When creating your character, did you think about the Achaen world and try to tie things into your persona/history? Or did you just add on as things came up? Was there any planing? I know everyone has Orders, and Houses, and Citys, and Clans, but I am curiouse as to how much thought people give it all...

I didn't plan anything (except for starting out as a serpent in the Naga and a slave of Mhaldor, it all just happened and the character got more and more complicated.

Adalie
Jan 28 2009, 03:59 PM
My boyfriend at the time was like, "Play this cool game. You'll want to be a good guy. Priests are cool. And if you're a Priest you should be in the Empyreal and Shallam."
So I went from there.
When I've made alts I've thought of things before I got to them, but not with Adalie since I'd never played before and didn't know what to expect.

Jan 28 2009, 04:36 PM
I had never played a MUD, much less Achaea, when I created Flair. I read a little on the site, Occultists sounded cool--started playing and new nothing about what I was doing. Luckily people were pretty patient and ready to help back then (most people probably still are) and the character just slowly developed over time.
Jonathin
Jan 28 2009, 04:40 PM
When I created Jonathin, I thought about it during creation, and planned it out there.
When i created my alt, which has recently become my main, who I play more and has more lessons into than Jonathin, I made him up as I went along.

My childhood buddy Bengala got me to check out the game (fist MUD I'd ever seen).
I researched the website for like half an hour deciding what would be best.
Chose the monks of Darkness in the city of Darkness.
Hermaldo
Jan 28 2009, 07:21 PM
Well sorta because what I did pretty much set my path for Hermie from then on.
Groton my bestfriend/nowroomie talked with my friend Griffinus who was my goodfriend/nownextdoorneighbor about the game every morning before school and I got interested. I wanted to be with one of them for help so I researched Shallam and Mhaldor their respective cities as well. In the end I chose Groton and I went with Mhaldor and my char pretty much follows Groton around.

Jhaeli
Jan 29 2009, 02:34 AM
I can't call Jhaeli an 'alt', since I'd stopped playing and my previous character had been dormant for some time. But she was a second character. So I had an idea of what I wanted when I created her - actually, wanted to stick with the Occultists and Ashtan. Funny how these things work out though.

When I started Achaea my friend told me about it and I never researched anything, but I did know I wanted to be in Hashan. I also knew from real life experience, Monks were crazy cool, so I went to the Kharon. To be honest, I never did stay IG that well, but I didn't blatantly do the opposite. The Kharon was a pretty sweet guild, by far my favorite. The Black Lotus however.... =/.
To Amunet and Taraus I think the stupidity was contagious. Everyone was wearing one of those lame titles. Mine was Oh Captain, My Captain.

In the beginning, I was 100%, so far IC I was afraid to go OOC because I thought I'd be shrubbed. Now there are times I say some stuff I shouldn't, but I've passed the point of caring for the most part.
When I joined Achaea, I was just doing it to make fun of somebody who quit playing years ago. I mean really, I'm not sure how my name got past the name police coming in. I was finally asked to change it when I was 80 years old, and I was like, um, I can't do that anymore.
I've TRIED to go several different RP routes, but bordum sets in and I change class or something. Wanted to go knight when somebody told me about the runewarden's guild, so I joined, got bored at GR3 after 80 years ig. Went Hashan to be neutral, joined Mhaldor because my character RPs a valid reason for disliking Shallam (ask IG if interested).
Pretty much though, right now it all depends on the mood I'm in, which I think is quite sad.

Zaoria is IC in says and other publicly viewable actions 100% of the time, except for the occasional mischan on to CT or CHT. I rarely go OOC for anything, and it usually pisses me off when people can't stay IC.
One of the few things I can at all pride myself on in the game anymore is that, while Zaoria is a slightly bitter extremist bitch/zealot, she's been one the whole time I've been playing.

I've often been told that Goryllin is too IG, too serious. Should loosen up, lighten up and actually just enjoy a game.
So I have started trying to be friends with people ooc. Poergh, Trey, Balynne, Amunet, Trance though he never talks to me. I am trying. Its just well, when logged into achaea most of my thinking is in Gory mode. I have recently really tried sending ooc messages to accompany my ic ones, or to send some self teasing ooc messages to people after fights.
Normally that works well and we have a laugh or exchange teases between people who play fighters. Things we find funny or would understand.
All except for Mali and Tali who cant seem to turn off the burning rage.
Maize
Jan 29 2009, 05:18 PM
Maize is almost 100% in character, with close friends I can sometimes break away shortly but the only time is when it comes to reflex discussions. I'm here to be a character in an on going story which is something I love. One thing I really hate is ending up in a clan where everyone is OOC and talks alot, I find it really distracting and ruining the illusion for me. I don't have a problem with such people I just don't like to accidently end up in such groups. For me its all about the story.

I was talking more about your talking than your fighting. My only fighting with you was completely ignoring you when fighting off 5 people after my dragonbuddies died in a mhaldorian raid. That I both got out and saved bodies when that outnumbered is still a highlight.
I use messages to say things that Gory wouldnt. They are my release valve so I can laugh at myself and circumstances without ruining my stick up the ass character.

Goryllin raids Mhaldor. Goryllin attacked Tali with Geraint. Goryllin is attacking Mhaldorian citizens. Goryllin is on Tali's perma-hatred list. Most likely because of the second action.
Quoren
Jan 29 2009, 10:06 PM
I never plotted out Quoren's path or personality; he started as an offshoot of my own personality. I started in the EA/Shallam because that's where my only earlier character, a miserable failure whom I abandoned minutes later, started, and it sounded fun. He's grown from there to have a basic personality path and even a few quirks. He's much more of a diplomat than I am, and while he isn't always moderate in his opinions, he's always moderate in his speech.
As for staying IG, I try to always do that, to the point of only having 1 OOC clan and tagging all OOC tells and messages with [ooc] at the beginning.
SlyViolin
Jan 31 2009, 03:21 PM
Tahquil started out with a very rough idea to what her personality. The girl that sat in the middle row of the classroom, next to the window. Not quite paying attention, never asking questions, but above average score when the test rolled around. I knew I didn't want her to settle straight away into a vague diplomat role so she dabbled with various things.
I always aim to make her the advisor who stands behind the judge, saying nothing and not really paying attention until she grows bored, says something to the judge and toddles off to do her own thing as the sentences are passed out.
Most OOC stuff happens in clans, and sometimes messages. Need to keep sane somehow.
Kaelyn
Jan 31 2009, 04:36 PM
I never really planned how Kaelyn was going to be, but she started out as an offshoot of my own personality. I chose the Mojushai and Cyrene because, whilst getting lost in Cyrene, some random people recruited me. She's now developed into something rather different, which is fun to play. She doesn't understand moderation, mostly due to my astounding ability to get bored quickly. She's also far more patient, which is tough to keep going when dealing with idiotic people who don't understand the word "no".
As for staying IG, I have two OOC clans which go to keep me sane. Close friends send me OOC tells and messages, also. If a random person sent me an OOC message, I wouldn't be too strict about it, but an OOC tell would likely get an annoying "I'm sorry, I don't understand what you are saying!" response.
