Spacing ruler for journals, etc.

TalamondTalamond Atop his throne of books
I've shared this with a few people and figure there might be a couple more who could use it.

This is my crude "ruler" for gauging where the max character limit falls, as well as giving me a way to accurately center text (using a monospace font, of course):

-4321-987654321-987654321-987654321==123456789-123456789-123456789-1234-

Feel free to share your own methods and other formatting tricks.

    Now with halves, thirds, and quarters:

    <-321-987654321-987654321-987654321==123456789-123456789-123456789-123->
    <-54321-987654321==123456789-12345-><-54321-987654321==123456789-12345->
    <-987654321==123456789-><-987654321==123456789-><-987654321==123456789->
    <-654321==123456-><-654321==123456-><-654321==123456-><-654321==123456->

  • If you use a text editor (e.g. Sublime), you can select text, hit CTRL+J, and have the entire text formatted into being one paragraph. Very useful if you want to avoid line breaks where you don't want them. (@Daeir shared this a while ago, so thanks are due to him!)
  • I use Notepad+

    Notepad++ over here.

    You can sort of get away with Google Docs if you set the font to Courier New (size 11), bring the right margin down to 0.9 in (2.29 cm), and disable smart quotes.

    Xaden, Atalkez, Solnir... I wonder if there's a common thread among you three. =)

    Literally today, I learned that in Notepad++ you can do column selection and manipulation by holding alt.
    Edit: In Sublime it's ctrl + alt, but I had to disable the Intel graphics hotkeys.

  • I use Atom or just plain Notepad for all my stuff.

    I suppose with me around, there has to be a tier beneath "gorgeous".

    Thanks to @Daeir, I think I'm sold on Sublime. Here's my Achaea stuff settings:

    "rulers": [72],
    "word_wrap": true,
    "wrap_width": 73,
    "font_face": "Courier New",
    "font_size": 9,
    "translate_tabs_to_spaces": true,
    "auto_indent": false,
    "draw_indent_guides": false,
    "indent_subsequent_lines": false
  • If anyone wants to give me $80 for sublime I'll use it :D

  • @aralaya Isn't it free? I know I didn't pay for it but I might be naughty.
  • Also on 3.3+ (I believe) you can set your Mudlet and sublime text themes to be the same. Which is just nice.
  • @Accipiter one I found is $80 :

  • I use Notepad++ to actually write my stuff in, also use it for my html/JavaScript/c++ code

    @Aralaya Pretty sure it is like WinRAR, you can buy it if you like but no one ever does.

    Sublime Text may be downloaded and evaluated for free, however a license must be purchased for continued use. There is currently no enforced time limit for the evaluation.

  • JonathinJonathin Retired in a hole.
    I just use the mudlet editor and then rage and cuss when I hit the submit button and find out that I was disconnected.
    I am retired and log into the forums maybe once every 2 months. It was a good 20 years, live your best lives, friends.

    Side note: Thanks for the suggestion on sublime. I've just been using standard notepad for editing.
