That said, when tradeskills became a thing, Ruth (the then-Tyrannus) made is abundantly clear that harvesting and/or selling herbs in Mhaldorian shops is banned. We turn a bit of a blind eye (though you may get some looks for it) to eating/usage because of similar reasons I listed above, but those two bits are enforced, and are listed in our laws.
And I love too Be still, my indelible friend That love soon might end You are unbreaking And be known in its aching Though quaking Shown in this shaking Though crazy Lately of my wasteland, baby That's just wasteland, baby
From my understanding of this there must be a don't ask, don't tell policy because I have definitely seen Mhaldorians buy herbs and on occasion harvest. As a merchant, I have also sold moss to Mhaldorians. Harvesting not as much due to the fact that the forests try to murder them.
Also, side rave to Mhaldorians being the best people to sell to. They're not stingy, end up tipping me, and have the best conversation. 10/10 would sell to again.
If it's a thing, it's a new thing, and it sounds like a dumb thing.
Considering it was Sartan that enacted a while after alchemists were implemented and it is in our novice training help files to use minerals, it is not new.
Considering our relationship with the forests, nature, and Eleusis, it is not dumb.
I'm pretty sure even Ruth had trans'd Harvesting. Technically primes(minerals) are just as much a part of nature as herbs are. Gonna stop using those, too?
Herbs are and always have been taken from living things (formerly at the behest of Oakstone (may that org ever rot and fester in hell)). Minerals have never been governed by a Nature-based org.
I am retired and log into the forums maybe once every 2 months. It was a good 20 years, live your best lives, friends.
It makes more sense for Mhaldor to eat plants tbh. Destroying Nature one herb at a time. Hell you should eat like 5 herbs per aff if you're as committed as you say you are.

I used to follow Ruth around when she was Tyrannus to talk about ideology. I tried asking her to come to Eleusis. I used that whole argument about transmutation being part of nature too. She proceeded to laugh and extract the primes where we were, then told me she was killing any taint of nature with solvents later, twisting it to her uses. Hence, subjugation of nature. She definitely does not harvest...
When you mill inks, you have to MILL FOR <1-5> <colour>INK. If you have the right reagents, but in the wrong amounts, it will fail and all reagents are destroyed. So even though that was enough for 500 inks, the command is to mill for 5 (the maximum without artie mill), so the quantity of reagents is wrong and it fails. Bye bye reagents.

It's something you learn very quickly... I still remember my first time milling where I destroyed ~2 hrs of hunting for reagents, on top of another ~30,000 gold worth all in one go... Since then have had "inr all" as the first action of my milling alias, before it outrifts stuff.
LibraryFest begins! Now, to remind everyone who said they'd help me that they said they'd help me. Then to write a bunch of games and performances once they say they forgot and have other responsibilities. jk mostly I just wish people would buy my stuff. I set up a cart and everything!

Copy/pasted directly from HHELP MINERALS:
The so-called 'fruit of the earth' are plants grown by Nature, to serve
Nature, and further the pursuits of Nature.
Eleusis and its allies, the Divine of the Natural world, stand against
Mhaldor for they fear progress. They cling to out-moded ideologies,
ignoring the Strength that is found through civilization and the purge
wrought by the fog of the Master.
We do not accept their weakness, nor do we seek to enhance their futile
cause. Thus, do we shun the use of plants found via Harvesting and
instead use only minerals created via Synthesis. Mhaldorians pull the
primes necessary from the earth and we create we we need - much as the
Truths create within us impetus to grow and succeed.
Never should a Legate allow themselves to use plants, always should we
strive to use minerals where necessary. This is not a negotiable term.
Many minerals are sold within the Holy City. A list of the minerals are:
Ferrum A mineral to cleanse the blood.
Stannum Restore sanity with the stannum mineral.
Dolomite A milky white mineral.
Antimony Antimony will protect against hydropsy.
Bisemutum A mineral to quicken the mind.
Cuprum A mineral alloy of copper.
Magnesium A mineral to return movement to the muscles.
Calamine Block out sounds with the calamine mineral.
Malachite Ground malachite will raise an anti-weapon field.
Azurite Link with the realm of the Deathgod.
Plumbum A leaden mineral to restore mental health.
Realgar A smokable sulphurous mineral.
Arsenic A toxic mineral to induce blindness.
Gypsum Gypsum's physiological properties will prevent sleep.
Argentum A silver mineral to relieve mental ailments.
Calcite When reacted with water, calcite will surround you with an air
bubble.
Potash Heal your mind and body with potash.
Quicksilver Coat yourself in a thin layer of quicksilver.
Aurum Aurum will strengthen your body.
Quartz Special quartz crystals provide energy.
Cinnabar A mineral of sulphur and mercury.
HELP HEALING and HELP HEALING LIST will show you more detailed
information regarding what the minerals cure. TRADEWHO SYNTHESIS will
show you those who know the trade skill so you may, too, learn to
partake of minerals.
CURING USE TRANSMUTATION will ensure that your innate sense of healing
yourself will use minerals instead of plants.
In Strength, Legates - embrace Suffering wherever it may be found and
Oppress the enemies of Evil.
This scroll was kind of obscure. Not sure if it's copy/pasted into the
insidium, but I didn't see anything directing me towards it and read it
out of curiosity way later. I actually would have probably took
harvesting had Ailea not informed me during my interview when I asked if
herbs would suffice that it was banned to gather them. Still, eating
them seemed entirely optional until I read that scroll one day out of
curiosity and switched over to minerals.
So, regardless of who's side you're on here, it IS a rule, but it should be a mandated reading from the start which it is not at present, hence mishaps such as this. I've read thralls, aspirants, emissaries, and duelists and never seen that scroll refrenced once, so unless I missed it somehow --which is not beyond the realm of possibilities-- then you could make it to at least hr5 without ever having known this rule.

Played in Mhaldor for years, had zero idea that was a thing (used to use/sell herbs that I took from shops/sub houses all the time)

You are holding:
Riftables:
A group of 500 wyrm tongues, a group of 1000 pieces of buffalo horn, a group of 1000 piles of
fish scales, a group of 1000 lumps of red clay, and a group of 1000 patches of lumic moss.
send("outr 10 lumic~outr 10 redclay~outr 10 scales~outr 10 horn~outr 5 tongue")
send("put group clay in mill~put group lumic in mill~put group scales in mill~put group horn in mill~put group tongue in mill")

You have no lumic stored in the Rift.
You have no redclay stored in the Rift.

Lacking the rattle of a successful milling, you realise that you've done something wrong and spoiled
the batch, which you empty onto the ground in disgust.
