Full Version: What Do You Use To Draw?

I'm pretty sure this has probably been asked a time or two but I'm wondering what people use to draw/color their drawings. Do you draw it by hand on paper and scan it then digitally color it? Do you have a drawing tablet for your computer? Other options?

I tend to sketch in pencil but I don't have a good enough scanner to be able to transer it to my computer to color it. I'm tempted to buy an inexpensive Wacom tablet in order to explore my artistic visions. Any input on that?

Adjust the contrast to black-or-white and fiddle with the brightness if your scanner isn't picking it up well enough to colour. Inked line art helps.

Well I realize that, yeah. I think what I'm more asking is how people come up with the drawings they do. Like I used this media to produce this result, this is what you can make it look like. As a complete n00b as far as digital art goes, I have no idea what I'm looking at when I see a drawing in artisinals. Like was it drawn by hand and then scanned and colored digitally? Was it drawn and colored all by hand then scanned? Was it sketched using a tablet? I just want to see what methods yield what results.

Thos crayons don't look right ... I would highly suggest not eating them

To contribute constructively to this thread: Prismacolor are very good pencils if you like to hand color.

That was epic. I was staring at it for hours. And by hours, I mean 4 seconds.

I sketch with mechanical pencils, ink with a fine-tip pen, erase the pencils, scan it into Photoshop 7.0, and work it over in there.

I wish I had a tablet. Someone please donate a tablet. sad.gif

Hey Delph, is that a Kx'Khrah and a Nevaharr?

More people should do art of banished/extinct/unplayable races.

Pretty interesting to see.

Tried the digital and didn't like it so much. My tablet has less than 25 hours of use and I doubt I've touched it for the past year and a half if not longer.

I went back to the basics - a mechanical pencil and a cheap sketch pad. Lately I've been dabbling with watercolors and tinted charcoals, but have been tied up with "real life" commissions and not really able to dedicate time towards a decent artisanal. sad.gif

My favorite favorite thing to draw with is a mouse in ye old MSpaint. I prefer to pixelart then anything else.

Everything else is done either by hand, scanned in and lined messily in OC and colored messily in OC. Alas, I don't have photoshop so I settle for it's welfare kindred. Most of the time, I actually just sketch it out via tablet rather then deal with my -ty scanner. dry.gif

Charcoal. Dead serious.
