Polearms

So as a avid fan of polearms in real life I noticed that halberds and bardiches are on the HELP WEAPONS file yet has been removed from the game. I was wanting to know if they would ever be implemented again or if there are currently plans for them. Honestly, I wouldn't even mind if they were added back into the game with similar stats as a bastard sword because I just like the flavor of them.

If they were re-implemented how would you ladies and gentlemen like to go about it?
Would you add it to weaponmastery from knight classes or monks?
Would you create another class or just give them the same statistics as another weapon?

With the new class released I highly doubt there will be another class released for another 3-5 years but who knows?

In the the end these are just suggestions and I'm not looking for a super detailed hate report on the idea to outright reject it but criticism is welcomed!

  • I'd imagine they'd be used in two-handed Knight spec, or possibly another spec

Monk specialisation: Staves (like they used to according to Lore) or fists (like at present)

    It'd be interesting, I think.

Otherwise I could see them added as a knight spec, though I cannot imagine what role they'd occupy there.

  • Usually polearms were used against mounted combatants by peasants and such. There were method to use against unmounted combatants as well and were multiple stances used for it. There was a defensive stance that lured the enemy into attacking then allowed you to sidestep and hook the enemy behind the neck or shoulder and force them to be knocked prone. Afterwards you would go in for the kill. Polearms also could have a blunt end, a sharp tip, and a axe on the other side. So damage could change depending on the attack. It all gets really complicated.
  • Also, they had a big edge was in formation fighting which as adventurers, we don't do.

How they were used in reality probably wont have much say in however they are implemented in the game. Mounted combat for the most part amounts to an extra defence against certain limb classes, and as @Greys pointed out, formations are not used at all.

Which is why I think it'd be cool if they were implemented as a way for monks to go back to their staff-using roots.

  • Tbh give me the ability to use a staff as a monk.  it feels awkward jumping 5-6 feet in the air to spin and then do a kick to their face.. every 2 seconds, with 2 punches thrown in during for good measure.

A beaty stick would let me just smash people.

    You don't remember this, obviously:

  • Lmao, I have legitimately never seen that before.

Also, is it bad that I wish Achaea was sort of like Pathfinder in that I could take an alternate class feature.

    Lose: Telepathy

Gain: Some other bullshit to replace it.

I'd hit it.  I'd hit it so hard.

Really? Telepathy's the skill you'd give up? :confounded:

    Huh. Neat.

What's most sad is, this movie is old enough now for me to believe you :(
  • Recently saw this image on Instagram. It made me crave a polearm class/spec.

  • Dropping Telepathy would enable a brawler type monk, that, while focusing on his body and empowering it through ki (maybe even losing a bit of the kai bit at the end of kaido for something else), they would get something to replace the spirituality/mind domination side that monk has.  Allowing a true brawler archetype that is nifty in it's own right.

Also; monk's are squishy as all hell.  I'll keep Kaido to stay not shit-tier at surviving.

I thought it was said a year or two ago that polearms would be reevaluated and potentially released after knight changes were formalized. Also, a staff option for monks would be great.

I've also always wanted to see a duel-wield knife, assassin type class that uses two fighting knives (to do damage instead of focusing on straight affliction delivery like dirks) but also utilizing crossbows and certain fisticuffs.

  • I like the Knight specialization and feel like other classes could benefit from similar mechanics to provide more variety to play style.

I'd love that too, but Maka once said that trying to balance those types of classes is a pain ++

I always wanted an Assassin class that was based on burst damage and swift kills, rather than poisoning. I recall when the Red fist assassins was attacking Hashan, and some of their attacks that I loved.

~ A cloaked assassin grabs a number of daggers with each hand and closes his eyes while chanting unintelligibly. Suddenly, the weapons glow brightly crimson and the wielder spins in a short circle, releasing the deadly weapons in a wide arc. ~ Hurt like a bish.
  • As long as it doesn't go the Lusternia's Cavalier route where you *need* lessons in Riding and/or a steed to function properly.

  • To be fair, you could learn just up to Mount in their version and you'd be good to go. Trans is best, of course.

I mean if it were to be a spec or class focused on riding I'd imagine it'd be like weaponry where relevant skills are learned in the skill in question see: envenom

I imagine polearms would be cool as a new non factional class. Adding them to knights would be a balancing nightmare all over again.

The defender class or something. Or another support style class that hardly anyone plays but everyone griefs the one that happens to be on the other team. Like Jester.

If Jester was less stupid-silly more people would play it. I know I would :(

  • Jester is nice..just needs some tweaking. For example, why balloon giraffes? They have chariots in Tarot...

Also suicide mice always made me sad...

I'd also like it if """"Cavalier"""" mounts are class loyals in that they don't cost you an arm and a leg to obtain. Maybe have 'cavaliermount' be an investable feature on a collared/artied steed if you want to joust with your hydra or something.

Still have Jester as my primary class hoping that one day it gets some love. @Makarios said a few months back that it was on the list to get overhauled, but didn't have a timeline.
  • Sorry been busy with irl stuff so had no chance to come back and read this. I'm really surprised how many people commented on this post. I noticed people mentioned Cavalier but I'm not from Lusternia so I've no clue how it works. Since it was already created and in the system wouldn't it be easier to take feedback from the community and change what wasn't liked and implement that instead of working on it from scratch? I noticed a lot of people mention the staff for monks but in the HELP MONK file it mentions canes. Now...I wouldn't mind beating someone up with a cane... "Twirling his cane in a fast motion, Solus, suddenly stops his cane and jabs it at your forehead.".
