    It's still 2k that you didn't have at the start of the transaction. So yes, it is still a profit, just not the optimal profit.

    That's the part I don't understand. Even if gold is all I care about, to me that seems no different from selling off more of my comms to cover the losses from the mining operation. In the end it's still profit, but it's a profit despite the mining, not profits from mining.

    To put it another way, the profits you're calculating have two sources: acquiring cheap stone and iron in the past, and the mining you just did. The profits come at the same time (because you didn't "cash in" the comms before, so it only existed as potential future profit until now), but they're still two distinct sources, and I disagree with adding them together as the profits from the mine.
