1. What is Topmudsites? It is a website whose primary purpose is a form of "traffic exchange" promotional site. Basically, MUDs send traffic (internet users) to it by having users 'vote' for a MUD, and it sends traffic back to the MUD. The more traffic/votes a MUD sends to it, the more it generally gets back. It's free promotion and a way for you to help the world of Achaea with very little effort.
2. How can I vote for Achaea?Easy! Just go to www.achaea.com and click on the Vote image on the top right. Then click on the box that says "Vote for this site and enter." That's it! You can only have your vote counted every 12 hours.
3. I can never remember to vote!Don't feel bad - it's a common issue! To help you, we've implemented two distinct ways to remind you:
- Type config voting prompt or just config voting on. This will keep track of when you last voted as long as you're logged into Achaea when you vote, and remind you to vote 13 hours after you last voted. If you used 'config voting prompt' then the word 'vote' will appear on your prompt as a reminder and you will be sent another reminder every half an hour until you vote. If you used 'config voting on' then you will only be sent the half-hourly reminder. If your vote doesn't register for whatever reason, just type 'voted' to register that you voted.
- A reminder is sent to everyone online about twice a day.
HELP DYAD in Achaea will give you more information. Remember: You certainly don't have to vote, but it does help Achaea in the long-run and we'd appreciate it. Thanks![

As I know people will ask, here are a few details:
1. The TMS software only accepts one vote per subnet per 12 hours. This means that generally, disconnecting and reconnecting to your ISP to obtain a new IP isn't going to register extra votes.
2. "Why didn't my vote show up?" The TMS listing is only updated every 15 minutes or so, so unless you happen to vote right before the update, you won't be able to immediately see the vote total go up.

I just want to emphasize that CONFIG VOTING ON and CONFIG VOTING PROMPT are new options. The Prompt, in particular, seems to be a popular way to remind yourself to vote.

Can you fix it so that it registers votes made from Firefox? Otherwise for us firefox users there's no point having the vote reminder prompt.

Matt, I love that new vote reminder on the prompt.
It stands out to me way more than any "Reminder" or fireworks with "VOTE!" written on them.
I vote as soon as it pops up. It's no hassle at all.
Edit: It doesn't register users from FF? I have been on FF for a year now and it takes my votes..

I think a lot of people do what I do... they vote, and then if there's anything in the newest threads in the left corner of the page about "IRE", "Achaea", or anything posted by The_logos, we read it. I can't believe how dumb people there can be. People who claim they run their own games. I'd hate to be playing in the game of someone who has no grasp of reality and posts solely to try to somehow harm another person's image... even if they have to make things up and say things they probably don't even believe.
At the least, seeing, say, Kavir posting, makes me want to vote, so.. hey.. good job.

The problem with Kavir is that he knows just enough to know SOMETHING, but doesn't know enough to really have any grasp of what it means to run a good MUD generally. This shows in the fact that his MUD has about 8 players total.

Here's a trigger for those of us who use mushclient. The first prompt you receive with Vote in it will trigger it, and send out a nice, outstanding cyan/orange link to the voting site.

Inferior products aside, about this topmudsites lark. Does being first place really make a massive difference (in comparison to second which is our general spot...though saying that it's less and less so these days

) in new players/potential credit buyers and so forth?
Look at it this way, I come across the Topmudsites.com website (this isn't the way I found Achaea, you have nuklearpower adverts to thank for the horrors of Finchy) I can almost assure you that I'll have almost no interest in the first place game. Because the first thing you think is "over populated" "full of ijiots" so you look a little further down. There is also the fact that Aardwolf is a blasted annoyingly long process to actually log on, which quickly bores and reminds the potential player that he has other things to get addicted to..but i'm flying off the point here.
Back to the question, do IRE notice a big upsurge if they hold the #1 spot? (Yes, I realise by holding the #1 spot we already HAVE an upsurge, but i'm refering to after we get that spot)

Over time, yes. There's a small version of "winner take all" going on on TMS. Usually, if one game is in 1st the whole voting period and another game is in 2nd the whole voting period, the game in 1st will get about 80% more traffic (that's based purely on ad hoc observation rather than real analysis) from TMS than the game in 2nd.

To be honest one of the things that makes us voters pause before voting is player quality. It's a bit selfish on our part, but I admit before I vote I always worry about these 1337 trolling newbs coming along and recking the game.

Well, there are over 1300 players from Topmudsites in Achaea's database, including many elder players. The newbies from TMS ARE you guys. They just know less about Achaea, at this point.
