Topic pretty much explains it all... Submitted a piece of artwork for the Artisanal contest and didn't get it posted to the main Achaea page? Post it here, everyone can take a peek, offer tips and pointers, or lol as the case may be!

Jan. 09 Submission:

Failed attempt at a golem.

@latus: I know sad.gif

@Adalie: Was going to do a bee-hive, and had a piss poor golem in it, buuuut ran short on time.

noted!

Was a joke. Ya know, since every achaean artist seems to think that tattoos are instant achaean-specific. I'd be more impressed if you could make it distinctly achaean without putting tattoos -ing everywhere.

that said,

needs moar tattttttooooosz
rledaman
I placed in bardics without mentioning tattoos tongue.gif

Even though Rynn told me I needed more tattoos.

I've seen much less achaean specific things win, sometimes even first prize. Slap on a tattoo on some bad drawing and you have 50% of winning.

Artisanals are judged by dart throwing. Delete artisanal pls angry.gif

Edit: I like this one.

Why would we share our failures? To be laughed at? To be ridiculed? To be tormented?

Ok!

I'm not the best artist, by far, but I did have an urge to draw something, so I drew Sylvan entities, and I wasn't totally displeased with the result, so I submitted it.

I guess I should have worked on a more dynamic composition, with greater depth. It is a little dull with everything just lined up together.

The golem should have been bigger, and bulkier, which I did tinker with after I'd already submitted the original, but after changing him, the rest of the piece needed changing a bit and I haven't bothered re-doing it all.

Anyway, the subjects are pretty common, having been in other people's pieces before (especially forests in general,) so I guess it does get a little old. I have been working on another totally different piece that I think is shaping up pretty well, and it looks a lot more clean and detailed. I might submit it, if I ever finish it.

RE: The OP - yours looks nice, Pernicios. I guess it just falls under "not distinctly Achaean" enough. :/

Yours is quite distinctively Achaean and judging by the standards, in terms of both relevance and effort, of many other entries I think this should at least win a merit, further proving that artisanal is broken.

@Morwen: I totally agree, I like Gaeylia's pic more than a couple that placed :\

@Gaelyia: I noticed a few things I needed/wanted to change directly after I submitted.... namely the rigidness of her torso (needed better shading) the tops of her wings looking completely flat, and the left hand side of her hair being all fubar'd sad.gif

But honestly, I liked this one alot better than the Jack in the box one I placed with last month....

Edit: And of course, tattooz

Re: tattoos.

At some point in time I learned that the Artisanal competition isn't about producing the best art possible, or even the best Achaean composition possible. It's about figuring out what the judges want and giving it to them. Over and over. This means copious tattoos. Backpacks, swords, quarterstaves, crystals, humgiis, whatever it takes.

But the Bardics... heh... well, that's TOTALLY different. The Bardic judges are really really great. Damn, I love those guys. Top notch. smile.gif

Hi judges!

This one never placed. It was kind of a two-part dealie with the one that follows it. Denizens of Hriddan. Grut Vlugar won a prize, Kolyartus did not. Must be the lack of tattoos.

Morwen
Bardic winning entries seem quite good and reasonable. I wonder who are the judges for artisanals...

A thing called "the Ritual" I drew back in the day (and yes, I was playing an apostate alt at the time and was a big Herenicus fangirl tongue.gif ). Yeah, it doesn't have much of a background, but I ran out of both time and ideas.

I might post my attempt at drawing the 4 guises of Melantha later. It looks awfully like a kiddie watercolor thing though unsure.gif

Wow. This is just another reason (there are many many!) why I should leave drawing to the artists.

I always liked this one. And ever after, anytime I saw Herenicus I saw Al Pacino. biggrin.gif

I don't agree about the Catherine Zeta-Jones resemblance, though. She looks more like Heather Graham, if she had black hair and lipstick.

Metzger
Christopher Walken sprang to my head, actually.

Aerek
And Walken does carry that 'creepy' aura that I'd expect from a ranking Mhaldorian figurehead.
Alaiea
If you must know, the chick was drawn after a random model on a website where you can order goth clothing tongue.gif Any similarities to celebrities are coincidental.

Anyway, yeah, while I know my limits and concede many flaws with this picture and admit that there are people who do much, much better (e.g. Merik. Her stuff always amazed me mellow.gif ), the fact that this didn't place compared to some of the stuff that does is what inspired my "you guys are way biased against black and white" rant that ended up getting my name into the help file tongue.gif

I submitted a dorky self-portrait of my occie alt warping rats for the Feb contest based on her character and clothing description. I would like constructive criticism and so forth for why it isn't 'achaean' enough. The link is the same image, just larger. I didn't want to stretch out the page with the size of the scan.

:C Did the grandpa rat running away with the walker kill it? It's watercolor/oil pastel with ink outline, the scanner washed out a lot of the water color so.. GIMP for the color adjusting to match the original.
Hipsana
Ok.. disclaimer. I am teh suck at visual artsy things, so when you want to say Hips sucks! moar tatz!, I know. I made this nearly pixel by pixel (especially the damned trees!) using paint and nothing more. This is Hipsana's grove back when I still filled it with crap like wind chimes and birdhouses.

By wild blackberry bushes.
In the thick undergrowth and vegetation, a score of wild blackberry bushes have taken root. Lush and ripe blackberries hang delectably from the thorny branches, swaying gently in the slight breeze. Around the bushes, the tall and gnarled oaks stand guard, as if protecting the wilds from intrusion. Vibrant wildflowers lend their colour and scent to the area, creating a very pleasant atmosphere.

It's been confirmed that artisanals are judge using a complex formula involving a dice and the number of visible tattoos/runes, achaean-ness or artistic merit are irrelevant.

Quoting the overused and yet time-proven rule of artisanal: NEEDZ MOAR TATTOOZ
Rynn
Either a) needz moar tatttooz or 2) you have to use a really obscure reference from the mythos, like drawing the spot where Maya considered having her abortion (less tattoos are necessary in this instance).
HoboJuice
Does anyone know if any (repeated) resubmissions have any made it through? I would like to play my chances with getting a high school with the maybe dice.

Eyes are not uneven, it just appears that way due to the lack of any shadowing at all on one side of her face.
