You're right. Humour can be controversial (I assume that's the word you meant?), and subversive. However, that "joke" is not amusing, especially his follow-up comment, because it's placing the blame on the victim. It would be like a "joke" that blames racism on a black person/Asian person/whatever person.

And thinking she's a "dumb broad" for going back just shows how ignorant you are about how domestic violence works:

While that picture is adorable, I find it incredibly offensive that anyone would refer to a victim of abuse as a "dumb broad." I can't leave that alone without saying something.

Seriously? Grow up. Someone informing someone else that they are being a jackass doesn't mean they are in a place that they need to calm down. Disagreement does not equal hysteria, and it is the height of condescension to imply that someone needs to "calm their tits" for pointing out someone's jackassery.

If someone had made the "joke" about their race, and was called out for being racist, would you still tell whoever pointed out their racism to "calm their tits"?

22% of women and 7% of men are victims of domestic violence. Odds are you know someone who is, or has been, beaten by their significant other. Would you make a joke about that to someone you loved who went through that? If not, you shouldn't make it at all.

If you would, well, congrats on being a terrible person.

As someone that grew up with domestic violence, I don't find it at all funny.

I was never spanked as a child. I was beaten. By both of my parents. I've had wooden rulers, spoons, and sticks broken on me. As a six year old. I've felt the kiss of a leather belt that left marks that took months to fade. I have fond memories of sitting on the kitchen floor of my childhood home playing with a doll, when my father came into the room with a thick piece of bamboo and beating me with it until the skin split open on the backs of my legs. I remember going to go school with welts on the back of my legs that the dress of my school uniform didn't quite cover, and feeling so ashamed as I lied to my teacher about where they came from. Because my parents would never have hit me, unless I deserved it, right?

So imagine growing up in a world where your concept of being loved is entwined with pain because you don't know any better. And how dysfunctional your adult relationships are because you have trust issues and an underlying anticipation of the first time someone will hurt you, because it's not real love otherwise. Of how long it will take to undo the psychological scarring of your childhood. So yeah, I fail to find the humour in domestic violence and it's pretty poor taste to joke about.
