Haven't taken one out to try yet, but from what I can tell from descriptions and such it works as long as it's in your inventory. I'm not sure how multiple of them will stack, and whether holding two will cause them both to count down. If they do, you could probably put one in your pack, and once the first runs out pull out the next.

Hahaha. I wasn't sure if shield would stop it, and I figured moving rooms might because area was mentioned.
