Returning player needs some help/advice

AzjopasAzjopas Member Posts: 9
Hi guys,

I haven't been in the realms of Sapience for a good ~10 RL years. I've missed a lot and a lot has changed, but I'm just getting back into the world now. I'm looking for a bit of advice concerning a few things:

1. Good class for pvp -- I'm currently a tri-trans monk. I've got enough lessons/credits to switch classes, but not enough to start investing in artifacts. Keeping that in mind, I'm looking for opinions on a good (non artie) pvp class - specifically either Alchemist, Shaman or Runewarden.

2. Bashing/hunting -- As a monk I'm having trouble with bashing. I'm assuming this is due to being a mhun and only wearing leather armour, but I'm taking way too much damage from mobs. I am using my battlerage, but I feel like I'm doing something wrong that I'm not bashing very well.

I used to use an old program called Zmud for my scripting, but I've got mudlet and svof running properly, so I think I'm ok on that front for now.

Monk is terrible at bashing but great at pvp.

From your list, Runewarden is the best basher, followed by Alchemist. For pvp, I'd say without arties they're both pretty good, but alchemist is much less arty dependent.

I keep hearing that monk is no where near as good as it used to be for bashing, and that there are better classes to choose for this. Considering the list of classes you provided, runie might be a good option for you. Fullplate plus runes is great. There are pros and cons to each knight spec, so you'll want to get some advice from someone who plays runie as a combatant and hunter as to what might work best for you... whether that be dual cutting, dual blunt, two-hander, or sword and board. Seems runie is the most popular class right now, but with good reason! I hear a lot of good things about it and the various specs.

As for shaman, you'd probably end up wanting to code something to handle the various spiritlore abilities based on whether you were hunting or fighting, and which class you are fighting. It can be a little complex, with different set ups for different scenarios. If you preferred zmud and are still learning lua, shaman might not be the class for you unless there's a free script out there to handle spiritlore for you. I stopped using my shaman stuff, so I am not sure what's available for it anymore.

I've heard lots of good things about alchemist, but have zero experience with the class, so hopefully someone else can give you some detailed information on that one.
What doesn't kill you gives you exp.

Runewarden snb pretty great all around.

My site will remain up, but will not be maintained. The repository will continue to have scripts added to it if I decide to play another game. Maybe I'll see you around in Starmourn!

Yeah I hear SnB is really great, but Wessux has been pretty happy after switching to two-hander.

I should also add - I've got trans weaponry, which is partly why I'm leaning towards RuneWarden, but maybe it would be possible to add a shortsword and some jabs to an alchemist/shaman combat rotation?

There really wouldn't be any point to adding a weapon to shaman. You can already wield SoA and a doll at the same time and you can mangle easier with soulrend than you would with a weapon. On top of that, you can curse faster when you've got them aeoned (via vodun) than you could ever do it through evenoming. You'd be better off using weaponry for behead if you feel like mixing it up.

A shortsword, in particular, is also horrendously slow (it's purely a newbie weapon); you could probably swiftcurse three times in the balance of a single jab.

Well thanks for the advice. I'm sitting at just over ~3000k hp at lvl 77, which seems comically low. How about specialisations / traits? I was thinking nimble / +con for survivability. I'm thinking probably Sword & Shield Runie then, at least until I can bash my way up. Is the damage reduction of a shield really that powerful compare to the other specs though?

I've got to read some combat logs or something to see which class looks more fun in terms of pvp. I know shaman has a whole bag of new tricks with binding spirits that enhance their curses. Meanwhile the alchemist can truewrack and temper a humour PLUS use their homunculus pet. Unfortunately a lot of the sub-forums here seem like they haven't been posted in for months...

Also - I heard a rumour from someone in-game that there's a nerf coming for knights and/or just runewardens, as the dev's are trying to discourage quite so many people from playing the class. Any thoughts?

Just some balancing to make sure that classes are on a relatively even keel when it comes to bashing.
