The sweltering heat of the forge spills out across the land as the rumbling voice of Phaestus booms, "I want you to know, the Garden reaction to that one is: What?" The voice of Melantha, Goddess of the Seasons, echoes amid the rustle of leaves, "That's the censored version."
That's awesome. I want one, minus the hand cramping.
Well I would be willing to sell this obviously as it was one reason I wanted to get into it in the first place. I would need to figure out how much though if you are wanting to buy it or anyone else.
@Anadiania I usually do cost of goods + time per hour + 10%! Granted linocuts are a cheaper medium and per hour is stock standard $25/h but still, haven't had a client say no to a job with that margin in mind. Ppl will pay what they think something is worth.
"Faded away like the stars in the morning, Losing their light in the glorious sun, Thus would we pass from this earth and its toiling, Only remembered for what we have done."
crochet and cross stitching here. Mostly just for gifts. I tried figuring out how much I'd actually charge for the blankets I make...and when they take 2 months or so to churn out plus about $50 of (cheap) yarn...I can't justify what I'd have to charge to be reasonably paid for my time. So I make them as gifts.
Heh I have an old quilt I received from one of my chiefs back in Iraq. His mother helped make them for our section while we were there. Still looking great and it's something that I am glad I still have from there.
@eld - time per hour means time spent in hours on said project.
example:
Say I work for 5 hours per day on a 70-square afghan. It takes me two months. 5 hours times 60 days is 300 hours spent on that item. Delaware Minimum Wage is 7.25/hour. It would come to $2,175. Cut that in half? $1,087.50. Yeah. I'd be lucky to get $100 for the afghan, less $50 for the yarn (which nobody ever buys at full price. Hoard those 25% off total bill coupons for Joann Fabrics....), my net profit is $50 for 300h work.
@Jozlyn Does it cost anything to get a shop on etsy? I figure there is portion that goes to them for hosting it but haven't done the research into it just yet.
@Qwindor there is a fee but it's small, and I cannot remember the details. Now with pinterest I see friends increasing their sales. Someone will pin one of their items and they'll sell out. Good luck. That's nice work!
Best thing to do is to look around Larp armour sites. Decorative bracers are often sold singly. For that one I would be willing to pay £20-30 (you need to convert it ). Etsy shops are popular, though charge a fee, as does using ebay. It's a lovely bracer, though I wouldn't purchase it due to the obvious emblem, where as a fan would snap it up!
If you're looking to do it as a serious money maker, I'd suggest looking for SCA/Renn Fair activities in your area. Lots of people that go to those sort of things will pay a decent some for good leatherwork that they can get their hands on, because alot of the stuff they see online seems exorbitant. Depending on your area, it could be a sellers market.
The only issue with that is booths and such for renfest's are normally not exactly cheap and normally done for returning crafters that do it for a living and not just as a hobby. I mean I would love to do it full time but I also love being in the military. Ebay I don't really like to sell on but Etsy doesn't charge a ton really and as a hobby I would rather cater to people who are looking for that type of stuff and would use it rather than people who just buy to buy things.
Edit: @Ourania You know I could do a commission if you want. That's mainly what I was thinking of doing as well to sell things and such.
Meh, who said anything about a booth. Plot down a quilt, display your wares. Anyone at the Renn Faire complains, tell them you're but a humble traveling merchant.
Alright, well I was gonna wait until my senior pictures to begin posting my "player pic", but then... I was at the fair.. and I took my first ever selfie and it was with a goat. I have no shame in this selfie, because it is awesome. Despite how unflattering it may be (According to @Halos), I decided to post it anyway.
This was my cross country meet this year, worth sharing since I wore the amazing shades for the entire race

cost of materials + time spent per hour. Then divide that number at LEAST in half.
Welcome to the world of crafting, where if you were to charge what you actually put into it, nothing would sell.

Edit: Horrible spelling
The chairman does not look happy at being made to look cute me thinks.
