Sword and Shield Knight:Which attacks for Bashing?

Rend's description says it works on Adventurers and Denizens, so I'm assuming that's the weapon attack. However I can't see the Denizen thing in any of the shield attack descriptions.

Which one should I use?

Your main bashing combo is slice+smash. Rend is mainly just what you use before you learn slice, though it does have some very situational uses.
