When you enter the arena with less than full endurance and willpower, they are reset to 100%, so that you don't have to worry about fighting at a disadvantage. When you leave, they are restored to the levels they were at before you entered, so that you can't use the arena as a free instant endurance/willpower regenerator. There's a complication, though, with arena events where you don't necessarily leave when you die, such as a Rampage or King of the Hill. Currently, whenever you die in one of these events and stay in the arena, your endurance and willpower are reset to the levels they were at before you joined. So, for example, if you join a Rampage after bashing for a while with 1000 willpower left, you get to start your first fight with full willpower, but if you lose, you're left starting from 1000 willpower in your next fight (or meditating for a while before starting another). I would expect that on dying in the arena and staying in whatever game is going on, endurance and willpower would be reset back to 100%. Maybe if you want to them continue to wear down throughout the game, they could just stay wherever they were when you died. But either way, the amount you had when you joined the game should be irrelevant.
I assumed this was simply a bug, and accordingly filed a BUG report, and the response was that this was by design. It may be that my BUG just wasn't clear and was misunderstood. If not, it's a design that should be changed.
