Mondays or w/e.
Traits made everyone do more damage and become more tanky.
Critical hits made high end bashing go twice as fast.
Special things such as the clover that gave people extra crits, the double xp orb, etc. make it faster.
There are tons more mobs that are worth more xp now (addition of vertani, tweaking of dun fortress, mhun knights/keepers, underworld/annwyn, LHG, etc)
Dying costs less xp now, praying is irrelevant.
IRE elite gives a bonus to xp. (this is huge with pk. If I kill Tanris and Tanris kills me, we both end up with 25% of the kill experience. In the past we both would have been even)
No experience loss for dying in your city.
House/mentor bashing was buffed a little bit.
Lots of classes have had their mob damage increased.
If you roll that all into one, bashing to dragon now will take you less than half the time it used to if you get in some good bashing on double xp days/weekends.
The only negative thing I can think of is that Hermes/Lupus can't/don't give out truefavours like candy anymore.
"BACK IN MY DAY, WE WALKED TO DRAGON. IN THE SNOW. AND WE DIDN'T -HAVE- YOUR FANCY SPECTACLES OF WHITESIGHT, NO SIREE. WE GOT LOST IN THE SNOW AND THE ICE AND WOUND UP BACK IN MINIA AGAIN BEFORE WE DID IT ALL OVER. AND WE -LIKED- IT DAG NABBIT."
Not to say its harder than before, because I'm sure its not, and I didn't do a lot of bashing pre traits. But its damn hard to do now, if you're not gung ho about mindlessly bashing for hours everyday. I can't even script or handle house business while bashing, because of having to move to the next room every 15 seconds.
Not to mention bashing is extremely frustrating. I lose an hour and a half worth of bashing in a death. I lose 5+ hours of bashing everytime we get raided or we raid.
When you consider that 30 minutes of RP/PvP/group conflict which is good for Hashan and the game, can wipe out 5 hours of solely performing a menial task, then yeah, screw dragon.
You're a str monk. It should not take you an hour and a half to bash back the xp you lose from one death. It should take a third of that time if you're doing it efficiently.
Not everyone has the Iron Elite thing, TFs, mentor/protege bonuses, or anything like that. Add that to being limited to what I hunt due to RP (No innocents, no Mhun, no civilians or other untrained things) and my gains are sloooow.
Okay, sorry, I gave you the benefit of the doubt and assumed you set up your stats relatively all right, and not just about the worst you could possibly do as a monk. My bad.
I spec'd for bashing, since at the time of race changes I was still in the 70's range and knew I wanted to get 80 at least.
Besides, when I kill people, its gratifying to correct them when they accuse me of dishing out loldamage because of arties/spec. Talisman and lvl2 knuckles are the only damage altering arties I have.
@Ruth, looks like you had a fun adventure! Seen lots of citadels, but never a sea monster. As for who did it... c'mon, it's the ocean, I'll give you one guess.

@Cooper not bitching about dragon being hard to get, I actually think it's very reasonable, and wouldn't want it made any easier. I was just commenting that it really slows down after 80.
You guys are most likely all doing it wrong. Camp the spawn times of the best bashing areas and watch/listen lots of tv, movies, music, podcasts whatever. Food and drinks help too. Try to get at least 3-5% an hour.

That guy in the background is totally Neraeos. Why are you posting such a disturbing picture of him, @Skye?!

I've never done much sailing, and only recently obtained some specializations sooo that was insane! I was freaking out as though I still got combat jitters (I miss those) so it was a good change of pace.
I felt so useless trying to be on the crows nest, calling out the location of them "Oh, their off to the east, long range.. I think we lost them."
Silent and deadly, a Caspiite war citadel glides in from the east
"CAPTAIN OH EM GEE THEY ARE RIGHT THERE DO SOMETHING!"
The seafaring jitters never truly go away either. You're always risking more than your own life, but your crew (denizen and player), your gold, time, cargo. Losing your ship feels like you're actually losing something of significance.
dragon is easy, just hunt off plane in places like Mysia, Meropis so people will leave you alone more. Set a daily goal of say 10%, you'll level 3-4 times a RL month then.

Big rave for @Arador, @Tirac, @Katzchen, and @Calaurn for helping make knight combat a little easier to deal with and understand.
Mini rave for baby steps at combat. Raves to @Vadimuses and @Mudlet, I still have nightmares about trying to build my own system from scratch on zMud.
Additional rave for @Jurixe for the little interaction to encourage me to participate in the city project before it ended, and reminding me that RPing Evil isn't just blood and gore.

You see several cloaked figures emerge from the rocks to the south, and go down to the beach to meet
the citadel.

I'm fairly certain it's Neraeos' Evil Twin though.
