    They're pronouncing "mal" as in "malice" or "malcontent".

    As opposed to "mall-ice" or "mall-content".

    I pronounce 'Mall' as 'Mawl'. So do you mean Mawl-door or no?

    I think that's where the confusion is coming from.

    mall = small

    I associated Mhal = mal, the negative prefix, as in malus, malice, maledict, malady etc, and therefore pronounce it in the same way.

    Irrelevant fact: 'cellar door' is described as among the most phonaesthetically pleasant phrases in the English language. There's a whole wikipedia page on this, with Tolkien among the earliest to comment on how totes awes it sounds. And Mhaldor rhymes with it.
