So, basically, this is something they're doing over in Aetolia and it's kind of awesome.
They run events every so often (I think each event is done something like once per month), and the winner gets an artefact that is passed on to whomever wins the event the next time it's ran. They're doing three so far: a cooking event (you don't need the tradeskill), a massive free-for-all brawl, and a duelist event. Now, I don't suggest we copy these straight over, but they're really fun events that you look forward to even if not participating. It's also a way for cities to earn prestige outside of having the biggest killsquad or whatever.
Just look at the latest one:

+--------------------------------- CHANGE ------------------------------------+
New Temporary Artifact: The Rapier of the Master Duelist
Temp. reward for the winner of the bi-yearly Delosian Duel.
- When wielded and POINTed at an enemy, it will teleport the user and
the victim into an otherworldly two-room arena, leaving them in an
uninterruptible fight to the death.
- The victim can choose to SURRENDER within the first 40 seconds of
being brought into the Arena. Such will broadcast a humiliating message
to the game.
- After two minutes in the Arena, shield tattoos and similar abilities
will cease to function.
- If the challenger does not succeed in killing his opponent in around
fifteen minutes, the arena will collapse and kill them, ejecting the
victim back to safety.
- Does not work in buildings owned by organizations (Cities,
Guildhalls).
- Can only be used once per three hours.

I think a lot of people would be engaging in these sort of repeating competitions. Could range anywhere from fishing, to fighting, to crafting, etcetera. Can we please have something like this too? What do you all think?
