Cyrene specific class tree?

  • Soooooooo since this is sort of one of my favorite mini hobbies, i'll just toss this out there.

I enjoy making up skill concepts and once thought of one for Cyrene. It was based on bard where they would drop swashbuckling to take up an artistic pursuit which had in it both explosive flavor and 'explosive' power.

The idea was that Cyrene, being a center of artistic pursuit and passion would undergo disaster (as recently happened). Because of this, the population would be reduced and the remnants scarred, taking a new outlook on life. With such heavy loss, the artists and muses decide to take up their talents in a more military fashion to ensure the safety of their people while also expressing their creative outlook. No longer merely to enjoy the fantasies of their designs, they would bring their designs to 'perfect' the world around them into a 'better place'. Their art is an expression of beauty, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

The skill would utilize: Clay, inks, paper.

With paper they would create a form of magical origami which can be used to send out 'creations' for unique abilities, like a bird to attack a target in the air.

The clay could be crafted into unique items and concepts, perfected into 'explosive' clay later

The inks could be used with colors to cause effects or draw illustrations upon paper and bring them to life.

Some of this inspiration is from some of my favorite anime abilities (suffer Mathonwy), examples below:

  • So first, bringing this over from the "what happened to you today" thread:
    Synthus said:
I mean... Cyrene has the Virtuosi, so it might make sense to adopt a new skill tree onto Bard... While I'd love to see something done with dirges or the souls of the lost, I think that's gonna be a hard sale thematically...

With Neraeos as our patron, what about Shanties to replace Harmonics?

That, or if we want to go with the other official/unofficial patron of Phaestus, we could have Chanting, which is more songs akin to Tolkien dwarves?
"Far over, the snowy Vashnars high... To Azdun deep and Mhojave dry..."
After a lot of thought, I realize that the only "factional" tie that Cyrene really has is to the wyrms of the lake, so most of my ideas after those first ones incorporated them more heavily.

I know knights already have a lot of love with the weaponmastery specialisations, but what about shifting Chivalry around to Vengeance?

Less "Noble" or "Stalwart" options, more "I'm going to rip your throat out" options. Swap the falcon out for a wyrm hatchling which can be empowered in a variety of ways tied in directly to Runelore. Sketching a hugalaz on it makes it bite icy and do more damage, isaz makes it knock enemies off balance occasionally, and Pithakhan does it's usual drain mana, but it returns a portion to you. I think fehu as a sleep on hit is a cool idea but it would be a poor idea to implement from a mechanical standpoint.

Beyond that, maybe give bard a spear, a wyrm pet instead of a songbird, shift some songs to more like dirges and chants, and let them summon their inner Vashnarian dragoon? I mean, that makes a lot more sense than trying to shoehorn it into knight thematically, but with all the scattershot work to make it happen, it might as well be a new class at that point. That being said though, bards can already leap high, these "dragoons" would have trained in the mountains so nothing new there, and there's a decent bit of lore possibility that could explain it. A cooperative venture between the Shield and numerous Cyrenean citizens led to the adoption of unorthodox battle tactics in an effort to make sure the Tsol'teth massacre never happened again.

"Dragoon" wouldn't be able to be used as the name though... Hrm... Wyrmcaller?

Not going to lie.. I've always been uninterested in bards. Being able to scrawl creations and explosives into existence like so.. would definitely make me consider it.

    Sounds similar to Imperian Bards.

I'd be more interested in seeing a Runewarden variation where Chivalry gets replaced with something like Wyrmriding (but draconic icewyrms instead of the lake wyrms). Would largely be a bulwark type class, focusing on tanking and support utility, such as smashing walls, freezing ground and opponents, summoning hail storms, stomping to throw opponents off balance or gusting with wings to prone, as well as perhaps the ability to dive bomb outdoor locations, slamming into the ground and hurling people from the room indiscriminately. Riders would be restricted to use of a spear, lance, or trident while mounted as part of the skillset, giving them abilities such as Impale (without disembowl, but maybe a variation of it where the rider drags the corpse while pinned), but could otherwise employ Weaponmastery when dismounted.

Kinda picturing small, bulky wyrms with powerful wings capable of flight, but mainly used in the intent of heavy cavalry. Something like this:

Each rider would have a special bond with their wyrm, just like with falcons, and would be responsible for seeing it properly taken care of less they lose it. Could be a bit of a bonding ritual that takes inspiration from Runic empowering where the rider has to perform a question to secure an egg (kind of like Blademasters getting their swords made), then hatch and raise the wyrmling and train it to adulthood.

I'm not sure if this concept already exists in other IRE games, as I've not played them, but there is a heavy reference to this sort of thing in a lot of fantasy settings, so I wouldn't be surprised.

Ok, everything I just read about that sounds awesome and would fit well with Cyrene. I don't hate it. Yes please.

So basically everyone is on an Imperian vibe? :D

Seriously though, I love the "sketch comes to life" and the "wyrmrider" ideas. I guess that's why they're an actual thing, because they're good ideas! The wyrms have a better RP explanation though.
  • Give the power of Puns to Cyrenian jesters. Need area effect on some of the higher ones for true damage.
  • Hmm with dragon being a main symbol for Cyrene, I wish Runewarden could branch off to where instead of a falcon, we could get a mini dragon and polearm so we could play as a Dragoon. daydream ... off to play FF for a bit of dragoon  =) love the ideas you all came up with and wouldn't mind seeing something like them down the road.

That would be @Telendrieth. We had a lengthy discussion the other day about all the implements Hycanthus could possibly introduce into Cyrene for weaponry. Constructed satchels that have afflictions based upon the components made, various firearm types, etc. I think we might have got a little excessive, but damn if I don't want a cannoneer class now.
  • Omg a gunslinger class I would get in a half second.  Quarter second.  Take my money please.
Deucalion says, "Torinn is quite nice."
  • Is Hycanthus an actual cyrene loyal now or just sleeping on the couch though?

You go tell him he's not allowed to be the self-proclaimed saviour of Cyrene.

Let me put on my lab goggles first.

Oh yes! I've pondered designs with a pygmy drake long ago so they are like tiny cousins/offshoots of the giant drake that carries you to the top of the pantheon. Came up with a letter design with pygmy drake motif, even a pygmy drake delivering letters as the Cyrene mail carrier way back but that idea sadly didn't win. Still love it though, very symbollic of Cyrene  :3

Gosh I'm loving all these ideas people are sharing. Please keep them coming  <3

Just pondering some more, there is a number of classes that Cyrene accepts and would only be fair that they might all recieve a little special something.  Jesters might, instead of that inflatable giraffe balloon, can be a Cyrenian drake.

That's just one thought that came to me a few moments ago, need more  :)

Changing every class to have a special city-related flair seems to defeat the purpose of a city specific class for Cyrene. Not to mention it would be a huge undertaking, as if you offer it for one city you'd have to offer for all the others.

  • True enough, was trying to include them all and entertain the thought, it's just fun.

Bah! Play Legend of Dragoon for a bit of dragoon.

  • I'm just saying.. riflemen. Mix in some demolition charges and just... yes. Achaea has been growing in these areas for years, and it makes a lot of sense in the current atmosphere.

Honestly, I'd much rather have a wyrm mount and ability like Wyrm Riding that Imperian has than rifles. That being said, since Imperian already has it, I'm sure Achaea never will.
