Just wanted to post some thoughts on Sentinel in its current state following the changes which were necessitated by the y852 games.

Petrify

Petrify strat is far too powerful with lemming/vertigo in its current state.

Previously, your choices for 2 passive pets were:

- goldenseal cover aff + no fly (butterfly/lemming)

- petrify aff + no fly (raven/lemming)

- petrify aff + goldenseal cover aff (raven / butterfly)

Depending on the strat you were pushing and the target's affliction state, different choices were valuable in different ways. E.g. if going for petrify, raven was necessary and a choice would be made between butterfly and lemming based on whether you were indoors, the target's propensity for flying etc.

There was also a cost in changing between strats, as pets are passive when summoned and cant be ordered to attack until the next balance.

The current state is:

- goldenseal cover aff + petrify aff + no fly (butterfly/lemming) is optimal in all situations except where damage is being pushed on a prone/locked opponent.

Regardless of the strat you're pushing (lock, limb prep, damaging aff stack, petrify), assuming you're using doublestrike to contribute aff pressure, there is now no variation in optimal pet selection.

Suggested fix: Remove vertigo from list of petrify affs, add paranoia to list of petrify affs.

Wrench

I dont understand the rationale behind the most recent change, but must admit I never saw the single leg wrench kill that I think(?) gave rise to it.

The change (extended wrench balance) has stopped sentinels being able to wrench twice on a target who was impaled when they had 2 damaged legs. Although the writhe time is still extended, it is no longer enough to allow 2 wrenches. This is a retrograde change as breaking x/leg/leg -> impale/wrench/wrench -> more rubbish -> dismember was a useful damage strategy against people who would focus on parrying head and left both legs open. This strategy is no longer viable.

Even if the second wrench were possible, the additional time for 2xwrench gives the target more time to squeeze another sip/moss in before the eventual rattle in the dismember chain.

Suggested fix: Increase the additional writhe time for impale with 2 broken legs so that impale + 2xwrench can be accommodated. Shorten the balance of ensnare by 2xchange to wrench so that the total time from impale -> rattle is unchanged.

I am a sentinel and I hunt with spear and shield. I've been eyeing a shield of absorption. Before I buy it, I want to know if using a shield is the right thing to do. I saw someone else (runewarden?) hunting with a battleaxe in each hand and was impressed. Can I do something like that? Or is it a class skill?

Also, I've heard some reference to "sentinels and their hand axes". I'm guessing that's player combat? I tried a hand axe for hunting and I was pitiful. Of course I haven't learned my skirmishing skills past thrust (like throwing) so maybe that was the problem?? Or is it that hunting is completely different that combat? The little I've tried combat maul worked much better than thrust, but for hunting the reverse is true.

So should I be hunting like I have been? Or with some combination of two weapons?

And of less importance, what about combat?

Earlier, Caelan asked me to help him test his observation that his entourage hit enemies faster if he gives them orders before the enemy enters the room. This raised interesting questions about how the time intervals between attacks is distributed, and I gathered some data on the time interval between attacks with Caelan's help.

Fox:

For the first animal we tested, the distribution is approximately bell-shaped (but not normal; the tails are too heavy). The sample mean was 7.485 seconds (we can reasonably assume the true mean to be 7.5) and the standard deviation was 0.385 seconds.

Raven:

A cursory examination of the data showed that it was heavily skewed (this was confirmed with a boxplot). Suspecting the time interval to be exponentially distributed, I fitted it with the exponential model and 'lo and behold, the quantiles corresponded quite well with the theoretical ones (see raven_qqplot.jpeg). There is some squiggliness that I assume to be due to the server running in ticks, and in my opinion this accounts for the low p-value from the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test.

The rate constant was estimated to be 0.101/sec, which corresponds to 9.932 seconds expected between attacks.

Butterfly:

The attack time intervals was exponential, with a lower rate than the raven. Rate constant was estimated to be 0.077/sec, corresponding to a mean time between attacks of 13.008 seconds.

Discussion:

The fox attacks consistently around once every 7.5 seconds. Raven and butterfly attack at around once ever 10 seconds and once every 13 seconds, respectively; the distributions of the latter two are memory-less, so knowing it's x seconds since last attack tells you nothing about how long you likely have to wait before the next attack. Consequently, you can pre-attack with the fox, but not with raven and butterfly.

Criticisms, comments, and questions are welcome.

=================================

Attached: relevant plots and R script (ent_passive.txt).

Hello. First post here. I've done some research through the forums on some basic stuff for Sentinels but I had a few questions and I just wanted to make sure my information was up to date because of how old some of the posts were.

1) what stats should I be looking for Sentinel?

I saw some posts about skullbash being % based damage that didn't scale of strength to well and that I should be focusing on +con more than anything. Is this true for PvP and hunting? Does our thrust scale off stats or weapon damage?

2) I am going to be tri trans eventually and I am Dec going to trans out survival. Those seem like the 4 major skill sets for basic combat. Should I work on weaponry next or is there another skill set that would benefit me better for hunting and pvp?

3) I plan on buying some artifacts but I am only going to have about 800cr to do so. Should I just buy the SpA and be done with it or are there other artifacts that would benefit me for for the price?

I was maybe thinking a +con belt or even a sip ring or the % health and mana one but I was unsure the cost/benefit ratio for my credits. Should I just look at getting the lol 1 spear and axe instead of the defensive argues since I plan on becoming heavily involved in PvP?

Any and all opinions would be helpful in making my decision. Thank you

I just came back from a several year break, and last time I played sent seriously was right before/after axe stun got deleted. Back then the class was enormously fun, because your main attack being at ~1 second in speed while doing damage, afflictions, and limb damage allowed for a ton of different routes to take.

Now, sent's a lot more straight-forward. Worst of all, it's incredibly SLOW. Axing is like 1.8 seconds or something, and the doublethrust family of attacks are all just under 3 seconds with default weapons. This already takes out a lot of the appeal of the class, but it's still afflictions + limb damage so I can deal.

What I'm wondering is how viable the class even is. I only care about top tier combat since that's what's always mattered to me. The affliction rate is actually really good if you're including the animals, but the afflictions you can give are really limited. Not being able to pair some key affs together makes the speed a lot less useful, and the low attack speed makes limb breaking a lot less powerful than it was before, too. Arties being mandatory to being faster when before you could just get a good forged axe is a huge turn-off too.

The point: Is sentinel worth sticking with, especially without arties? I mean, I could get arties eventually, but I don't want to have to get them. What makes a class for me is flexibility to be creative with its offense, utility/mobility, ability to hunt people who aren't going to try and stick around for mark contracts, group skirmishing power, and meaningful raid contribution rather than standing around waiting while everyone else does the work. The utility is still there, but I'm not sold on the others.

Obviously I don't really need anyone to feed me strategies since I can do that on my own, but I'd rather not spend a dozen hours figuring out the new class and coding an offense only to conclude I should just switch class to something that better suits my needs. I'm considering sylvan as an alternative, but I don't know much about their state after their rework, either. They never really had the mobility/utility/hunting power I liked back then. I also considered just going back serp, but I've already done that and slightly prefer classes that can do limb damage these days.

Hey everyone,
I noticed all the previous topics for Sentinels are old, so I wanted to make a new topic for sentinels for everyone to discuss the new skill sets for Sentinels, as well as any other questions that may pop up.

I'll start off with what Sentinels can use for hunting.

***- Hunting -***
We Sentinels have a few abilities we can use for hunting. I will list them below.

- Returning -
Works on/against: Adventurers and denizens
Cooldown: Balance cost varies based on weapon speed

Details: This ability will allow your axe to return to your hand when thrown. It

can target adventurers and denizens in room, but only adventurers in
line of sight.

**(I actually prefer to use Returning when hunting due to the attack speed of the throwing axe. Being the fastest hunting skill we have, I feel much safer using it due to the fact I'm able to hit and run ALOT quicker if needed. Also, the extra attacks per minute lead to more critical hits. My balance recovery for Returning is currently 1.6 seconds with Axe of Gaian Fury)

- Thrust -

Works on/against: Adventurers and denizens

Cooldown: Balance cost varies based on weapon speed

Details: This is a basic thrust with a spear or trident.

**(This attack is slightly slower than Returning, however in turn does slightly more damage. Also, it's slightly weaker than Maul, but in turn quicker. I currently get a 2.4 second balance recovery with a forged spear.)

- Maul -

Works on/against: Adventurers and denizens

Cooldown: 3.25 seconds of balance

Details: Rend your victim with your claws and teeth.

**(This is going to be your slowest, but strongest hunting ability. I prefer faster movements so I tend to stay away from Maul. However, More damage means that if you do land a critical strike, it's that much sweeter. Balance recovery is stated above.)

Hunting with a Sentinel is all about personal preference. I hope this helps out a bit with Hunting attacks.

Feel free to add more Sentinel information below, or ask questions. I'll try to answer.

I'm currently new to the Sentinel Class. I'd like to learn more about sentinel combat strategies. I know this should be asked in my house but I want other opinions as well. During my fights, I seem to always be lost on to actually kill them. As an example, I can prep 3 limbs then I dont know what's next...

Currently, I'm a CON spec'd rajamala but planning to go for STR spec'd as Xoran for PVP.

Appreciate everyone's response.
