Full Version: Bug Sigil

This is something I think could be quite fun. It could also add to the espionage factor. Plus it would be cool

What it does:
When you place this enchantment in a room and set it, its arcane workings will record all spoken conversation within the room. To avoid detection when it is placed and set it becomes invisible. To retrieve what is on the bug you first have to collect it from where it was placed, must have it in your inventory and do LISTEN BUG which will essentially playback what has been recorded. Once done, it is destroyed. However, there are ways to protect against it. Just like with phase, throwing an eye sigil in a room will reveal it, but it will also destroy it.

Enchantment Name:
Bug Sigil

Syntax:
BEGIN CREATION OF BUG SIGIL

To Use:
DROP BUG in the room you want to use it in
SET BUG to activate it, at which it will become invisible
Picking it up would be done as normal, G BUG etc
LISTEN BUG to hear what it has recorded, once done it will selfdestruct

Type:
Created Item

Actions:
10, chant “ikantu hiran et akas rit yuva olis unan", 2X15

Comms:
2 silver, 4 stag’s horn, 2 gold

Enchantment Description:
This non-descript bug shaped sigil, when set, will record all spoken conversation within the room it is placed in.

Physical Description:
Painstaking detail has gone into making this sigil look like any old bug and able to withstand all but the closest of scrutiny, but it is anything but normal. The legs of the bug have an adhesive that will allow it to stick to almost any surface.

I picture this being a top level enchantment, probably somewhere after cube, and I would suggest a short decay time, something in the region of 5 ig months or maybe 10, but possibly no higher then that.

Thoughts?

Why would you ever need to throw an eye sigil? Why not just TAKE BUG if you think or just want to check if there is one in your room. Or is it made so only the person who activates it can pick it up?

It would be hidden. Can't be taken or seen or probed or ...

Sorry, to clarify, only the one who sets it can pick it up. After that, anyone who has it in their possession after it's been recorded can do LISTEN BUG

To me doesn't this take away more interaction. To do what you want to do now is possible. You need a serpent who's good, has eaves dropping and good at staying not seen. <This good, I have to interact with others and it creates intersting ploys, as now I have to really trust the serpent to handle the knowledge as well and I have to trust that he gave me accurate information>

I like the above situation because I have to interact with people in a multiplayer game

Here is how I picture your idea.

<enchant bug>

Drop bug at X

Go fishing

who (getting room name)
(still fishing)
go back to room at later date
Go fishing
#log (blah)
Listen bug
Go fishing

See not much interaction there, which is why I think a bug enchantment is a bad idea. Note Tattoos like Bell which are for the sole purpose of telling if people are listening? Would the bug be effected by the tattoo? I think it should as stated the sole purpose of their being that tattoos Is to tell when someone is listening. That being said, I still don't think its the best idea. That and in a round about way it takes away more serpent skills

Now maybe a bit much on fishing but the point there is to get information you don't have to interact with others to get it save buying an enchantment? That's a problem for me in a multiplayer game.

I think adding stuff like that would make people use tells even more than they do now, which would make spying harder. There's also language issue.
Mymyc
In Achaea everyone use tells or partytells. The idea is not bad though.
Balynne
These actually exist in a game called Avalon, which, I believe is what Achaea is based upon.

It's not a terrible idea, but it does sort of cheapen the espionage abilities available to serpents. I don't think it will add all that much here.
Eurulis
Intresting idea, but no matter how much trouble I have finding serpents to spy on people, I can't see myself really using this due to the fact that the locations they use to talk about this stuff is usually member-only. I can see a few uses for this, though.
Irion
This is an OK idea because the person has to both set the sigil and return before it decays and get it, not an easy task.

EDIT: therefore serpent will not be but out of business, especially if it has a short life, like 2-3 months
Trevize
Bad idea. This would give moderately decent spying abilities to everyone. Seriously, people, enough with wanting everyone to be able to do what a serpent does.

I thought the Pauldrons of Shrugging were a pretty good idea. smile.gif

who can blame us for all wanting to be like serpents?

I hope you get them and all they do is make you do the shrug emote every five sections. angry.gif

But in all seriousness, each class has purpose. Serpents are almost solely based around subterfuge and afflictions. To give such good subterfuge to everyone would ruin the class more than it is already, like the other arties did with us and travel.

I suspect these would end up more in random groves to record special "events" than anywhere else.

For less sticky conversations, most people probably already use party, tells, and clans. For example, raids, discussion of city matters, and such.

I can imagine some interesting situational uses for them, but there doesn't seem to be anything like them in the game, which means there'd probably be a lot of work involved in creating them. I'm not sure it's justified by the legitimate uses they'd offer.
