If you don't want your current primary class, just quit it and then stay as the second one? If you ever want to pick up a second class again later on, I assume you'd just pay the primary class cost.
It's more like.. does my 2nd slot now count as my primary class, and whatever I learn in my 1st slot will cost me 2500 lessons/transed skill? @Tecton
I would wait for Tecton to confirm, but as far as I can tell it should work like this: When you quit your primary class, your primary class slot is now empty. You get back 50% of the lessons spent on your primary class (so 1738 per Trans skill). Your second class stays as your second class.
If you gain another class, it fills the first empty slot it finds (your primary slot), and you learn with the primary slot modifier (100%).
That's the same way tradeskills work, if I'm not mistaken.

Nope, like tradeskills, it'll always pick the cheapest slot.
But for those of us who have never change class (Speaking purely on Sobriquet here) there is now a total lack of character / class identity. Sure, a habitual class changer used to chop and change a lot and it got expensive but at least there was an identity for that character for a period of time. We aren't all like Seftin, or Ainly or whoever changes class at the drop of a hat.
With guilds we had a unique and distinct identity to our character and what they wanted to be and while Guilds were changed (and rightly so) this seems to have taken us full circle to making a character in spite of their class, not because of it. Just feels... wrong
I'm not saying it's bad, but certainly wouldn't put it in the "awesome" bracket.
There's only a "total lack of character / class identity" if you pick up a second class, and even then only if you allow it to completely change the way your character acts - especially if they acted completely differently based on what class they currently were. Ultimately, your character might be influenced by the class they chose, but they should still be them even if they change away from that class.
My character was heavily influenced by being a Paladin - though much more by the organisations being a Paladin meant he was a part of than the class itself - but all of those things don't just disappear because I picked up Blademaster too.
Following a discussion on the Shamans clan yesterday, I have to disagree with this. We were talking about who is "a shaman" and what that's defined as now? For many of us, playing a shaman is a very RP-intensive thing. We don't just use the class abilities, we embody it. This is the same thing Serpent houses did for a very long time in the realm, and now they're gone...and every third person is a serpent.
What does it mean to be "a serpent" today? Not much. It means that phasing is pretty useless because there are enough other serpents to be running constant phase checks. Does it beget intrigue and stealth? Shady practices and dealings? Only if you're a rogue and care about such things; otherwise you're tied to whatever ideals your City has embraced and the burden of furthering that class identity is on the players themselves.
I guess what I'm trying pretty ineptly to say is that what you're talking about is an individual thing: Am I still a shaman when I switch into my serpent mode, for example? Sure, you can roleplay that. But it's not the same thing as the class itself having a strong identity in the game, which I think is what Sobriquet is talking about here. I'm not against multiclass apart from the exorbitant cost (which like everyone else I'll end up paying one way or another to take the second class I want eventually) but I do recognize that without strong ideals promoted by individual players the identify of classes themselves will become diluted over time.
It's funny really: We used to shake our heads at people who switched into and out of class at the drop of a hat (both because of the cost involved - but hey it's their money - and the lack of a sense of individual character development such actions created). Now we're all clamoring to change class more, faster, cheaper! How times change.
I don't want to be jester. I don't like jester skills. I'm not racially specialised for jester. Jester doesn't fit Kotaru as an identity. But like I said, jester has one thing I need, something nothing else offers. So I'm forced to be jester, or otherwise Kotaru can't do what is one of the most important things to him, to who he is. I had hoped this would be a way to ameliorate that problem, but I have been disappointed. And doubly disappointed that my disappointment is met with 'why do you want things for free!?' And Sarapis' response of 'Well everyone will complain about something' to any reservations about the way it was implemented.

I'll live, but.. eh.
I'm curious. What do you need from jester if not the skills?
Hocuspocus. It is the only way to produce coloured illusions, and as far as I know no method is capable of producing illusions of the same length, not even the staff of illusions.
I would've bought a Staff of Illusions a long time ago if it had that capability.

Wouldn't it be insanely cheap (compared to 'normal' multiclassing) to make jester a second class, with only hocuspocus, then? It's one VERY low ability in one skill.

I was sorely tempted to take Jester for this same thing. If we had an upgraded version of the Staff of Illusions that could do this though..that would be sweet. Hint, hint Garden dwellers!

Multiclass looks perfect for this, to me.
That is what I'm doing, or what I wanted to do anyway. The annoyance is that I need to tritrans a primary class before that becomes possible. Which is something that is not financially feasible for me for a long time.
The point is both colour and length. For the plays Kotaru writes, illusions are an integral part of portraying what I want to. Serpent illusions are like a line and a half max length.
Well...primary a class's you love and adore and train up your 2nd to hocusposus... then in time ditch your 2nd class to learn your next favorite class and relearn hocusposus agian. Doesn't seem all that doom and gloom. Unless your tritrans. Jester already....then I understand your hair pulling....

That makes sense. I imagine you used both no-brainer lesson packages already. That's rough, but it's not impossible. If you have a house or city, lean on creditsales from them when you can. It can seem really far away at times - I know, I changed classes a few times as a broke college kid 9-10 years ago and couldn't spend money on games back then. Somehow, I always made it back to tri-trans.
Well...don't multiclass and just keep on keeping on? I LOVE my class...wouldn't change it for the world.
Kotaru has a concept and wants to make it work. Advice on giving up the concept doesn't help, and honestly, it sounds like a neat one and different than most people's. I like it, tbh, and I can see how the mechanics make it harder.
Kotaru - good luck. You'll get there! At least, right now, it's possible when it wasn't before!
If he is already tri-trans, as a Jester. ..I get it...only for colorful illusion. You don't have to multiclass...it's a mere option. It sounds like he wants to quit class...join one he really likes then 2nd class as jester for one skill...what's the problem. He doesn't have to Trans out his 2nd class.
@trevize, never polish my post with your negativity...thanks in advance.
Yeah @Bluef...I am sure each case is different....I am merely suggesting people don't Have to multiclass. - colored illusion is a perk of the Jesters...if people want to learn a class only for 1 or 2 perks...why is that a problem after 48 hours after multiclass?
