Full Version: Prankster Type Thief
Achaea's Forums > Everything Achaea > The Scarlattan Theatre

I've been thinking about bringing my serp out of dormancy to be a thief but not the type who just steals for gold or to be an ass to others. My character's personality is a playful type. So, I was thinking of playing a mischievous thief who just does it for laughs(for everyone, not just me) and to entertain(not CIJ entertain either tongue.gif).

I don't know if this has ever been done successfully or even been done at all.

No one finds theft funny.

Sad, but true.
Trendor
I wasn't planning on stealing gold or difficult to replace items. If I did, I would return it. I'm just looking to be a prankster type but using my thieving abilities to do it. I don't really know how to explain it any better. Maybe I will think of a better way later when my brain isn't half fried from studying.
Trendor
I don't want to do the kind of thievery that can be viewed as griefing someone. I just want to have fun with people, and they have fun too.
erisycthon
Like stealing their undies?

Or forcing them to throw stuff in their inventory to you which you throw back, and do a two-man juggling thing?
Taril
Could possibly Secret them things and then try to steal them back, claiming they stole them in the first place.

It's kind of hard to be a prankster and not annoying. Usually for the thief to be funny, the victim has to have a good sense of humour too.

And unfortunately, when it comes to Achaea, this is rare. sad.gif
Trendor
Yeah, I'll probably just scrap the idea. Meh.
Rynn
Secret them a container similar to their own and then try to steal it back. If it works, taunt them relentlessly. Hopefully they'll figure out you didn't actually steal their pack and they'll be all like "Oh you."
sryn
Lol just steal the weirdest pieces of garbage ever. Like the corpse of a gnoll or something, or a cloak that probably cost 500 gold. You are still stealing, and its still fun, but you aren't really causing damage.
erisycthon
On the down side, you are still gaining infamy at a breakneck pace. For a harmless prankster, that's a high price.
sryn
Yeah pretty much, and all thieves are open pk, so you might want to learn how to run.
Trendor
Well, I was thinking if he became famous enough, or at least well known, people prolly wouldn't hire on him, but I do know Marks and others who wouldn't give a - and just go for an easy kill.

People hire when you fail more than they hire for success. People hire for stealing -anything-. More than half the contracts taken on me were taken by people I didn't steal one thing from. Achaeans LOVE their cause.

I think more money has been lost hiring on me than I've actually managed to steal. laugh.gif

Ps. Infamy is really fun though. I like when I manage to be Infamous, which isn't all that often anymore because I'm too busy to steal these days. sad.gif

As I said previously, I'm prolly just gonna scrap the idea.

The issue isn't the people who hire. They have no sense of humor and are lame, but they can only do it so much.

The issue you'd really run up against are marks who would kill you repeatedly because you were infamous from your not-actually-theft.

I've not actually had any trouble with that.
erisycthon
You're the only thief I've ever heard report not having an issue with that.

Thieves used to constantly complain about marks whose orgs they hadn't even harmed attacking them just because they were infamous.

Depends on a number of things, really. How often you really steal, who you steal from, how many times you are out of your city, if they can catch you, etc. Other than that, it's also just the difference in game. Back in Santar's hayday, thieves were not given any reprieve. Nowadays, people don't care or don't want to bother with it. I don't know any thief that suffers from being attacked constantly, and I'm friends with many of them.

Oh, and it helps when Mhaldorian/Hashani thieves don't attack each other and you're friends with Ashtan.
Des
Being a Naga makes being a thief easier, I think. You aren't hunted by Mhaldor and Hashan (not that Hashan has many thief-hunters), you have thief mentors like Ulrike, a city that no one ever infiltrates to attack you, and many more resources, I bet. But that is an outsider's perspective. I haven't ever been a thief.
Trendor
Mhaldor just isn't for my character. He's too much of a free spirit and enjoys being cityless. However, he may consider becoming a formal ally with the city.

I use to steal underpants. It was fun. I got a laugh every now and then, mostly out of Hoka though, who just loved the thought of me stealing underpants ph34r.gif

But yeah, as has been said, a thief is a thief, is a thief. No matter what you're stealing, and whether you're doing it to get laughs out of people or not, you will not get laughs, you will get hunted, and griefed, and be hated.

good luck!

My character would hire on a failed attempt. If the thief asked why, he'd explain that failed theft is still theft in intent, and should still be discouraged.

I wasn't criticizing! Just giving the OP some of the reality of playing a thief character.

Tbh, I like when people take out contracts on me. For one, it keeps things interesting, and for two, it's just another reason to chat up a stranger. smile.gif
Borran
This has been tried, and it does not work well in Achaea.

You snap, people either run, and don't pay any attention to you, or attack you. There's no room for prank/trickster thievery in Achaea.

Tenebrus has shown us that there is more than just a quick snap and luck to theft.
Especially the RP side of things.

While I would sob uncontrollably if (and when) I am robbed, I do kind of understand this rush that must come with the act of thievery. It must be a heck of a thrill and worth getting marked. I have yet to have my possessions taken away from me and I am now so paranoid that I will probably never leave the city.

Sobbing over losing your e-panties is a bit much I think! laugh.gif

But honestly, if/when you are robbed, the best advice I can give anyone is to actually talk to the thief! I love IC chats. I give back stuff when asked. I don't get upset when people hire. Yes, I understand not -every- thief is like this, but really, what do you lose by trying?

Hee hee. I was just tacking the panties bit on the end. I meant if I was robbed of hours of gold from grinding catching those silly butterflies (being a newbie) and vials which are really expensive.

I just found the whole "stealing of e-panties" a bit funny, and very Tokyo-esque. laugh.gif

And what you say about talking to the thief sounds like a very good idea. I still agree, it does sound like an exciting profession to be in. I noticed there is another thread about stealing and how it should be eliminated, but I think it does balance up the game slightly and provide an element of fear for people in the their younger years. The only thing that I have trouble with is (since I am not a coder at ALL) is the automation of everything. I am totally swamped by it at the moment. But, I am sure in time I will get used to it....still a newbie after all.

But, I am not too sure how one can be a funny thief. But then, what do I know? blush.gif

To be honest, I have not yet attempted to make any reflexes, only read the help file on Nexus.

I am a Mac user, so I feel that using Nexus is probably the way forward. There are some good clients for Mac, but no-one else has a mac that I can find, so I am just going to start using Nexus I think. I am tempted to try out the Windows install on Boot Camp, so I can play Achaea. lol.

If you ask your house too, most of the older members should be able to explain what triggers you should make. Once you know what to make, it shouldn't be that hard to figure out how to go about making them.
