You know, I've been thinking about this situation and why it comes up and the differences and opinions, and an odd question dawned on me:
If you believe combat should not ever be restricted (aka, some of your skills taken away), do you also believe roleplay shouldn't be restricted?
I feel like we often punish various trespasses with the loss of roleplay opportunties, which includes being unable to speak with certain sections of the playerbase (i.e. "bad" Devotionists and enemy parties to use a more radical example), less trust in your own orgs, demotion from positions, and sometimes even outright restriction from speaking to certain individuals. These are just a few common examples, there's likely many more.
So if these examples are acceptable - preventing fun interactions that a roleplayer would genuinely feel the loss of - why is the loss of combative abilities for a limited amount of time (often for less time than the roleplay ones would be) seen as "unacceptable" to the point you'd just qq and not play?
I'm not choosing a particular side at the moment, I'm mostly just musing on why we hold the view of combat above the view of roleplay. Is is just because it's a point of revenue? Or maybe there a sense of entitlement when it comes to game mechanics? Or perhaps roleplayers just learn to deal with the punishments handed down because that's what is expected?
Or maybe, you feel they/the situation isn't the same thing at all?
It's an interesting train of thought.
Not sure I really understand the analogy. If someone made you incapable of engaging in any roleplay for 15 days, it would be equally poorly received, I think. But there's not really an equivalent. You can roleplay anytime. The criticism of TDF is that it makes combat impossible (by, for example, removing many classes' only means of killing someone). It's not something that just changes it. It's basically "no pk for 15 days."
Late to the thread, but muting is essentially the RP equivalent.
Muting is typically not a punishment doled out to RPers, though. It's on obnoxious people who may not, in fact, be role-playing.
From what I've seen and heard, most mutes are made on really bad trolls who aren't role-playing.
Reminds me of a guide for mmo's I read before (paraphrased):
Newbie: Someone new to the game who genuinely doesn't know and makes mistakes based off of ignorance. Once corrected they try to adhere to the rules the best they can. A delight to be had and can be quite cute.
Noob: A massive troll who is constantly trying to cause trouble and shout obscenities/slurrs/etc. They might know what the rules are but spit at them and ignore all attempts to control or modify their behavior. Should be taken out back and put down like old yeller.
You know, that one thing at that one place, with that one person.
I don't do much hunting, but today I tried to hunt some creatures I knew I should be able to handle. The problem is that I would miss nine times out of ten. My initial rage would fade away before I could add to it. It was maddening! Finally, I realized the problem: jabbing with a blackjack is quite ineffective. I forgot I'm no longer a bard. *facepalm*
Today I logged in and immediately had someone telling me that a newbie was killed for mudsexing, and then reported to their organisation for it.
The same person then asked me what is and isn't appropriate when a house member develops a romantic relationship with a person below them.
My response was that lots of people will put far too much thought into what is and isn't appropriate and that can apparently lead to killing newbies. It's a personal choice, I think, for an individual to decide whether they can navigate the issues that may arise.
My reflection is that my greatest regret in two centuries of leading Lupus' Order, admittedly a small organisation, was placing a ban on romantic relationships between Order and preOrder members. The intention had been to do away with popularity by association and any drama that could come from the most volatile human interaction.
Not going to go into the results here. I started to but ugh, gross. The short of it is if something is going to be a problem, it will become your business without your help.
Sir Tyamat Trismegistus, the Crux Shade has appointed you to the position of Minister of War. You are now leader of the army of Hashan.
Oh lord. We're all going to die.
Judging by your recent Hashan post, It looks like very few people will actually have the chance to die.
It's more than we had before and I had to argue my case for an hour to get that much. And that was before I was MoW and wasn't even expecting to take it over.
Judging from how he reacted when Saeva, myself, and 3 noobs raided against their sizeable force... well >.>
That's not particularly fair. I logged into the mess that someone else was
leading already frustrated and cranky from work and all I yelled was for you guys to gtfo. There weren't any tears and I neither called you guys names nor implied anything about you, like you guys did. Soooo yeah

I would love to, but we only have 3 people allowed to lead Raids. 2 of them are almost never on the same time as me and the other is almost universally AFK
Shouldn't need to be "allowed" to lead raids. Just lead, see who comes, have a good time, learn from it. If you want to raid, red tape should not be the thing preventing that from happening

Explain that to the people in charge of Hashan. I'm doing my best to mitigate it by making sure that there is always someone around to do it, but we have red tape.

Robes of the Magi, -blah-, a pink flannel pajama shirt with white bunnies, pink flannel pajama trousers with white bunnies, an adorable pair of fuzzy bunny slippers, Gauntlets of the Aldar, a Hood of the Sphinx, a mask of lifevision, an Aldar Diadem, a Collar of Agatheis, and a portrait locket of Pandora.

I've been dressing him like that for years, heh. He has a wooden rabbit amulet to go with it, too. Eventually I may craft him a custom bunny outfit, though. The best part is his text-wife has an adorable bunny for a pet, but she hates bunnies.

Hashan's getting relevant. If leaders are getting in the way with bullshit terms about "you need to be approved to lead raids", then you need to get rid of those leaders, because it's unhealthy for the city to have that mentality, and makes it less fun for those who want to experience the martial side of Hashan. Or, as MoW, and collective combatants, say "fuck you, we're not red taping this shit". They can either capitulate to that, or throw out every combatant... I'll hope that they're not dumb enough to do the latter. If they are.. fucking replace them, holy shit
@Aegoth is actually right (for once). Anyone who's saying you need permission to lead a raid is quite literally stunting the growth of potential future raid leaders and combatants in general.
