Well don't know where else to put this post, so it goes here!

A few days ago I was speaking to a mate who still plays Achaea, and the question arose of an online Achaean news archive. Now, some might remember that at one time there was such a site, created by a Tom Groves that allowed people to search the Achaean news. However after relentlessly searching for this site, I came upon its location, but alas there was no longer the searchable archive. In its place was the following message:
CODE
Dear Achaean visitor,

After I moved on from an enjoyable two years in Achaea, I no longer updated the
'News Archive' that you may have come here to see.

In the same way, I have now moved to a different platform for this website and
no longer maintain the searchable Archive, but I have saved the contents in the
zip file with this readme which you can download and search a local copy of.

I did let Matt of IRE know that this tool had some minor popularity... maybe
IRE will create something "official-like" to serve the same function.

So, being bored with naught to do, I set out to recreate this database. I present to you now, the new Achaean News Archive. As of this writing, the database of news boards include Announce, and Events, up to date as of 8 hours ago. I will be adding the Public news board in small chunks (c'mon 17,989 post is a LOT of material!) at a time, but for now enjoy the records! Within the month, you can expect the database to be automatically updated once a day. So for those of you dying to read the latest public/announce news, but not able to login to Achaea, you'll still be able to get your fix.

If you have any issues with the system, you receive an error, or have suggestions for the archive please PM me here, or email at: <My main character> @ <myforumname>coder.com.

Thanks.

-Edit-

If you search for a WAY too common word, or character (Such as using Sarapis as the 'From' query while searching Announce) you won't return any results, as it'll be WAY too many to display. Try narrowing the search down a bit more.
Daes
Very nice. Thank you for this, Rakon.
Lucano
Nice work, congrats!
Tiax
It'd be great if you also provided a downloadable text file.
Nitro
Woah, this is just godly!
Penquin
You're welcome mates. I hope it'll be useful enough to some people, and I did learn a lot creating it.

I could that, give me some time however. Although, the file will be huge, as of right now a flat file would be about 12MB. I'll work on it though, just for you Tiax!
Rynn
OP is a huge nerf to Pauldrons of Shrugging. sad.gif

I just wanna be able to run regex scripts on it. That would be all manner of hot.

If I incorporated regex searching into the Message field, would that work?? Or you'd still want the downloadable?

Hi Rakon!

Pauldrons of shrugging is something SOME asshole made up and tricked me with! >:/
Gorlasintan
Actually, they're going live on Mayaween.
Penquin
A word of note:

Each field in the form searches that particular field in the news post. So, for example, searching for 'Rakon' in the 'To' field of the Announce board, won't return any results. However if I put 'Rakon' in the 'Message' field (without the ''s and NO newline), I get two results! WOOT! I made it into two announce post.

Have fun!
Drauka
A SQLite database file would be awesome instead of a text file. I never thought of doing this, yet could do it also if need be.
Tenebrus
You're a hero. And a legend.

UPDATE: Achaean News Archive

Regular expression searching should be fully operational now! You should be able to search the From, To, Subject, and Message fields using regular expressions. However, if the request is extremely complex, or your syntax is not correct, there won't be any results returned.

Example search:
CODE
Board:Announce
From: Maya|Sarapis
Subject:credit sale

The above would search for posts on the announce news board, that have Maya OR Sarapis as the FROM, with the subject including the phrase credit sale.
Feel free to play around with the archive, and if you find any errors, or a result is returning something you feel is wrong, PM me or Email me.
Soludra
Two suggestions. One, make the search results boxes a lighter color than the background. Two, highlight each occurrence of the search phrase.

Other than that, this is totally awesome. ohmy.gif

They don't seem to.

This would be cool too, but I could just as well construct a database file from a text file.

They don't seem to.

Perl REGEX and wildcards should work fine.

Search terms: 31 results
CODE
Subject:^Credits.*$

But yeah.....seems the ? operator is throwing errors.. HMm... I'll look into it.
Hermaldo
Random button?
erisycthon
Wow, I never realized I'd made it into an Events post.

I remember that event, too.

I miss Aista and Lythea. sad.gif

Random button?

That, I can do biggrin.gif.

Also, to those who care to know. Public news board is about a good 85ish MB of text.
Uploading it a bit at a time now!
Penquin
Okay, the random post bit has been put in. Just scroll down to the bottom of the page. To get a new post, just refresh the page.
Sena
This seems great so far.
erisycthon
Kudos for you effort, man, this is awesome.
Sena
Hmm, in the index, the news link is broken. It's http://penguincoder.com/news.html, it should be http://penguincoder.com/news.php.

Thanks! Fixed now.
Ravien
Loved it when you showed me the demo, love it even more now. Ive already used it alot heh just public to go! People should stop posting inane crap though, takes up space!!
koutsou
I want just to say thanks. This project is great!
berenene
This is so great!
krans
Could you please add the option to display the body of each news post in a fixed-width font? Some of the posts have ascii art which is impossible to see as-is.

Alternatively, if it's already supposed to display as fixed-width but I don't have the right font, please add "monospace" to the appropriate CSS font-family!
Penquin
Hmm...it's supposed to be in Lucida console, AND in html PRE tags just in case. I have CSS whitespace:pre; 'ed too tongue.gif
I'll change the default font to a monospaced.
Darroth
I miss rageRakon sad.gif. Great job with this though, thanks.
Penquin
Check now, messages should be monospaced

@Darroth: SHHHH! No one misses rage Rakon. Lithum pills say so. And thanks smile.gif
Penquin
There are now 15,610 total unique post in the database, with 12,438 of those post belonging to public, 2,882 in announce, and 290 in events. I will be adding the other ...ohh 3 thousand or so post tomorrow.

Enjoy, and thanks for all the great feedback so far!
vadimuses
I'd like a simple search line in addition to the complex one.

Could you elaborate? You'd like to see a single simple search box that would search ....?? All fields, certain fields, or just the message itself?
vadimuses
All fields
Landon
This news archive thing is classic. Naturally I had to search for instances of my name in events posts, and was reminded how Kandor got no respect from the Divine. Witness Events post 123:

"...Animals howled and shrieked as these three Sentinels battled until only
Landon and Kandor remained. The epic battle raged, as the two fought,
keeping in mind the great prize that waited for the victor at the end.
In what some call a surprising upset, Kandor stepped from the portal
victorious and claimed the title of victor in the World Free-for-all."

Hilarious.
Aliath
I am loving this already, was fun to read through some old posts I made, without having to go through all of them first, albeit ironically I am in the process of reading through all the public posts, quite a lot of fun ones early on.
Penquin
Alright! Automatic updating should be in for the archive. If you notice by chance that any post are missing, or not edited/fully present, please use the link and email me everything you can about the issue.

Vadi, I'll work on that simple search for you a bit later biggrin.gif. Going to try and get some search term highlighting in at the same time, so be patient!
Soludra
I wish we could have organization news too, but that's probably asking for far too much (especially in terms of sekrit stuff). sad.gif
Rolo
That was the worst -ing movie ending I've ever seen in my entire -ing life.

- you Wachowski Brothers

- you Warner Brothers

- you Keanu Reaves

- you The Matrix Revolutions

Okay I'm out...

I'm going to sleep
