All of my characters are drastically different in design, but they all share certain Character traits. For example, all of my alts are classist/houseist (believe that you can only learn to be the best of your class in a House where that class originated). Would you consider this a roleplaying problem, or do you think that it's' trivial.
Also, do you have any character traits that are consistent between your main and alts?
Every one of my characters, I try to take one aspect of me and interject it into them, then make it sort of a central theme. I'm a child at heart, I like to play kid games and act silly occasionally, so I took that and made it sort of a central theme for Boz starting out (hence the CIJ). Over time, he changed around a bit, and I let that happen. My alts differ greatly, mostly because being the same thing over and over gets boring, so I try to start with a new template every time. 1 character "theme", 1 character flaw and 1 thing the character is good about. I don't like playing the perfect guy, the guy who is always right, or any of that. If there's no flaw, no side that makes 'em realistic, it gets too fairytale-ish.
