I've been meaning to switch clients for awhile because Nexus is just so.. slow. I was wondering which one is better, Zmud or MUSH?
I know most people use Zmud but you have to pay for it(ugh) and I heard that it's actually slower than MUSH, which is free.
Like, which one is prettier/handier/better for combat?
Thanks!

zMUD: prettier
MUSHclient: better
Handier depends on your definition.

Alrighty, thanks! Is MUSH prettier than Nexus though? Like, I would prefer Vista over Linux any day.

That depends on your preferences. I don't like Nexus much. It feels sort of bloated, and I don't like having anything to the left of the text output. MUSH is simpler, and you can customise it to some extent. I didn't like the appearance of MUSH either when I tried it a few years ago, though.

Nexus is prettier than MUSH or zMUD. zMUD is prettier than MUSH. MUSH has miniwindows, which let you do a lot. But in general, they're not for the faint of heart. It's probably the most complex scripting I've done.

Miniwindows can really prettify MUSHclient. Though, if you want anything like Nexus's smooth graphical GUI, you'd need actual images, and either some experience scripting or an expert to help you out.
I have so many project ideas, and a widget-like system for GUI elements is one of them. One at a time though

I bring my laptop to boring lectures all the time so I could probably learn to script when the Economics professor is being especially boring but umm, how hard is it anyway? I'm horrible at scripting and I'll be buying Vadi's, so I'll probably just need to know how to make aliases. Hmm.

I have very little experience with MUSHclient, but it shouldn't be too difficult if you really want to learn. It's much more complex than zMUD, and especially Nexus.

Basic scripting really isn't that hard. If you understand basic concepts like variables (being places to store data), functions (being pre-written blocks of code you can run repeatedly), and control statements like if-else ("if I have balance, punch the rat, otherwise don't") and while ("as long as the rat is alive, punch it"), you should have no problem.
Of course, it's still a fairly complex affair. It's just not as hard to learn as you might think. Give me a poke in PMs (or on AIM, see my profile) if you have any MUSH/scripting-related questions.

Get MUSH, join the clan, and get Soludra to hold your hand as you make your first aliases/triggers/macros. Then use what he helped you make as references for future things you want to make.

I've never used MUSH myself, but just to throw it out there, there are ways to get around paying for zMUD.

MUSH is abit on the ugly side
I think I'm going to use Zmud.

Oh my god what resolution do you use? That's larger than my desktop screen! (EDIT: Actually, it might just be because I'm on my laptop right now. On inspection it seems you use the same resolution I do on my desktop. It just looks big on this screen. XD)
...also, you play a text game. I didn't think graphics would be of the highest priority. XD Like I posted before, if you want to prettify it, find a good scripter and a graphic artist to help you. Trevize worked with someone else on these forums to build his graphical Nexus-style compass and gauges, which turned out quite well (and I use them).

You know, you can change the layout/placement of things in MUSH too...
And with mini windows now in MUSH, you can also make some fancy GUI stuff....
Here's a few old shots

It doesn't HAVE to be ugly

Can I get an invite to the MUSH clan?

That, sir, is called power. If there's too many buttons for your tastes though, you can go to the View menu and remove some of the hotbars. I got rid of the main one (with File/Open/etc) myself just to make it less cluttered.
And yes, you can get an invite. Poke me (or anyone on CLANHELP MUSH for that matter) in-game.

Seriously, just use MUSH if it's really that big of a deal to pay for zmud. It's not really all that confusing. And just think, you can learn a real scripting language that has applications outside of achaea.

Dude, I totally know what you mean. I was stuck looking at MUSH for an hour yesterday trying to figure out where to start when it's just a blank template.

Help files are great resources. Really! Look up trevize's regexp tutorial, learn how to make triggers that match different things.
Then make a trigger (or alias). You don't need to worry about the settings unless you want to do something complex.

Too many MUSH newcomers and not enough active contributors to go around.

We need to get some decent tutorials written or something.

I just started learning mush as well, I found Trevize's health sipper (http://moonflair.com/autosipper) a big help and then I've asked Trevize/Soludra for pointers whenever I get stuck
Lua's pretty simple when first you get it, but it's getting it in the first round that's the problem
