A Jester
Sep 14 2009, 10:54 PM
Hello, folks.
I'm a new Jester, and, of course, I have a good amount of aspirations and ideas regarding combat—but since I'm so new, I've no clue as to whether or not my ideas are viable (practical, or otherwise). Can any experienced Jester give me some feedback? (Or someone who's knowledgeable of combat w/ Jesters, anyhow.) I plan to bash until I'm a relatively high level, then get into PK, but that doesn't mean I can't start learning theory early. Unfortunately, I don't have money to spend on credits.
-----
Is using 'hocuspocus' in combat a viable option? I'm sure it'd be rather difficult to set up, but it seems that with the right preparation, one can use it to confuse their opponent. Say, send illusions of multiple people attacking him / her -- while you throw, or handspring in, or something of the like.
What are the main "abilities" Jesters use in combat? (I'm not much interested in puppetry's obliterate, to tell you the truth, I'd much rather use Puppetry for IC reasons.) In every MUD, classes always have some relatively useless abilities. I've read, so far, Hangedman Tarot, Jack-In-The-Box, and Juggle, but I'm sure that's a very scant list. I also read of a Jester (I believe his name was "Zook") who was skilled enough in 'Weaponry' to juggle venom-coated axes (although he had something around 1,400 credits). Perhaps a better question is what abilities aren't used in Jester combat, as I'm sure there are different styles.
Is Thievery a sound option, being a Jester? Use of illusions, the heirophant tarot, ring of pestilence, and things like that?
What is the best race to be, combat-wise, as a Jester—not including Horkval for puppetry-tanking?
Any other, additional input would be appreciated. Sorry to burden anyone with what may be silly questions, but there aren't many starting-guides and things like that online.

Obliterate no longer exists. There's almost no chance of being a successful thief as a jester, and you can't use afflictions while stealing unless you already have cause on that person. Someone else will have to answer the combat-related stuff.

It's still easy to have the system ignore a line when it knows when and what the line will be.

Splendid, I was hoping for a response from Bonko. Thank you.
I still have yet to figure out how many credits it takes to become transcendent in a skill, but if being transcendent in the three class skills is a minimum for survival, I'm afraid I don't know how well I'll do in the future. I wasn't sure if I'd be able to transcend in one skill.
Darroth

It's about 293 credits or in that area to trans a skill from scratch.

With the credit bonus you get from binding credits, the number is knocked down to just a hair over 200cr, which is a pretty good reduction.

You need around $300 if you want to start pking right away
Sena
Sep 15 2009, 08:40 PM
$300 and level 70 would be enough to trans 4 skills and have over 400 credits left over for gold, cheap artefacts, or a 5th trans skill. Or it would be just enough to trans 5 skills at level 6. During a 20% credit sale you'd have an extra 200 credits, or during a mayan crown sale you'd have 10 mayan crowns that you could sell for 200-250 credits, or more if you're lucky. You can do just fine in mid-tier combat with much less than that.
It's not too hard to tri-trans without spending any real money if you know what you're doing, especially if you have access to house/city credit sales.

I just have one thing to add.
Be prepared to be frustrated after being beaten down time and time (x61) again until you finally figure out how to stop someone.
Oh, and one more thing.
Don't ever get all raged up over textdeath, it won't help you.

Awesome. Thanks for all your input, guys. You've made me feel much better about not having to spend any actual cash.
Believe me, though. I don't rage over much, much less video-games. I've played MUDs for years, and years, both very PvP intensive ones and RP intensive ones.
On another note, though, one question has yet to be answered:
Which is the best race to play as a Jester?

I was a rajamala jester. It was pretty lolzy and easy.
I would go Satyr if I was jester again.

Mhun, Rajamala, Horkval are good choices
but pesonally I'd say mhun
for:

When I was learning combat as a jester I was a satyr. There is no better feeling than locking someone down and headstomping them out.

As Jester I like to start off with maxing out bad mojo and cursed ground.
For items, you want to get a bottle if you're going mid, or maybe marchers and 3-4 mana potions if you're taking a side.
For mid game killing, try to start off with cursed ground, then follow up with your stun, then bad mojo. And if they're trying to fight back, use your ult.

Heroes of Newerth. What Dota has always aspired to be. Basically some of the dota creators went off and made the exact same game on its own platform. Google it, open beta's starting soon.

Yeah, I think it was some of more the recent mappers/coders of Dota who went with HoN. LoL was pretty cool, but feels different from Dota. HoN is a near exact replica (aside from different item and hero names) with better and smoother graphics.
