Mixology mini-skill

Purpose- to make drinks

AB MIXOLOGY
You have gained the following abilities in Mixology:
Mix           Mix existing drinks
Water       Use water to prepare new drinks
Drinks       Create your own new drinks
Milk          Use milk to prepare new drinks
Grain        Add alcohol effects to your drink
Alteration  Make minor alterations to drinks you mix
Portions    Wasting less means larger portions

AB MIXOLOGY MIX
Syntax: MIX <drink>
With a basic understanding of mixology, you are able to prepare drinks created by other people. To find drinks, you may use the NDS system.

AB MIXOLOGY WATER
Syntax: MIX <ingredient>
Water is a key component in the creation of water-based drink ingredients, which you have knowledge of making.
Ingredient: Fruit drink / Recipe: 2 water, 1 fruit
Ingredient: Vegetable drink / Recipe: 2 water, 1 vegetable
Ingredient: Kawhe / Recipe: 2 water, 1 kawhe
Ingredient: Tea / Recipe: 2 water, 1 spices

AB MIXOLOGY DRINKS
(the mix drink version of prepare recipe outlined in AB COOKING RECIPE)

AB MIXOLOGY MILK
Milk is a key component in the creation of milk-based drink ingredients, which you have the knowledge of making.
Ingredient: Cocoa / Recipe 2 milk, 1 cacao
Ingredient: Milkshake / Recipe 2 milk, 1 elemental ice

AB MIXOLOGY GRAIN
Grain is a key component in the creation of alcoholic drink ingredients, which you have the knowledge of making.
Because I haven't thought this out enough to type it out completely, the idea here is that ingredients would include basic variations of alcohol brandy / vodka / rum / tequila / wine / etc. each one requiring 2 water and accumulating amounts of grain, based on the strength of the drink. For example wine may take 1 grain, while tequila might take 4 and absinthe 8.

AB MIXOLOGY ALTERATION
(would work similar to cooking miniskill ability)

AB MIXOLOGY PORTIONS
(would work similar to cooking miniskill ability)

  • I think Amunet proposed something very similar awhile back. Don't remember the admin response, though

  • Yeah, some sort of drink-making miniskill is Listed.
  • The players in Achaea are not responsible enough to handle this skill. Grammatically insulting recipes litter Achaea as well as a few that I don't know how ever came to be (the ejaculation pastries?).  Please, for the love of anything I cherish in Achaea, hell no. Not until there is a recipe clean-up.
  • Having the ability to actually brew some of the materials of drinks with the proper ingredients, rather than just buy and mix them, would be pretty interesting too. Maybe not cost effective, considering how much such things would cost, but who wouldn't want to own their own working text-brewery at some point to go along with that text-wine cellar?

  • Make it so that with a high enough mixology skill, if you TASTE the cock's tail you can discern its ingredients.  That way I can figure the ingredients in @Amunet's Silent City drink, make my own and call it Mute Button. Could have some awesome trade wars!

(No, I haven't read the minutiae of this or any previous Mixology proposal, so apologies if this is already on the table!)

You guys realize that the list isn't really that difficult to check out, right?

Surprised nobody raised concern with, for how this proposal was phrased, the fact that alcohol can come from fruit as well as grain and vegetable and blah. Could be neat to make grain early skill and fruit and veggie later skill?

ETA: anyone can gather water. Purifying it as a skill is ok?

I disagree. It usually takes me 5 minutes or so to find the List. WTB decent forum search tool.

There are decent search options available as plugins, e.g. sphinx integration, though convincing the powers that be to look into it is a whole other matter. I'd even consider indexing it and offering a third-party search but that'd require one of the public APIs being activated which puts us back in the same boat.

  • The ability for wines etc to age, accumulate value, and become sought-after would be really cool if that could somehow be executed. Imagine each city having their own winery/distillery and city cellars, with bottled wine not lasting long when removed from those cellars - unless it's stored in a wine cellar upgrade which you can add to your house, or something. 80 years later your half-dozen bottles of well-aged Adikoi claret are rare and sought-after. I don't know how you could mechanically designate value, or simulate the development of flavours or whatever it is that happens to wine when you leave it in a hole for a few decades (since you can't taste text), but it could become its own economy and that would be amazing.

And the old is new again.

Sarapis may still have the design sitting around; he once put together a very detailed design for growing grapes, making wine, and aging it.

Something like that could even make the wildnerness useful (vineyards, farms, etc.)

There's a winepress in the Shamtota Hills where you can do the jump-on-grapes thing, add spices, etc.

I wish that thing was cooler. You can never get more than like... slightly buzzed, no matter how much you drink. Also it doesn't understand that I want to make knaveberry wine. Or Loganberry. Or all those other weird things you can find around the world. It accepts them as ingredients, but the end product is identical to if you used significantly more pedestrian components, like grapes. It's a good start, but it's soooo old that it needs looking into.

You see a few awful recipes and think we are all horrid, @Peak. It's really insulting. I hate the bunny rabbit lollies and third-person pseudo-fellatio messages as much as you do - likely more so - but I don't think that all crafters should be punished due to the indiscretions of an obnoxious minority.
But all special Achaean food has 'orgasm in your mouth' subtexts. Have you ever eaten at Hashan's alehouse?

I only want this skill if I can make really potent drinks with curare and eurypteria mixed in.

I'd go brewmeister just for this.

  • I can see voyria + immunity as Achaea's Red Bull + vodka. Or poppers + viagra.

  • Until people show a general improvement in recipe responsibility, I want a tighter leash on these things. There needs to be some recipe burning done. Or at least a way to flag existing ones to have admins give it a second+ look. It may very well be that a select few are ruining it for everyone, but it's still being ruined imo.

If there is a player that's consistently putting out bad/ooc/or otherwise awful recipes, take away their ability.

As nice as it would be to be able to cull the poor designers, the administration will never do it. Most people spend real-life money on credits for their crafting licenses, making them effectively off-limits for any considerable sanction. The stupidest of designs are typically turned away by the UUC, and what remains tends to have some feeble RP basis - the Pandorans with their asinine cotton candy moustaches, for example, or the BDSM MUDsexers with their bondage collars.

No one -likes- to see this sort of thing, but the only thing you can do is ignore the bad and focus on the good. Just because Coors, Kokanee, and Budweiser dominate the selection of beers on tap doesn't mean I can't just go to a bar that serves No-Li and Moose Drool, you know? There will always be stupid people, and there will always be shitty products. If you don't like it, don't spend your money on it. Plain and simple. Your inability to ignore bad descriptions shouldn't ruin things for the rest of us.

  • I don't want to see an achaean version of trashcan punch.

I would be happy with a way to flag a really horrible recipe to let the admins re-review it. The ejaculation pastries really shouldn't have ever been allowed.

I could get behind a flagging system if there was greater administrative oversight in crafting. I acknowledge that the UUC has severely limited resources, however. Design editing is thankless work, and I trust those in charge of granting the approvals to use their best judgement. If a flagging system is implemented, I worry that more time will be spent reviewing and responding to flags than will be spent approving new designs - most of which will be perfectly fine.

People who fabricate crappy designs do it for the attention. It's best not to give it to them.

More often than not, when additions are proposed to Achaea's crafting - or even when they just get discussed on the UUC clan - I hear about how Achaea's playerbase is not mature enough to handle that kind of responsibility. A few examples would be 1p/3p worn/removed messages and, as per this thread, making drinks.

Seriously? Bring out the banhammer. Or turn offenders all green and leafy. Or just revoke crafting privileges for a few weeks. Why should the many have to suffer because of the indiscretions of the few? It makes me sad.

    Also.

    The cake is a lie.
