And if so, what kinds of items are those? Quest items, maybe?...
Just to be clear, I am not asking for anyone’s favorite hunting spots! I simply want to know what to look out for to find my own Karma hunting areas/hubs.

Please help a newbie out!

Ok banging my head against the wall on this one. Occultist got changed in a major way. From what I can tell the feel of occie is mostly the same. The game plan is still to stack physical afflictions into mental afflictions for an enlighten. At the most basic of levels that is what you still do.

To achieve this we have a lot of new tools as well as some fixes and actual uses for old ones. Things that stick out to me the most is casual access to paralysis as a staple affliction. Asthma and slickness access to back it up and paralysis access from an entity once asthma and addiction are present. Passive afflictions and hinder from up to four entities. Minions giving afflictions in a active way allows for some clever combos.

As of right now my prevailing theory for a basic enlighten kill path is to use instills for paralyses and stick asthma and addiction. Our affliction speed is such that this is trivial for occie to accomplish. Once we have done this then we can use entities to stick paralysis for us and use our own skills to throw tarots and giver a wider selection of afflictions. Namely whispering madness. Since occie lacks impatience and no easy access to anorexia whispering madness seems to be how we are expected to stick any amount of mentals. We need either five mentals or four mentals and whispering madness which for the purpose of this post I will just count as a mental. Whispering madness and addiction are two mentals that are unique in that they both count for enlighten and both can not be focused. So that just leaves three mentals that can be focused having to be present to achieve enlighten. Whispering madness only has a chance to re give a random mental once one is cured via focus. As far as I know this cant be anorexia. Sycohphant will double focus balance after the next focus attempt. It requires you to give up some affliction pressure to use but can be used in advance of a strategy. However there is nothing to stop you from just focusing before a mental is applied. So that means we have to use it close to when we actually would need it to be effective.

Firelord is the other tool we can use to really stick in a burst of mental afflictions. It however does have it's drawn backs. You can convert up to four random physical afflictions to a set mental affliction associated with that physical.

Asthma becomes recklessness.

Paralysis becomes dementia.

Slickness becomes stupidity.

Haemophilia becomes claustrophobia.

Clumsiness becomes shyness.

Healthleech becomes agoraphobia.

Sensitivity becomes paranoia.

Darkshade becomes confusion.

Note that the firelord will convert no more than four afflictions at a

time.

Right off the bat it is obvious that if asthma is converted we will have to give paralysis via instill again until it and addiction are both present. However in theory this shouldnt be a problem because when whispering madness and addiction are present we should only need three of these mentals to enlighten. So the idea is that we use our entity balance to burst cure 4 physical afflictions and our EQBAL to enlighten off of that.

This is easier said than done it seems. Occultist unlike other affliction classes does not double inflict. What I mean is that unlike serpent who can give two afflictions in a single line using balance we combine two balances together instead. So think more bard than serpent. This often requires Occultist to slow down and wait until we get both balances back at the same time. In most cases entity balance is slightly slower than EQBAL and these two do not always line up together well. So occie can use enity balance when off of EQBAL but as far as I know has no way to queue both up to be fired at the same time.

What this adds up to is when you are in a situation where you have whispering madness and addiction and 4 physical afflictions you will most of the time reagain EQ back first and then about .2 to .6 of a second later regain entity balance. You need entity balance to burst mentals with firelord and EQBAL to seal the deal with enlighten in that order. If you manually wait then they will often cure something important right before you fire off the combo. Since firelord has a hard cap of 4 physical to convert you can not counter this with more physical afflictions. If you could burst with five then it would be trivial.

This leads me to believe that we are meant to use whispering madness and some mentals to pressure focus balance before this point. Currently I am at a loss of how to achieve this in a semi consistent way. If whipseringmadness always gave another mental when you focused under it that would be much easier to use. However it does not so I expect I am missing something that the devs intended occultist to use. We have devilmark and moon card from tarot for some possible burst mentals but its pretty RNG in what happens.

Does anyone have and ideas about how to go about this? Is there something I am missing. A different route you can think or a tool I am not using?

Leth's a bit more immediately debilitating than a lot of the other affs, but any time I double up on it, I'm going to be losing affliction pressure, and the chance is usually going to be 50/50, and eventually 33/67. If I instead pick any other instill that I know they don't have, I can guarantee that I'm at least maintaining affs, and I can just avoid picking one that bloodleech hit. This gets me to cadmus faster, but I'm fully committed to pretty much ignoring hindering their offense.

How big a deal is lethargy? Especially since I ideally am trying to rush my kill in under 30s? I currently don't chance the 50/50, but if it's 33/67 I'll usually go for instilling it because of better odds, or if I'm most of the way through my instills and hence it's more likely that it was cured at some point - though by this point I can probably already cadmus, or pick a 100% aff and cadmus.
Will this reroll new mutations on next death?

It says it's ~2:1 for good vs. bad mutations, is there any weighting within that spectrum for more relevant boosts, like +int vs. +str?

Do deaths in arenas cause you to lose mutations or trigger transmog?

The underlying question I suppose is if it's just a bonus burst or if it's worth trying to get some juicy buffs.

Occultist raid utility is just far too high. I swear it is like in every raid i've been in I hear the words "Do they have an occie?". Why should one class inspire so much fear and have so much leverage over the out-come of a fight? Before the changes and events, this was not as much an issue, but now with the class being stripped from all but two organizations, it has become nothing but a pain. No other class has this much to its advantage. Let's consider the utility that comes with the class:

Star tarot: Ability to throw meteors at anyone in the area, destroying shields and causing damage. A Destroyed shield gives an advantage to their doppleganger to throw tarot/use warp.

Astralform: Instantly gives the Occultist invulnerability and freedom of movement. Willpower drain is somewhat managable (unlike Blackwind which is 2k willpower per drain). Can be used multiple times to escape bad situations and reposition self in a raid to continue with assault. Has only 2 known counters, Druid Flash and Priest Cleansing, both of which are/have become org specific abilities.

Chaosrays: Strikes all in the room with 1 of 7 effects (one being damage), tends to be useful rather than detriment. Utilized by occultists when in a bad situation to cause group damage.

Transmogrify: When an occultist has finally been pinned down and slain, they will not in fact die but rise up with full health and mana. This process is usually instantly followed up by Astral-form (or a Duanathara) for a quick escape, having thwarted a death.

Doppleganger warp: Ability to send Doppleganger to anyone in the area and warp them. Warp damage is equivalent to your own damage via intelligence stat. If it is slain, they need not fret, they still have the ability to summon several more via their pact.

Dopple + Hangedman: Ability to send Doppleganger to anyone in the area and ensnare them, stopping any running.

Dopple + Aeon: Ability to send Doppleganger to anyone in the area and curse them with Aeon. If there are 2 occultists in the group then it can be synchronized for both to toss their aeon tarot at the right time to cancel speed buff and give the aeon curse. Death is usually assured after this point.

Chaos Storm: Can be sent to anyone in the area to cause damage and afflict.

Xenophage: Can be utilized to instantly teleport the occultist from their location to the chaos plane, must have full health and mana. Im not really sure of the purpose of this ability but meh.

Golgotha Pit: A finally, the coup de grace. The monarch ability that brings tears to so many. The scary story no child wants to hear before bed. This ability is pretty much a "delete all" button. If you want to remove enemies in a location or a fight is going bad or you want to remove defenders, just Pit. They will be transported to Golgotha's pit and away from the location, those not being strong enough dying to the creatures there.

And here we are. A class that literally got all the juicy and flavored abilities while the others stare in starvation. I think the class's raid mechanic dominance needs to be toned down exceptionally, it is just giving too much of an unfair advantage. I know there has been talk of a ranged combat overhaul but I am not sure this can wait for that whole edition to come. Also to those that will mention "Just use an orb sigil", please remember that that really doesnt help the situation much as they can just summon another minion and you would be throwing yourself off-balance, thus a sitting duck for other assaults.
