Full Version: Has Anyone Ever Been To This Place?

Now, I have never been to Japan, nor do I plan on being able to afford the journey anytime soon. However, if I ever do manage to make it to the land of the rising sun-- the universal Mecca of weird crap-- I am definitely going to check this out:

Kashiwa Mystery Cafe

I know a few of you live in Japan, or have been stationed in Japan, have taught English in Japan, or have enough disposable income to take a vacation in Japan. Have you ever been to this place? How long has it been around? Is it as cool an idea as it seems like it is?

This cafe is on my list of places to visit, right alongside the seedy porn stores and beer vending machines that I have been told proliferate along the streets of Tokyo and other major Japanese cities. I never figured myself to be much of a weeaboo, but concepts like this cafe may well point me in that direction.
Sena
That sounds like an awesome idea.
Soludra
That's actually pretty neat. laugh.gif Nice find!
Kresslack
Just hope you don't get someone with really bad taste that just ordered before you. Not that I know Japanese anyway, so anything edible and I would be content. biggrin.gif

I'm pretty adventurous when it comes to food, so I don't think I'd have a difficult time. I love Japanese food, even the stuff that comes off as rather peculiar to Western palates. Just recently, I managed to disgust my co-workers by devouring baby octopus salad when we went out for sushi. The pansies wouldn't even try it!

I love Sushi. I had a friend that went to Japan not to long ago and brought me back a bottle of liquor with a snake in it. Supposedly, the venom from the snake fuses with the alcohol and neutralizes it, and gives the liquor a unqiue flavour. I haven't tried it yet, it's sealed and everything, so I might just not open and use it as a discussion starter, but then again, I might get really curious one night and open it, though I don't think to many of my friends would be willing to try it.
Ewell
Eww.... sushi. (and yes, I have tried it)
Dinkybarrel
I've heard of this place before, it's definitely on my to visit list too.
Sena
Apparently it was just a temporary performance art-ish thing, it's not still around.
Drauka
That seems interesting. Too many places I want to travel.

PS: I love sushi, mostly fatty tuna and eel. I don't like octopus as it doesn't have much flavor and is kinda chewy, but I do like it and squid flash fried! I don't eat sushi much as I love it so much, so difficult to be frugal... end up spending ~$80+.

Most grocery stores you go to have the trays full of sushi you can get for about $5, and the rice bowls.
Sena
And they're almost always poor quality. At least from every store I've tried.
Kresslack
I used to get them from Publix all the time, weren't bad IMO.

You won't miss what you've never had.
Drauka
I prefer the kind made by professionals. I can make the amateur kind at home myself.

edit: and grocery stores generally don't have access to sushi grade tuna.
Amunet
That really, really sucks. They need to open the place up again!

To add to the supermarket sushi debate, we have an organic foods market here that sells some pretty kick-ass sushi platters. Generally, I won't buy anything more than California rolls from a grocery store for fear of quality and age, but I'm glad I tried the ones I found.

Tako, ika, unagi, anago, and salmon are the best sushi toppings in the world. Protesters will be violently silenced.

Sushi is a plague.

STFU, n00b.

I'd hop a plane and beat you, but something tells me that living in Minnesota is a terrible enough punishment. If I lived in a frozen wasteland where everyone spoke like the mother from "Bobby's World", I'd lash out, too.

I do not live in a frozen wasteland.

The weather here is quite wonderful so long as it isn't between June and September.

Wtf is bobby's world.

Were you so deprived as a child that you don't know what Bobby's World is?? Granted, I haven't seen it since I was like two or three, but I still remember watching it....vaguely.

Sounds like he should be happy he hasn't seen Bobby's World.

MINNESOTA IS NOT A -ING FROZEN WASTELAND
Sena
I agree, Minnesota is nice. Infinitely better than living in Florida a swamp.
Fauscht
Ok so this place is entirely interesting, but with my luck I would get one of my numerous food allergies as my meal...however I would risk it just because the whole concept behind this place is awesome.

I live in Granola-ville portland though so I assume if they did this with an organic vegan twist all the hippies in my hood would love it.

omg I lol'd

(It would be so cool if you lived somewhere that wasn't Minnesota, cause I'd think about visiting. We can read books together and then analyze them.)

You know what's worse than Minnesotan accents? Wisconsin Accents.

They're rip-off Minnesotans. RIP-OFF! ... I think. Or is it the other way around?

I personally don't have that kind of accent.

EDIT: *Rerail* Sounds like a good place to go. I should go now. Maybe buy a flat there for -s and giggles.

Yes, I can do it.
Otha
Minnesotans don't have accents. Please stop confusing us with people from North Dakota.

Thank You.
