We must be off the map if they're calling pumpkin a vegetable.

As opposed to what? A fruit?

Botanically, it is a fruit. Culinarily, it's a vegetable.

Yup, and the context of the image in question is pretty clearly culinary, hence my wondering what else one would be inclined to call it. Partly curious as to whether some people would actually consider it a fruit in the culinary sense, for some reason.

I actually have heard of people considering pumpkins culinary fruits, mostly because they're used to make sweet pies (kind of like rhubarb).

Right, that's the only reason I could think of, but the same is true of sweet potatoes, which I'd definitely call a vegetable; I can't think of any other common sweet vegetable pies, offhand, but I'd be a little surprised if there weren't at least a few. I guess maybe it would make sense if that's the only culinary use you know of for it. OTOH, I wouldn't have thought to call rhubarb a culinary fruit, either, though it seems it's commonly considered such, so what do I know?

Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is knowing not to put it in fruit salad.

Tharos, the Announcer of Delos shouts, "It's near the end of the egghunt and I still haven't figured out how to pronounce Clean-dat-hoo."

I imagine with a little creativity one could come up with a pretty tasty fruit salad involving tomato.
  • I was being technical. much like a tomato, technically, pumpkin is a berry.

It's funny because she used to be on a show called "Play School" over here so people who grew up around the same years I did know her quite well and get a kick out of this.
