Change is simple. For praying after X minutes or throw you into a saferoom so you don't get ganked infinitely at cave.
All I know is that we've all seen some idiots die and hang around as a soul throwing around insults. I don't see why the experience loss is required though.
In retrospect though, I think regular death penalties would be sufficient 'punishment' for going AFK. We don't lose experience in cities though, so a change there would create a total safezone if you don't mind some embarrassment.
Some punishment for staying as a soul is definitely needed. Think of it this way, staying as a soul without any consequence whatsoever is the same as evading any kind of responsibility past a single death. I could insult the entirety of Ashtan, die once, and stay as a soul for ages until they all get bored. That's not a reasonable thing to happen.
It definitely sucks that you didn't timeout there though - I think maybe there should be a forced timeout on souls, no matter what after an certain period of time. There really isn't any reason why someone would remain as a soul for more than, say 30 minutes to the best of my knowledge. Correct me if I'm wrong on that account though.
Afking was so strongly discouraged when I started playing and it still ought to be. Achaea is a role playing game, despite the surplus of OOC clans, and if people didn't log in and go afk ( I am guilt of it myself when logging in from work ), there would be far less issues.
It's not very encouraging in general to try avenues of communication with some people only to get a response three hours later when they suddenly alt-tab back into the game.
What happened to Alyssea is terrible though
(D.M.A.): Cooper says, "Kyrra is either the most innocent person in the world, or the girl who uses the most innuendo seemingly unintentionally but really on purpose."
Edit: And thinking of it, I've never heard of anyone getting killed while afk in an RPI I've played. You generally have to participate to get yourself killed spectacularly there.
The ONLY reason I got seafaring was for ship return. It is the best unexpected afk ability ever. "Oh shit my cat is on fire." *SRG* (ship return go alias) On boat when you return. Unless you're like me and frequently get your boat dry docked WHILE I'm on it.
I ask this in complete seriousness... and as someone who tends to pretty much embody a bit more casual approach to Achaea/doesn't like things to be needlessly punitive - what happens that you just can't log out?
It doesn't work when you have a system, I imagine Svo is gagging some sort of trigger during that entire process that kept you from idling out. Seeing as everyone has a system these days, the whole "idle out if you don't do anything once you're dead" thing is pretty much a moot point from a bygone era.
Let me get this straight... Achaea implements a timeout mechanic as a safeguard against unwillingly staying logged in for long stretches of time while afk/disconnected. Some systems code some weird stuff that make this mechanic no longer work. And now it's somehow still the fault of Achaea that people stay logged in as souls forever, and not the fault of those systems?
I have a system too. It has no problems with letting me time out.

You got the gist of it Iocun. The SYSTEM prevents logout, not Achaea. I have a 2min timeout and never have an issue getting logged out if that hits. Personal system though, not a mass marketed one.

Network disconnect and not being able to reconnect.
Right, but here people are saying that their systems are performing actions that prevent the timeout from kicking in (i.e. their connection is fine). I get that, but I don't get why you can't just log out. I also wonder how Iocun's knows he's AFK, but that's a different question.

But in that case, you'd time out (unless you had for some reason set CONFIG TIMEOUT 0), because svo/your system wouldn't be sending anything.
Of course, I've had the timeout warning whilst asleep before (so svo was paused, as above) - so I don't think it's that.
Also, this post may have looked like I'm being completely unsympathetic. As someone who does not enjoy bashing, and is incredibly slowly making his way to L80, I know how frustrating that must be, Alyssea.
Yeah, this would piss me off royally too, and I'm not really necessarily asking/directing my question towards Alyssea in particular, but it seems like lots of people leave their chars idling for hours, and it just seems odd to me, and I'm curious *why* they do it.
I hadn't really thought about that - I wouldn't say I agree that should be allowed/encouraged to become more of a norm, but I see why people would be motivated to remain online, whether they were "there" or not.
I can't think of anything a system should be doing every 2 minutes (timeout is 2 minutes for souls no matter what you have it set to) while you're dead.
I've almost never had the problem of having to gtfo the comp really quick without guarantee of a quick return (power outages and d/cs don't count). I recently had occasion to do so when my 1 month old nephew started screaming his head off and needed to be changed and carried until he stopped fussing. I clean forgot I was even online.
Let's just say if we still had old theft, I'd probably have been robbed blind instead of just missing a few sigils and handful of gold.

Normally I would journal or shipreturn and raise commscreen for the same effect when I afk, but the damn New Hope safe room has this horrible effect of encouraging shameless public afk'ing in the entire refugee populace

It's not really that important whether it "knows" that you're AFK. You can just make it stop doing stuff like keeping mass up if you haven't entered any command for X minutes. And other than things like mass upkeep/eating pear underwater, there are few things a system would regularly do on its own without an actual attack happening.
And as Sena pointed out: if you're dead your system shouldn't be doing anything anyways.

You do lose experience in cities, just not off the initial death, so if you Embrace almost instantly or burst you don't lose XP. But you stand around and hang out, you do lose the mana tick experience.
I was having a really good night, and
exterminations ruined it. But I'm going to focus on the good by sharing
this bit of amusement from HT:
- 2013/02/04 03:37:24 - Taril says, "It's hard coming back to new things, with memories of past abilities lost to time."
- 2013/02/04 03:37:32 - Taril says, "I regret losing shark morph the most."
-
2013/02/04 03:37:37 - Ireth says, "Id rather have most of the grove
skills we had when i was younger than paneaca that i dont ever use."
- 2013/02/04 03:38:24 - Kaiya says, "Ahhh, shark morph. Those truly were the days."
- 2013/02/04 03:38:32 - Hannah says, "What did you do with the shark morph?"
- 2013/02/04 03:38:34 - Ireth says, "Granted grove cage was useless to me as well."
- 2013/02/04 03:38:39 - Taril says, "Oh it was tremendous."
- 2013/02/04 03:38:49 - Taril says, "You could use it to travel similarly to the way ships move now."
- 2013/02/04 03:39:02 - Taril says, "You could Bleed Out enemies."
- 2013/02/04 03:39:23 - Taril says, "Rend was my personal favourite. Constant bleeding and entangled."
-
2013/02/04 03:39:54 - Taril says, "If four or more Druids gathered in
shark form, you could form a Whirlpool, which acted similarly to a
Magi's abduction vibration."
- 2013/02/04 03:40:04 - Taril says, "Except it caused drowning through pear defence."
- 2013/02/04 03:40:16 - Taril says, "So you had to eat two pears."
Taril's coming back? Awesome.
When Wessux was first getting into combat, he was always jealous of Paladin's Hands, so whenever he was having trouble with a particular class or aspect of curing, I would routinely "reveal" that Hands would do things like restore mana as well as health, clot bleeding, heal a random affliction, could be used off-balance, or whatever other overpowered perk I could think of at the moment. He almost changed class before he started talking to people other than me about it.

If you don't have artefact pipes, Svo likes to light those constantly, and there's an option to gag it completely, which a lot of people do.
-- Grounded in but one perspective, what we perceive is an exaggeration of the truth.

Exactly. I was in Eleusis when I died, and I lost my two levels from xp drain. Also, I was not purposefully afking. I fell asleep because it was 4 am and woke up two hours later to this. And, it was not Svo that caused me to not be able to time out. I have timed out before while I was playing some other game in another tab. The problem is that when my comp logs me out, I am essentially disconnected, but Alyssea is still there in the game, and timeout never hits.

Gets spammy if you don't though as was pointed out...SVO shouldn't be working if you're dead... to my knowledge it auto-pauses upon death, then unpauses when you're alive again.
