Sometimes because of lag or a connection that goes down I'll come back and either be dead or have starbursted. Knowing what killed me during that network event would be great.

It would be nice if the system could send a msg to you stating:

At x time you died due to y.

Not that I think this is a horrid idea, because I don't, but it does seem a little unnecessary. When I die, I tend to get at least one tell asking me if I'm okay. I am assuming that your character has friends who care. Usually a simple TELL <personwholikesme> Hey, what killed me? will get me the answer I'm looking for. smile.gif

There's no way for the system to know you're disconnected though. Which means you'd have to get a message every time you died. Besides, you can always ask citymates/housemates, and if you're rogue, tough luck.

I've always found that to be somewhat amusing... "Hey, I noticed you were just rended limb from limb and was brutally killed by some weird thing... Are you okay?" biggrin.gif

Xandeus spends 23 and 1/2 hours a day bashing in the Underworld. What makes you think he has friends who care if he loses another .001% of his 47482746148471847149148 experience?

We now get messages making sure we know we had credits transferred to us or that items decayed while we were away. It seems completely reasonable that we could get a message when we die, especially since a network disconnect would obscure this information from us.

The fact that this information is available from friends doesn't present a good reason why this shouldn't be implemented. That people transferred credits to you and that items decayed while you were gone both can be discovered by alternate means as well. The commonality between all these things is that they are helpful to have in a message because there is a high likelihood that you may have missed it for some reason.

Your comparison is invalid. Not everyone can see the two you mentioned. Anyone with deathsight can see your death.

You do actually get msgs from credit transfers while logged in. This is an anti-scam measure.

EDIT: The only time the OP would have even a shred of a possibility of being considered potentially having the ability to be useful would be for deaths to other players, because of the whole cause thing. Even then, it's not really needed or all that helpful, and would just add to the messages that already clog the servers. Oh so they claim. ..)

You get credit transfer messages no matter what. I'm assuming it is to help recognize credit scammers using illusions that much easier.

You get decay messages if you're in realms, and a message if you're away.

Things already happen as you die like updating stat stats, experience, and whatnot. Why is it so scary to add "If config messagemydeath = "yes" ; message adventurer, You have died at x time to y.

I'm for it. Nearly every time I died at my old apartment it was to a disconnect. Would have been nice to know to what.

I'd argue that importance is relative. I rather think that decay messages are next to worthless, but perhaps they are very useful to others. By the same token, I'd consider it very beneficial if, upon coming back from a temporary network disconnect, I could check my message to see if and how I died while I was disconnected.

And if you get dc'd while fighting or bashing, it doesn't take a very large intuitive leap to figure out what killed you. Especially when another 200+ people saw it.

Perhaps a config death_message off could be added for those that are ultra message sensitive (as mentioned before).

Also, I never said that there was no other way of obtaining this information. You can, as you mentioned, ask others to tell you. The argument was that it would be nice feature to supply this information given it directly affects the individual, and they might not have seen it due to a temporary internet disruption. Also, given that you connection may go out for a long time, it may be difficult finding someone who remembers what killed you at that exact point in time. It could also help obviate the need to issue yourself to find out what killed you in certain corner situations.

I can argue that decay messages are unnecessary in the same way, since I should know what I have and I can easily scan my inventory when I get back to see what decayed while I was gone. The fact that we get decay messages sets precedent that game can supply us information (as a nice to have feature) that we could have otherwise gained by other more time intensive means.

Yes, but the server doesn't know you're away. The server doesn't have a clue if the cable is unplugged or a main switch at your ISP burst into flame; that's why timeouts are so important.

Lana, I can't tell whether you are trolling or seriously can't understand the concept.

Take an example where you have a timeout set for 2 minutes (the shortest possible timeout) and your internet goes out. You come back some time later after the internet issue is resolved and see that you are a soul (ie you died in the 2 minute interval between when you were disconnected and when you logged out by timeout). Right now you'd need to ask around and hope someone saw it and remembered what happened so they could tell you about it. The purpose of this idea is that you should be able to configure an option so that when you get back and see that you are a soul, you can look at your messages to see what caused your death.

Now that I'm thinking about this a bit more, perhaps a death-log with a depth of about 5 would be more functional. This could be similar to organizational logs in that it only contains a certain amount of history, perhaps somewhere around the last 5 deaths or so. That way you could easily review your past deaths, but without the messages.

Perhaps something like this:

deathlog

At a time you died to f. (this being the oldest)
At b time you died to g.
At c time you died to h.
At d time you died to i.
At e time you died to j. (this being the most recent)

Plus, 1 message everytime someone dies isn't that many. I'm not spammed with 238423894756239874562394875623498562349856 deathsights per hour that I'm logged in like some of you are insinuating. For most people it wouldn't even be that often. Even Amunet can just do RM;DM after she dies, so it shouldn't clog up the servers.


Neither Xandeus' message idea, nor the deathlog idea are bad. You're all just reaching for reasons to call it dumb/bad/useless.

Edit: It wouldn't be any worse (message-wise) than people who have whole conversations via messaging instead of tells, and then not deleting the messages.

Imperian has a death log, a very public one actually that you can see onsite. Then again, you can also honours people on the Imperian website as well. But I don't really think it's that necessary, frankly the last thing I want is to be reminded of what I die to.

Well, in that case, we've basically said the exact same thing. Odd that he kept arguing his point in that case. Still, not too fond of the message being sent everytime you die, mostly because I can't see the purpose of it. If you don't know what you died to, ask around. If you don't have anyone to ask, well, tough luck. Being rogue has its drawbacks.

Funny side note: Today, Bleak was cocking off on Warriors about how I can't fight him solo (lol). So I went to NoT, aeonlocked, enlightened and beheaded him.
