I promise, this is as annoying for me as it is for you. I had to drop the achaea.fadedparadox.com subdomain, because my old host didn't support rails (well, they did... in the technical sense of the word. it wasn't feasible at -all-) so I had to find one that did since I'm working on a few rails projects. This new site doesn't allow subdomains on their shared hosting, which is what I'm using now. The old google sites link works, and fadedparadox.com/achaea now redirects to there. Since all hosting allows subdirectories, this -will- not change. I may create a subdomain later, exactly how it was, it will just point to that, so both will work. I'm very sorry for all this. Me and Soludra tried left and right to get a subdomain to work, and I tried talking to their support but the shared hosting just doesn't have it.

short version: use fadedparadox.com/achaea instead of achaea.fadedparadox.com

On the bright side, I have enough of my projects done that I'm working on my scripts again. I'll post the updates shortly.

I'm working on a new site (read: one of my own design) for my plugins/tutorials. If you use my site, could I get some feedback on how this displays on your browser? I've tested it myself as best I can at the moment, and I already know any version of IE before 8 doesn't like the main menu, but at least IE7 displays it tolerably. (IE dislikes proper html/css:()

Same with firefox...not sure if that's intentional or not. Maybe just don't have that much done yet?
Soludra
Almost definitely just not done yet.

EDIT: and yeah, it looks good Trevize. smile.gif

Oops. Sorry I wasn't specific enough, I wrote that when I was way too tired. That's just one page, there's no content or other pages whatsoever yet. Plus it's a html page, I plan on making my site php so plugins are easier to add/remove/update. I'm just worried about making sure it displays fine before I move on to filling it in.

Soludra above is just pretending innocence and non-involvement, we've really been talking back and forth about websites all day. Guilty, I say! Guilty!

Fixed the IE7 problem, though IE6 and earlier still have a space below the tabs. Since no one said they had a problem with viewing the design, all the pages are up. Still at http://fadedparadox.com/achaeabeta. Most of the content isn't there yet, though. Last call for any problems in the design (aside from the tabs' bottom spacing on IE6 and earlier).

It looks very basic, like something you'd see years ago with nested tables (even if it is using CSS), shadowed poor font on an almost no contrast background image, and the width is very small. Your site has that prototypical "programmer" look, honestly. It looks like something from the late 90's and no client would ever accept a site that looks like that, we'd be out of work. I'd like to be nice and say it looks great, yet I can't, someone has to say it. Sorry sad.gif

Though people are going there to get your stuff so as long as that's easy to get to, then that's great.

I'd suggest installing some CMS software and modifying themes. It would be easier for everyone smile.gif
There are many good themes out there for CMS software systems, made by people that are good at designing with validated xhtml and css (many that do it for a living).

If not, please review general design theory and successful sites on the web that you admire. I suggest getting and studying these books (to start with):
- Non-Designer's Design Book, The (3rd Edition) by Robin Williams
- The Non-Designer's Web Book, 3rd Edition by Robin Williams and John Tollett
- The Non-Designer's Design and Type Books, Deluxe Edition
- Don't Make Me Think: A Common Sense Approach to Web Usability, 2nd Edition by Steve Krug

I like the simplicity. It seems fine to me.

I'm already aware of everything you said, I can critique my own work just fine. wink.gif I'm not too worried about how it looks, that's why I didn't ask for feedback on that. I just asked what I did because I wanted to make sure everyone could use it. But since I'm bored...

It is basic, I didn't put much time into it at all. I will say that I do hate nested tables for layout, but not for the look, just because it's using the wrong tool for the job.

I'd have done it wider, but a -lot- of people who went to my old one had 800x600. And yes, I know I could have done a variable-width design. wink.gif

Mhm. I'm better at programming than web design, though both are hobbies. I'm much more logical than artistic.

I'm not a web designer by profession. It's just a hobby I like playing around with. I haven't done it at all in years, and I'm just starting to get back into it.

While an amazing-looking site would be nice, I didn't make the design to sell anything or attract attention at all. The purpose of my site is just to help out other Achaeans. I made this design to host it myself. I hate using pre-made templates I can barely modify, if at all, regardless of whether they look better or worse.

I know what CMS is, have used it before, and I already plan on using it. Though not for this site... I have another one in mind (yes, for Achaea). ph34r.gif

I'm not offended. I, simply enough, wasn't looking for any feedback on how good or bad it looks.

I miss when the forums always merged posts. sad.gif Made it so much easier to reply to long posts.
