I would say teh core of the game is the same, with better balancing (long range frigates and starbases are no longer the end all) btu it's not because of the introduction of titans, which can wipe out fleets on their own. Each faction gets one titan and they are all -really- powerful. Level 10 titans can have in excess of 20,000 effective health and mow down almost anything except maybe a group of levelled capital ships/lots of carriers that are kiting/another titan.
the factions have all split into 2 so there are 6 factions now, TEC/advent/vasari and the loyalist/rebel version of each which have various unique abilities.
That said, the new abilities allow for some interesting dynamics (the vasari loyalists for example,c an become a fully mobile fleet that turn worlds into dead asteroids for resources, and gain income/technology from their capital ships instead of from colonising, and gain fleet from phase stabilisers dropped by their titan, which can also eat ships for resources, which is ridiculously powerful combiend with the fact it can blink jump).

Speaking of FTL: Faster Than Light... I got a copy as well earlier in the week, been playing it with some varied success and a lot of defeat. Made it to the boss once, but got utterly thrashed. Then today a series of great and super events put me against the boss again. First phase? Fine, I knew what to expect and how to deal with it. Done and done. Then the second phase. I've been here before, so I knew what was coming, and managed to hang on and scrape by with little damage(yay!). Third phase... I knew not what to expect... But I did it. I finally beat FTL. With one HP remaining.

You can download all of the original marathon games cross platform. I set it on easy mode so I could go through the story quickly, and read all the terminals, without having to constantly reload due to death by super powerful aliens. the mazes will still trip you up. Skipped the original and made it through Marathon 2: Durandal in about a week. I played Infinity for about a week but my head started to hurt. That was too much for my little brain.
I just got The Basement Collection for about $4 on Steam from the dude who made Super Meat Boy. It's a collection of really neat flash games, some procedural in nature. It's worth picking up if you're into that kind of stuff (after the Humble Bundle, of course).

Although looking at the system requirements, I don't think my crappy laptop could handle Rebellion.
